So... lets talk beast races.

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 2:45 pm

After starting Morrowind yesterday and seeing how the Argonians are portrayed in that game compared to Oblivion, i'd love for the beast races to go back to actually looking like a " beast " race and not like some Human-Beast hybrid.

I agree, but it wont happen.

I thought at the very least Argonians and Khajits would be more hunched-over, at least when walking.

Definitely, never thought about it because I hate playing as something other than a human looking player.

cause the "average joes* and lonely children (part of a family that has a lonely child, yah they tend to grow up with a psychotic God complex) will have a heart attack the minute they are exposed to something TOO imaginary and creative, it will melt their Cokacola filled brains

:P

lol just kidding, I'm guessing its a nightmare to animate and make them actually look good when moving and stuff, maybe it a budget OR time restraint that Bethesda just can't get over, they are not Blizzard after all.

I hope the beast races aren't people with lizard/cat faces. That was super super lame.

If you watch the behind the scenes videos, you'd know that budget definitely isn't an issue.

As I recall, they said something about wanting to make beast races more beastly...
can't remember where...

Notice how Bethesda carefully hides all signs of the other races in all the media that has been released so far. Even the BTS videos.

I definately prefered the Morrowind look.
Although I got used to the Oblivion look after awhile. Accepted it just like a sheep.

I want beast races like http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Arena:Races. Seriously though, I would like to see something more like Morrowind, if not exactly like it, as long as they're better animated. That said Morrowind beast races are actually the odd ones out, Arena's you can see in that link, and Daggerfall's were pretty much the same as Oblivion. I wouldn't get my hopes up for any major difference from what we saw in Oblivion.

Of course they are not - Blizzard has more plot and creativity in their RTS than Bethesda in it's latest RPGs. As long as the production is headed by the guy named Tod, who mostly plays sports games and can't define the RPG genre clearly for the live of him, beyond "having stats" :D Oh, and who things that wester RPGs sell more than eastern RPG not because they tend to be multi platform, or because they actually tend to allow role playing freedom, not because of custom character generation and not because they are written in English and not a crappy translation, but because they are LOW FANTASY... Do you expect beast like races form that guy? If someone does not arm wrestle him in to allowing them to do the beast races properly they would be as human as it comes, and probably have an American accent to boot :D

I've heard that here in the Forums, I think mentioned in GI. But I'm in Canada and don't have GI (we get it at a local gaming store but it's hit and miss. They seem to get random issues.) so I haven't red it. But I SOOO hope that is the case. I would like to see the return of the digigrade legs.Animation should not be an issue if they have talented animators. It really isn't any more difficult to animate a walk cycle on legs like that than it is human legs, thanks to IK chains.

I know for a fact that Todd Howard wants to make each race more unique, so there you go. It's in the GI interview video.

the beast races should be like the slaves they were in morrowind. It was awesome to wander into a farm and see a bunch of lizards and cats chained up harvesting....I dont care how they are made to look, just make them to serve.

Maybe technical limitations and time restraints is what made the beast look like what they do in Oblivion. It is a lot of work to make a whole set of animations and armor models. It would svck if the beast races are like they were in Oblivion, but I won't be too dissapointed if they are.

As long as there is a big effect in regards to character interaction and an almost segregated society towards the beast races, I'll be happy.

Morrowind = 3 years, 7 months of development time.
Oblivion = 3 years, 10 months of development time.
Skyrim = 5 years, 8 months of development time.
