Is level scaling back?..........NOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Post » Fri Feb 18, 2011 8:28 pm

Smilies removed - don't spam.

Edit by Miltiades:
Since people are asking, wanted to briefly touch on level scaling. All our games have had some amount of randomness/levelling based on player level. Skyrim's is similar to Fallout 3's, not Oblivion's.

Hope that addresses some concerns, and we hope you're enjoying the GI cover story.

Have a great night

Level scaling is really a Catch 22. If you put it in people will complain that it makes the game too easy. If you keep it out (like Obsidian did with New Vegas) people will complain it makes the game too hard and ruins exploration.

I highly doubt the scaling will be EXACTLY like Oblivion's. Take a chill pill people.

Hey, New Vegas did it the same way Morrowind did, and nobody complained about the lack of level-scaling there.

Really, if you're going to have level-scaling, you'd be better off not having a leveling system at all. The two cancel each other out.

Maybe I misinterpreted, but the mag said nothing about level scaling at all. All it talked about was getting rid of major skills and levelling based on what skills you choose when the game asked you (which is also based off what skills you use the most). Also, you level up slower if you spend your points on many skills. At the beginning of the game from levels 1-25 you level up fast, but as you gain more levels, it slows down. After 50 (which is when the game stops introducing you new perks), you level really slowly.

This means it is still advisable to choose only a few skills, and focus on them

I will play it of course, and hopefully soon after we will have a mod to FIX the level scaling issue.

Level scaling was the biggest of complaints. I am surprised Bethesda might leave it in.

Leveling scaling was in Morrowind too! Don't forget that!

Leveling scaling SHOULD exist to A CERTAIN EXTENT!
I believe they have improved it a lot from Oblivion! I mean... they must have! There have been so many voices heard concerning this very topic!

"The game eventually logs a huge storehouse of knowledge about how you've played, and subsequently tailors content to your capabilities and experiences. Entering a city, a young woman might approach you and beg you to save her daughter from kidnappers. The game will look at the nearby dungeons you've explored, automatically set the mission in a place you've never visited, and designate opponents that are appropriately matched to your strengths and weaknesses."

someone posted that supposedly from the magazine. with the exception of the randomized dungeon (which actually sounds like a good idea) it is basically level scaling.

From what I've read, scaling WILL NOT be like Oblivion.

I mean really, OP, where are you pulling your information from? What did you read that made you think what you think?

Or are you just making crap up?

Well they only mentioned (as far as i can tell) that enemies would be scaled in random quests. This suggests that there is the possibiltiy that level scaling may only be present in randomly genrated quests.

What about item scaling? Does the article mention that? That's almost worse than level scaling in my opinion.

the only people that would complain about new vegas were the idiots and morons who tried to go north or directly east AFTER they were warned by sunny about the deathclaws and cassadores. if they died they had noone to blame but their stupid selves.

Hopefully level scaling is only present in generated quests.

There's nothing wrong with level scaling if done well. Baldur's Gate 2 had level scaling, and no one ever complained about that.

hey why dont you learn to read before accusing people. or is that to difficult of a concept for you to grasp?

Considering that your OP is composed entirely of emoticons, I think you may want to ask yourself that question. :)

That's not really a catch 22 but more like a damned if you do damned if you don't situation. Some people thought NV was hard?

I hope people realize level-scaling, or some equivalent, has been present in all major Elder Scrolls games and doesn't only come in one incarnation. I just hope the unique item-scaling, punishing me for getting what are supposed to be powerful items at lower levels, doesn't return.

Randomized quests? Interesting. :hehe:

Every Elder Scrolls game has had some kind of level scaling. It doesn't necessarily mean it's as strict as Oblivion's.

baldurs gate was less obvious cause it was a party based game. when you are playing a single player game its much more obvious when every enemy you fight is on your level.

call me elitist or too hardcoe but i actually dont want to be able to go everywhere at early levels. i want to get my ass handed to me if i venture into a dangerous area.

edit: im posting again since some people missed it.
