Lets talk about the pip boy app

Post » Wed Dec 02, 2015 2:24 am

I guess it could be quite useful for map interactions if you had an i-pad or something. All I have is my phone and that thing gets way too hot if the screen is left on. So for me, I'd be having to turn the screen on and off to use it.. which kind of negates the purpose of quick interactions.

I can also see a usefulness in combat, you could use it to use stimpacks in combat without bringing up your ingame pip boy. Because using your in game pip boy will no longer pause the game, it would be more beneficial to take one left or right hand off the controls for using stimpacks and such instead of bringing up your in game pip boy rendering you unable to use ANY controls for the time being, or maybe you cant use your in game pip boy in combat at all. Who knows, It's all speculation and such.

I'm pretty sure the pipboy still pauses the game. You don't need to use the pipboy app to apply stimpaks... just use the hotkey system that's already in place

Hopefully they still have the D Pad hotkeys for console.
unless I'm healing crippled limbs, I don't ever use the pipboy for stimpacks.

It was shown at quakecon, and described later by those who were there.

Nice. Hadn't been following the qQakecon stuff. Dunno why they would leave it out, since it worked well, glad to hear they didn't give it the axe.
Cheers!

Way back when the app and the game were announced, I remember a few console players agreeing (not on this forum) that going through the menu was rather a chore on consoles when compared to going through it on a PC which they found significantly easier. Their opinion was that the app would potentially allow them an easier time navigating through the menu when playing FO4 on a console.

I have no idea whatsoever if what they were talking about is true as I've never played a Fallout game on a console. But this is one possibility that I've seen a few people mention some months ago.

I'll probably end up using it as a glorified hotkey to change stations on the radio, with the occasional quest log check while I'm walking home over-encumbered. I don't think it was ever going to completely replace the in-game menu, but I don't think it has to in order to be useful.

From what's come down from Quakecon, using the in-game Pipboy still pauses time. IIRC, I think it was a tweet from Pete Hines, the Pipboy app does not. And as per the E3 presentation, it connects via wifi, not Bluetooth. Or maybe both?

If Bethesda's still using Scaleform to handle UIs, then that explains why it's not so hard for them to port the Pipboy menu over to iOS and Android. It's gonna get weird with UI mods, though. I really doubt our modded UI will change what happens on the app.

Got a response from Pete Hines on the Pip-Boy App and the map:

https://twitter.com/DCDeacon Phone app - will the map stay centered on the PC? Or be static? It would be nice to have it stay centered as we explore.https://twitter.com/hashtag/Fallout4?src=http://forums.bethsoft.com/topic/1538538-lets-talk-about-the-pip-boy-app/hash

So, now we know, the phone app will be useful to see the map as we explore - assuming you can keep your phone from shutting down, running out of power, or going to the lock screen.

On my playstation it is just one button click. Circle button for FO:3 and Vegas, so I am not sure what those people were on about. As I recall it is right mouse button on pc?

I would like to know if I am looking at the map on my ipad with the pip boy app, can I look at something else in game, or are they the same?
