It seems to me that in game achievements and leveling up of perks can be a huge disincentive for teamwork. If one is faced with the decision in game to either keep an eye on target A, which would result in saving the lives of two teammates, or run after target B who is going to die anyways, but if he/she kills the target personally with a knife for example he/she gets one step closer to having silent footsteps or some other bonus. Its clear to see the incentive here to leave your teammates out to dry in exchange for an achievement if that particular one is something you really want. This is just one example of many that could be made. I wish developers would take a second look at the in game achievements and leveling up systems they use. I think it is clear to see the difference in amount of teamwork that took place in a game like Halo 2 for example and a game like Modern Warfare 2. I think everyone has witnessed plenty of players running around aimlessly in the Call of Duty games desperately trying to get X amount of a certain type of kill. I do not think that everyone should want to use teamwork when they play a video game and should strive to win. I am fully understanding of the desire to just play casually, and being indifferent between winning and losing as long as it is fun. But I don't think the experience for those who enjoy teamwork should be hindered by the games design. I fully support achievements and some sort of leveling up in games, but I think it needs to be done in a way that does not disincentivize teamwork. I apologize for using such cliche examples, but hopefully because of that many will be able to relate.
I realize it is far too late for any changes to be made to Crysis 2, but am curious to see if anyone agrees.
Please do not miss the point I am trying to make. I do not think that games like Halo 2 are perfect and always offer a great experience with plenty of teamwork, I simply believe that on average a game with no achievements or perks that shy you away from the goals of playing as a team and to win will produce a better team experience.
