"The game eventually logs a huge storehouse of knowledge about how you've played, and subsequently tailors content to your capabilities and experiences. Entering a city, a young woman might approach you and beg you to save her daughter from kidnappers. The game will look at the nearby dungeons you've explored, automatically set the mission in a place you've never visited, and designate opponents that are appropriately matched to your strengths and weaknesses."

someone posted that supposedly from the magazine. with the exception of the randomized dungeon (which actually sounds like a good idea) it is basically level scaling.

But that could still be for ONLY randomly generated quests.

Well I'm only speculating. We have no idea.

I'll trust Beth... for now.

Since people are asking, wanted to briefly touch on level scaling. All our games have had some amount of randomness/levelling based on player level. Skyrim's is similar to Fallout 3's, not Oblivion's.

Hope that addresses some concerns, and we hope you're enjoying the GI cover story.

Level-scaling didn't bother me in Fallout 3 all that much, so YAY, a burden has been lifted

Thanks so much for the clarification.

And YES I enjoyed the GI story more than I can say, everything looks so incredible - you guys have seriously delivered so far.

THANK YOU so much, Bethesda!

Good to hear...people here do seem to quickly jump to conclusions based on a few sentences. I have faith Bethesda learned from some of the complaints associated with the usage of level scaling in Oblivion and will apply the appropriate changes to make sure the game world balances difficulty and accessibility.

noones is saying exactly like fallout 3, I believe he simply used the two as an example since those are the two they themselves have made. Fx Fallout 3 wouldn't extensivly level every creature in the world according to you, oblivion would

Fallout 3's level scaling svcked easily 95% as badly as Oblivion's...it took Obsidian hiring a modder and New Vegas to get it back on the right track.

95% as bad? Not at all, sure it was far from corrected, but it sure as hell wasn't 95% as bad

There's nothing wrong with level scaling if done well. Baldur's Gate 2 had level scaling, and no one ever complained about that.

Aye. And AD&D had it back in the 80's. Modules were rated for levels, the Random Monster and Treasure supplement, etc. It's not like there's one kind of level scaling

the most fun i ever had with oblivion mods were mods like TIE and WAC that had completely unleveled worlds except for main roads which they kept safe and makes sense anyways since their are patrols. there was a real palpable sense of apprehension when you entered a ruin or cave because you never knew what you were going to encounter. it could be some low level bandits or it might be level 40 lich kings and vampires. it is absolutely no fun when you go into a cave knowing full well that since my guy is only level 10 i dont have to ever worry about encountering anything way higher than that. how is that fun at all to essentially always no that you are in no real danger at all. its boring.

Did TIE just [censored] level scaling and not hold "unlevel" it? What I'm getting at is that it too used a form of level scaling. If a boss is set at (your level +10 levels) is that not level scaling as well?

I agree. Oblivions level scaling completely KILLED any sense of "adventure" for the game. Mods certainly fixed that issue.

As far as Skyrim, with the information we have, they WILL NOT be using Oblivion's exact level scaling. That's all I'm trying to point out. Nowhere in that article does it even hint that OB's level scaling will return exactly as it was.

And with Gstaff's clarification, you are correct.

Now, if someone could fill me in on what FO3's scaling and world was like, it'd be much appreciated :icecream:

Morrowind had level scaling too, nothing wrong about it. They'll use a system more similar to Fallout 3 than Oblivion, so I'm not too worried about it.

The ideal would be a world like in Gothic or Risen. Dangerous wildlife & monsters all over the place that will absolutely murder greenhorn adventurers, but if you leave them alone... they will (generally) leave you alone.

A randomly generated quest will have to be level scaled because it can be generated at any level.

No, it does not have to be leveled. That logic you are trying to convey is way off. If we carry that logic through ,we could say that well since in theory I could go across the map at any level, everything I encounter has to be level scaled.

If it is a quest that you can pick up at any level, it does not mean it has to be scaled to that person's level. Maybe you'll just have to do something else before you are good enough to take it on, or maybe it will be really easy and you'll breeze through it. It should not always "designate opponents that are appropriately matched to your strengths and weaknesses" and give you a "challenging but fun" encounter. I want to come across a quest sometimes that punishes me until I cry tears of blood and give up, while other times I find a quest that is "challenging but fun", or even easy but NOT ALWAYS. Personally I would like to see these randomly generated quests to be just that, random. Including hardness. Not everything in the world and in life, especially the random events that spring up at you, are matched to your strengths and weaknesses.

Please god, let there be mods like there were in the other TES games. Out of the entire article, which overall I found really awe-inspiring and very good, THIS bit is what scares me the most.

At the same time, there was never any mention as to the prevalence of these "level-scaled" quests in the game. We have no idea of 10% or 90% of the side quests in the game are done in this manner. However, regardless of this information, many people are more than content to scream and whine about how system is already broken. We have no idea to what extent this feature is implemented.

As long as they don't use what they used with Oblivion, I'm willing to wait and see how it is before commenting. As long as we aren't constantly leveled with everything around us, like in Oblivion, I'll be optimistic.

As long as we get dungeons and locations with personality and some design attention I don't think I'll be disappointed.

When a large segment of your game's time is spent storming through caves and ruins you want to make those places memorable and worth exploring. Fallout 3 had some fantastic locations, it's clear a lot of design work went into them and I can remember a dozen of them off the top of my head. They made an impression. If Bethesda can do this with Skyrim I think it may end up being my favorite game in the series.

Fast Travel and bullet time.
FML

I don't understand why people complain about stuff that is optional, literately that is one of the stupidest things someone can do! If you don't like the fact that those features are in the game then don't use them! Simple as that.

On topic: I like what I have read about the level scaling.

I feel like I've gone through this a billion times ^^. Okay, look. There are two major reasons travel-travel(as it was done in OB) is quite terrible. First off, the very option of being able to teleport breaks immersion quite severely, I remember someone comparing it to a "kill button" for combat. Secondly, it removes the need for the dvs to add better forms of fast-travel, like how it was done in Morrowind, with actual cutural non immersion-breaking systems.

Like I said before, those who think it is terrible don't have to use it. Its optional for a reason. And yes Morrowind's system may have done it better then Oblivion or Skyrim but Morrowind is not Oblivion or Skyrim.

As I already said, the very fact it exists breaks immersion, because the option is part of the game, and it still removes the chances of other and better systens in place for people not using it, almost forcing us to use it.

And no, but that doesn't mean it can't use the best system avaliable? That's like saying Fallout 3 is not Skyrim o0.
