Level-up Discretion

Could not find this when searching the forum.

So, will we be able to put off leveling up in "Fallout: New Vegas" as was possible in "Fallout?" Just want to make sure that we are able to boost stats with magazines so that we can grab those perks we want...

Any information regarding this inquiry is appreciated.

I think it would be similar to F3, but you wont become as overpowered as you were

I haven't explicitly seen so (I haven't seen the level up screen for New Vegas yet.) But it's probably a good bet you are going to level up instantly once you reach it. Probably because people would of had the skill magazine idea and make the perk requirements harder still.

I don't think it's really been talked about, I could be wrong though.

But I agree, I'd like to be able to choose when I level up. Nothing really wrong with the way FO3 did it, but sometimes I'd rather keep going then stop and pick where my points go.

It's the same as Fallout 3, it just pops-up once you're out of combat.

Darn, I was hoping that since uh, Alchemy is back they could have had the sleep leveling thing, too.

To be honest I don't think you'll be able to use temporary skill boosts to gain perks anyway.

Like others have said, we don't actually know yet. But I would hope that either way skill magazines do not count towards perk requirements.

I really hope we can put off leveling up. "Fallout" was awesome because you could boost your stats through chems and then get perks you couldn't otherwise obtain. I really hope they've restored this system to "Fallout: New Vegas."

I know what you mean you could save up your skill points and your perks until you were ready to use them.

Same as Fallout 3. Character sheet wont work on poorly designed (well, not designed for this purpose) Pip Boy 3000 interface, and they didn't want to make another one.

And I don't think boosted stats worked in Fallout 3 anyway (like if you took a drug). I actually thought this change was a pretty good idea. Makes it a lot more essential to plan out your character. Obviously, the amount of skill points screwed up the leveling system, but preventing temporary gains from allowing you to take a Perk was a good idea. :thumbsup:

I disagree. Why would Obsidian have perks like Hand Loader (requires 70 Repair skill to acquire) available at level six? Getting 70 points into a skill by level six would be extremely difficult.

At a rate of 14 skill points per level (assumes 8 INT, 10 starting skill points per level, +1 skill point per point in INT), you get 70 skill points. This assumes you haven't gotten the Educated Perk at level 4 (+2 skill points per level), or read any repair skill books (possible since they're rarer). Now take those 70 points, add them to the base skill you get from SPECIAL (21 assuming it follows the Fallout 3 formula and 5 Luck, but 13 if INT is nerfed for that, too- I doubt it will be, though). Oh, but don't just add them- remember that Repair is tagged, too, so add 15 (if they kept it like in Fallout 3).

Sure, you'll have to be dedicated to repairing stuff to get it at level 6, but it's possible. It's a great early Perk for people who are focusing deeply on one field. Alternatively, you can always get it at a later level. There are plenty of good Perks for other characters at level 6, like Toughness.

Good points, but, I don't see the developers making a player invest that much to get a perk at such an early stage of the game. Toughness makes sense where it is because there are no requirements and every character build would benefit from it. Hand Loader only benefits those using standard firearms.

Putting all those points into Intelligence and such, well, it just seems like a lot to ask a player who wants to shoot and repair guns.

You don't have to take perks at the levels they become available, you just have to take some perk. If you don't have the requirement when it's initially available you can take it later.

It seems to me that was a broken game mechanic in the original two games, i never exploited it when i played them either. I for one would be irritated if they broke Vegas to include it.
