Leveling in Daggerfall

I've just recently gotten into Daggerfall and played for a few days on a couple throwaway characters to get the basics and such down, but there's something I'm not entirely sure I get about the leveling system. I know a level occurs when you increase your primaries/2 highest majors/highest minor skill(s) 15 times (save the first level). But I was wondering, does capping a major/minor off remove it from the list of 'highests'? that is to say, when it hits 100, does the game no longer care about it and move down the list; allowing you to get levels off your next skill until it hits 100% and so on? or does the game stop counting increases as valid for leveling amongst that subset of skills, effectively wasting all but one of those skills for leveling purposes?

I *think* that when a skill hits 100, you can no longer level up.
Heavy emphasis on *think*. Don't take my word for it, I don't remember why I think this, and I can't come up with any reason why it would be true. It could be a confabulated memory.

IIRC...When a skill hits 100 you can still level up using the other skills, but no other skill can be raised higher than 95.

However, if you raise that skill which is already at 100 (with an enchanted item) the other skills may be raised above 95 and again be used to level up. (I don't know what happens when a 2cnd skill hits 100).

The ONLY skills that can be used to level up are the primaries/2 highest majors/1 highest minor.
Thus there is a limit on how high you can level up, usually level 30 or 31 depending on the starting skill levels.

Most players are going to max out around 22-24. (24 only if you purposefully try to nerf your starting skill values as much as possible) Not that it really matters, as any DF character should be a god by the time they're 15 or 18, and that's if they're taking their sweet time :)

But no, taking a skill to 100 doesn't remove it from the "highest" list. You don't then work down the ladder, you're just done.

You can train any miscellaneous skills up to 100 without worrying about triggering a 95 cap on your class skills. I can verify that, at least.

I don't know much about the 95 cap, though. If I had to guess, based on how the miscellaneous skills DON'T trigger it, I'd say it's governed by your level-determining skills (those just mentioned by jeabo), which, significantly, are not all of your majors and minors.

Another thing I don't know is rules about whether those minor/major skills used to determine your level can change. Say, you started Running off as a minor skill--a really high minor with 30 points, and it zooms up to 100. What if your Jumping skill, also a minor but only 15 at start, then rises to 100? Do you suddenly gain a level then? Does your maximum possible level change to reflect those 15 additional increases?

Thanks to the above for the posts, I think I've got a much better grasp of it now. I do have another problem though, sound in DF, music seems to work fine running under either the set of options suggested by the Beth download, or under MPU-401 on port 330, but sound effects never seem to work and I can't really figure it out, updated my drivers and messed with various other things and no success, if anyone has any suggestions I'd appreciate it.

No.
e.g. Using your example (Running 30, Jumping 15) assume that Running stays at 30 and Jumping rises to 40. Only 10 of those skill increases will count toward leveling since Jumping did not become your "1 highest minor" until it went to 31.
Bottom line: No matter which minor skill reaches 100, there will be only 70 skill increases available for leveling purposes from the minor skills.

About the sound problem again, I figure a dxdiag and my dosbox config would be helpful, messed around with some more settings and such today but I couldn't make any progress, still just music, no beautiful chorus of 'HALT!' or skeleton howls, an empty world, indeed.

e.g. Using your example (Running 30, Jumping 15) assume that Running stays at 30 and Jumping rises to 40. Only 10 of those skill increases will count toward leveling since Jumping did not become your "1 highest minor" until it went to 31.
Bottom line: No matter which minor skill reaches 100, there will be only 70 skill increases available for leveling purposes from the minor skills.

Thanks! this fixed it completely, amazing how much more immersive it is with sound.

Edit: Unrelated to the above, but I just had to tell someone about this, I made a new character when I was mucking about after I read the above stuff and fixed my game, new character started off as hated with Daggerfall for some reason, the first time he ever set foot in a town he got charged with criminal conspiracy! I love this game.

You don't need an xdiag since Daggerfall is a DOS game. lol

Anyway, you better use MPU-401 as your MIDI output instead of SB 16. It is much much better; only downside is that the Dosbox recorder does not support it.
