Levelling Problem Major skill setup

I am wondering what you do to address the levelling problem.

I think what i do is put some conflicting skills as majors (i.e blade &blunt, H&L armour) this essentially reduces the number of major skills to 5, slowing levelling.
I would also make sure to level a few easy to level minor skills per level, like alchemy or hand to hand, so i get a biger increase.

I think thats what i did. Its been a while and im just coming back to oblivion with the hopes of creating a new character and having a flawless playthrough, so id like to remember how i addressed this problem to make sure i never have to accept a measly +2 on level up.

Since everything levels with your character, don't put into Majors the skills that you will use all the time. So, no weapon, armor, and recovery skills set to be majors. Mercantile is a good one to pick as a major as it levels so slowly. I think Speechcraft also levels slowly, but I bribe everyone as I am not playing that mini game.

The trick is to pick skills that will be used infrequently but not frequently or never. Kind of like the Minor skills from Morrowind were supposed to be.

Or, you can get a mod like Natural Leveling which seems to keep the world in check for me with levels. Although I still follow the no frequent skills in major scheme even with that.

Edit And stop chasing the +5 Attributes. It is not a strategy with a good outcome long term.

Without mods and at the default difficulty, "measly" +2's are perfectly adequate in my opinion.

What I like to do is create characters with three or four major skills they plan using frequently (including at least one weapon skill, unless it is a pure mage) and then fill the other skills in with slow levelling skills that any character can make use of, like acrobatics, mercantile, restoration and block.

I don't like efficient levelling because I find it rather boring, but some skills work well as minor skills because they level quickly and contribute towards good attribute bonuses.

Armorer makes a good minor because it leads to endurance boosts. Pay for training to level armor up to 50 so you can repari magic weapons and that will guarantee at least +3 to endurance each level, but you will likely get some +4 or +5 bonuses.

Conjuration and alchemy make good minors because they both level very quickly and lead to intelligence boosts (important if you are a spell caster). Alteration is kind of the same and leads to willpower boosts.

Light and heavy armor work well either as major or minor skills.

Sneak and Security make nice minor skills for melee types because they lead to Agility boosts (important for melee fighters because of the stagger reduction).

Marksman levels slowly, so it is best as a major if the character plans on relying on a bow for more than hunting.

Yeah, i doubht ill stick strictlly to trying increase minors.


some good tips, thanks, hopefully ill make the right choices when i set up my next character.
Although athletics and acrobatics i would never have as majors before because you use them all the time and can level up unexpectedly by doing nothing.. it might make sense to use have them there though.

Atheletics yes, but not acrobatics. Unless you run around intentionally jumping everywhere you go, it levels pretty slow, even as a major. Heck, even if you intentionally jump everywhere you go, acrobatics still levels rather slowly. If you want to make it go up quickly, you need to go under a bridge (where your jump will be interupted) and move around while mashing on the jump button. Even then, it can take several minutes of mashing the jump button just to get one level of acrobatics.

That sounds like itll be increadiblly slow at levelling and just a bit unnatural for your major skills to mean nothing.
How slow do you level with this approach? And isint the start of the game unduely hard since all your main skills are 20 points below where they should be?

Depending on your playstyle, the journeyman perk that lets you dodge by rolling left/right can be useful. There are also a few places that are easier to get to if you have high acrobatics, but hardly anywhere it is really necessary. There are a few forts with bandits that spawn up on ledges you cannot reach without decent acrobatics, for instance, but you can always take them out with ranged attacks. There are a few caves with canyons you cannot jump across without decent acrobatics, but you could almost always find another way to get there if you explore all the passages. Thieves with high acrobatics may be able to jump to second story balconies and gain easier access to a house they want to burgle. But overall, acrobatics is not as useful as it could have been.

You will level up just fine. It's not like the skills are super sloooooooowwwww to level. On my current character, my weapon and armor skills are in line with my character skills. It all works out. If you need to for the first 5 levels or so, drop the difficulty (it just adjusts damage numbers)

This is good advice. If you're playing on PC, get a mod which fixes or does away with level scaling, if you're on console then just play on the default difficulty and you'll be fine.

Depends on whether you want to experience the high level contentsometime this decade. Minor skills go up fairly easily and the content is almost all levelled to the same level as the PC (a few things are levelled to be higher). If you make all your major skills infrequently used skills that are slow to level to begin with, like mercantile, then your overall character will level very slowly. This will lead to an easier playthrough with phenominal attribute bonuses, but it will take a very long time to get to the higher levels where you experience the more difficult enemies and the higher level loot. So, it is sort of personal preference.
