Leveling Up; Some Answers Needed

Post » Fri Dec 16, 2011 6:09 am

I tried looking for a definitive answer, but when searching for 'leveling' and Skyrim, I only found bits and pieces. So I thought I would just make a post and see if others can help fill in the gaps that I don't understand.

From what I am reading, it looks like the scaling of monsters/loot is predetermined. Here is what I think I know, am I right?

You enter a dungeon as a Level 1, the dungeon may be pre-set for a Level 10-15; so if you enter this dungeon at Level 1, the dungeon will be set for Level 10. You are too young little boy, go home or you will have your backside spanked.

You enter a dungeon as a Level 10, the dungeon may be pre-set for a Level 10-15; so if you enter this dungeon at Level 10, the dungeon will be set for Level 10. You are probably ready to tackle this dungeon, proceed young man.

You enter a dungeon as a Level 20, the dungeon may be pre-set for a Level 10-15; so if you enter this dungeon at Level 20, the dungeon will be set for Level 15. You are probably going to have an easy time in here clearing this dungeon.

Using the above logic then;

You enter a dungeon as a Level 1, the dungeon may be pre-set for a Level 10-15; so if you enter this dungeon at Level 1, the dungeon will be set for Level 10. You are able to enter the dungeon, but you know you have to leave as the monsters are too powerful to fight. However, when you return later in the game at a Level 25, you are going to smoke these monsters as they are only a Level 10 and you are now at Level 25 coming back to clean this dungeon out. Is this correct?

Now here are my questions on Leveling. My wife plays and whenever there is a level up, she uses it and applies towards her health/stamina. She then sometimes uses her perks, and sometimes she just keeps them. At any given time, her level is checkable where she is in the game. I think now she is a level 17. For me, I haven't been using my level ups to advance. My in game check states I am level 10, however, if I was to use all of my level ups that are stored, I would jump up to level 19. IE: I have 9 level ups I haven't used yet.

I haven't felt I needed to level up. There were 3 dungeons where I couldn't get all the way through, and at this point, figured I would come back to them in the future, but meanwhile kept adventuring along in other places. I have an axe that does like 33 damage (and 15 magic damage I think) and I wear heavy armor. I can move through areas and kill dragons, so I didn't think I needed to use my level ups. Should I level up everytime like my wife does, or should I keep saving the level up until some point in the game, I need them as I can't proceed in my current state of level and equipment? I suppose I am wondering is if there is a drawback to what I am doing by exploring at level 10 and not using my level ups.

Which brings up a question using the dungeon pre-set levels scenario at the beginning of this post. If I did use all my level ups and be a level 19, then proceed to go to those 3 dungeons I had trouble in, would I just smoke through them now because I waited until now to go back?

I have read that some quests won't become available until a certain level, but what level are they referring to? Are they referring to the level number that is displayed when checking your level (Level 10), or the real level you would be had you been using your level ups (Level 19)? The same would go for dungeons, what level do they register for the check, the in game displayed level or the true level you would be at if you chose to use your level ups?

All the things I have read don't specify the above information, so I wanted to get clarification on them. A lot of information is out there to level up fast, level up with cheats, or level up with bugs/glitches etc...; but nothing I could find delves into how to tread your level ups and what pros/cons are there for using them as they happen, or to save them.

Anyone care to jump into this and discuss the answers so I can be better informed on these issues?

Thank you,

Timo

I'm not completely sure on how the lvling system works in skyrim but there will always be places that are too hard and places that are too easy (you can always adjust the difficulty at any time). What I do know is that you should be lvling up every time like your missus as some quests leading you to some dungeons that otherwise would be impossible at a low level are now available, and with your new perks be able to defeat any challenge easier. NPCs will always(?) send you to an area that is for your level or similar, other dungeons will be your level the moment you enter them, whether its 10 or 50, otherwise will stay that level for ever. Can't really say much else as I'm not 100% sure myself, but I hoped some of this helped.

I very well could be wrong on this but I'll try :)

I don't think there are "preset" levels for anything in Skyrim, my understanding is the world levels as you do.

I also dont think you have levels stored up, you just havent used the perks and upgrades for the levels you have gotten so far.

The only thing gaining a "level" gives you is 1 perk and the ability to put 10 points in either health, stamina, or magic.

Killing things or completing quests in themselves does not make you gain levels, individule skills increasing is what causes you to level.

Again I may be wrong, but this is how I understand it.

Yes, I have read that link, and it is probably one of the most helpful.

Which after reading it, also reminded me on how they are calling it Character XP. I was generically calling Leveling Up.

But it didn't go into what Character XP Level is being used to set dungeons and npc's; the displayed Level 10, or the proposed Level 19 if I chose to use my level ups.

If the game uses the displayed Level 10, I could basically just keep going into the dungeons and when I encounter one where I can't kill the boss, use the level ups then for my character.

I will still follow this post to see if anyone knows the answer on that question.

Thank you for the link.

It's a lot more fun using all the unique perks so I'd say just use your level ups.

Although I like saving 2-3 level ups so I can get fully healed in the middle of a boss fight :)

I know right now, I am a Level 10 in the game display, and I have been a Level 10 Character XP for a little while now.

For a test when I found out my wife was leveling up everytime it says she gained a Character XP Level; was when I used the Character XP Level process, it would take me all the way to Character XP Level 19. Of course, this also gives me like 9 additional perks that could be used. After the test, I went back one save game to be as I was. I just wanted to run the test to see what my true Character XP Level would be, or IS?

Maybe someone will know the answer who reads this.

Does the dungeons and NPC's use your displayed character xp level to determine the lock range, or does the game use your real character xp level even if you have not used them manually in the game to bring up your health/magicka/stamina and gain your perks.

That is the piece I would to know.

You touch on the reason why I think I have not been leveling up my character even though I could. I haven't really felt (playing Adept) like I was underpowered and needed to level up my character. I was/am handling most things that come my way. I think only 3 bosses gave me an issue and I could always come back to them. But all the other dungeons and quest I have been on, seemed fine with my character xp level as it is.

So I have been thinking that my next boss fight that gives me problems, I would level up at that time. Until then, I am just continuing onward in the game, but I am curious what number the dungeons and npc's are based on.
