Lets talk about forced quests

Post » Mon Jan 18, 2016 4:39 am

I do wish they would have a selection on the active quest log to ignore quest and have it moved to another screen called ignored quests just for maintenance purposes/forgetting I didn't want to do that quest for that individual.

I hate Preston and the Minutemen quests but the problem is that they are my favorite faction being they are closest to my ideology (classical liberalism).

"This settlement needs your help with a ghoul!"

*Does the quest and turns it in*

"The same settlement needs help with a ghoul!"

Repeat over and over again.

There really needs to be an option to tell him "No" or the ability to send a group of minutemen to take care of it.

If you wait for the end of that line, and then turn and run like hell, you should get far enough away for him to stop talking which interupts the giving of the next quest, but gets far enough into it that it completes the one you're turning in.

True enough, and I'll bet the modding community will remedy this, but I want a better sorting of my misc first. I can't imagine how the menu system wasn't refined before launch.

It even became a meme...

Preston is officially Fallout 4's biggest meme, just like arrow in the knee was Skyrim's biggest meme.

Though, at least Preston one can be funny at times.

Yeh....I don't understand this whole 'forced' thing.

Sure, it's in your Pip Boy...but your not forced to do it. You're not really forced to do anything in this game besides exit Vault 111.

But I guess some people just need to be victims of something.

Forced quests in bethesda games? serious? they are well known in gaming circles for 'free form' game play. That's what makes them unique.

I suppose you really don't have to leave the vault either, but that would certainly be one REALLY boring game.

I wonder if all generals feel forced to take care of obligations that come with a title they accepted of their own volition.

Uh, none of the options fit what i would answer. The quest you get while walking past guards etc is mostly well done. It is just rumors that can turn into quest, so i enjoy that. But Radiant quests should have the option to say yes/no.

This is kinda true when you think about it, they just clog up your quest log but you can easily ignore them even if it gets a bit annoying. A forced quest would have you unable to do anything else or leaving a certain zone until you complete it.

I'm fine with getting a side quest when walking past someone (like when someone at Diamond City tells me about the Combat Zone), but I don't want to get radiant quests unless I ask for them and that shouldn't be hard to ask for...Haylen and Rhys at the Cambridge Police Station won't give you a quest if you tell them you don't want one for awhile, but Preston? You can't walk by him without getting a radiant quest and how many can he give at a time? 3? Just annoying.

But you kinda have to accept the role in order to get those quests, no?

"You know how you asked me if I wanted to be responsible for the minutemen, and therefore the settlements that they protect? Ya, I just can't be arsed about it."

And people say the Fallout 4 doesn't have any choice and consequence.....

Like others have said, I don't mind overhearing someone talking and having my maps updated or even having a Misc Objective show up in my quest log. I do with the new location would flicker a few times the next time I open the map so I have an indication where it is. Like others have said, I find having radiant quests auto-logged is annoying. I wish I had the opportunity to say "um, not right now, but hold that thought...".

I suppose the next best thing would be to have a Pip-Boy BB (back-burner) list and allow me to mark and sort quests with it.

Except there's no consequence to putting the quest off permanently, the radiant quests are too similar to each other making them boring quick, and as soon as you finish one, Preston is ready to give you another.

My main problem with Radiant Quests is that they don't have quest chains, or any unique situations in them. They are just blank copies, the system in general has alot of potential, but its not utilized fully. Which is kind of dissapointing as i hoped this was one thing that had improved upon from Skyrim.

Preston is why I no longer join the Minuteman. I just build a bed at Red Rocket and stay there with Dogmeat and Piper. I don't think Preston is a bad companion or character but I hate not being able to walk pass the guy without hearing about some [censored] settlement in trouble.

That's fine if they needed help a few times but I helped a settlement with a ghoul problem so many times now I just have to walk up to them and say I took care of ghouls without having to shoot a single ghoul. Not to mention it makes building these settlements useless. How are these settlements having problem with Raiders and ghouls when I build them a settlement with defenses everywhere? Just shoot them!

Agreed. I have NO clue why the OP uses the term 'forced', because that implies that you MUST do them or THERE WILL BE CONSEQUENCES! Nope, just don't do them unless you really really want to.

A better term for this would be automatic quests -- quests which are automatically placed among your list of available quests. It's just like ANY OTHER quest, except that you have a reminder of them placed into your quest log. If they were not added to your quest log, but were equally available, would that be much different?

I agree that radiant quests can be annoying though, not so much that you keep getting them, but that they are so often similar and bland and repetitive. If they never repeated themselves, and they were more diverse, I don't think that people would be complaining about them so much. Just don't do them. It's just like those stupid escort missions you get from the BOS guy. I hate them. They may or may not have been assigned to me (yes, you need to volunteer for them). But that makes no difference to me. I wouldn't care any more for them if they WERE assigned to me automatically. It's not HOW they get into my quest journal that matters to me, it's the nature of the quests themselves.

You are never forced to complete quests. They may get placed into your journal involuntarily, but they do not necessarily have to be attended to. I think this is only a problem for people who don't like seeing uncompleted quests in their journal.

On the other hand, radiant quests with a time limit that are given to you without your say can be pretty annoying. Especially if you don't want to deal with the repercussions of ignoring them. I think it is ridiculous that every single resource of a settlement you don't protect yourself gets destroyed by each attack. There should be some sort of system in place that provides a chance for your defenses and settlers to handle threats themselves based on the settlements defense rating.

You prefer Piper with her repeated 'What's that For?!?" questions, and the accidental yelling inanely while we're trying to sneak? I think ALL of the companions eventually become annoying in their own ways. Except Dogmeat. Dogmeat is great. At worst, you get a wimper or a bark out of him, which is fine by me since I'm a dog person. Compared with many of the other companions (Valentine, MacCready, Hancock to name the three who I'm currently most sick of), Preston is pretty harmless.

They could have easily fixed this by making it so that the higher the settlement defense rating is the lower the chance for a radiant quest to pop up from that particular settlement. But you know....that's too much programing.

It's not just forced quests. The fact that you are supposed to rebuild the commonwealth and unless you do this the rest of the map feels kinda empty.
