Levitation and Flying

Post » Thu Mar 25, 2010 5:56 pm

I really hope levitation is brought back. It was awesome to have in Morrowind, and the only reason it wasn't in Oblivion was for the Dev's convenience. Hopefully Skyrim will have open cities, and it won't be a problem.

I want levitation to return, but no dragon mounts please.

Dragons should be ancient, crafty and powerful . . . not some creature reduced to the role of "flying horse with big teeth".

But what about the TES Dragoons? :flamethrower:

I will agree if... You can think up a levitation animation that doesn't look stupid.
I'll be waiting.

Simple is best. Just have your character glide up with minimal animation as in this Castlevania clip (spoilers if you haven't played it, just watch from 2:02 to 2:25):

Alternately, have a circular glyph appear underfoot that simply lifts the character. No floating legs/waving arms nonsense.

So far I have not been convinced.

If you prefer, I guess we could always have the character desperately kick his legs in a midair second effort, Yoshi-style :)

it's not gonna be near as powerful as morrowind. I highly doubt bethesda are gonna want you bypassing 80% of content via levitate-flying.

I want em all back.

Levitation, jump, slowfall, sanctuary and lock.

And the climbing skill.

Levitation is bad leave it in Morrowind. I could just use Levitation and say screw you to the nord guards that I'm running away from.

Yah there were alot of melee enemies so saying screw them isnt really a solution though... I would like levitate but only if they could make it so it wouldnt trump melee enemies.

Umm.. give them secondary ranged weapons? Don't see a problem with that. The only place this wouldn't work would be with beasts and I'd say if they're getting hurt and there is no way for them to fight back, they run away. I really don't see a balancing problem with levitation.

Also, yes I want levitation back. And the ability to cast a 3 second duration jump spell that lets me leap for miles. That was way fun in Morrowind.

Don't forget Mark and Recall.

First: So? Second: You can't think of any way for guards to stop a person from levitating? Bows, ranged dispel magic, battle mage guards that can give airborne chase?

I would only want levitation in Skyrim if they made it so that 50 cliff racers attack you once you are 10 feet off the ground.

Guess I'm one of the few then, who doesn't miss it. Slowfall and fortify jump skill for one jump is good enough for me, combined with a climbing skill for the non magical characters. Levitation I would be ok with only if it prevented combat or recasting, and not the nutty flying we got in MW. Levitation was one of the things that made that game cheesy for me. In DF, didn't we use levitation mostly to cross dungeon chasms? So I want it back as a solution for a problem, but not as a convenience factor.

I used to think that levitation was a fair and balanced spell, but after playing games without it (Inside Mournhold/Oblivion) I've come to realize that it does truly break the game. Most NPCs use melee to attack you, and levitation completely cripples them. Many bosses have magic, but it's the melee enemies supposed to be hard that it becomes far too overpowered. Go high enough with AOE spells and you can easily dodge magic and ranged attacks while raining fire down on them.

tl;dr: Combat levitation is overpowered.

Levitation can stay gone since it's likely that cities will occupy their own cells again. On the morrowind discussion, everyone knows maximum jump and acrobatics spells with a 1 point constant slowfall effect were the best way to cross mountains. Levitation was just to cheese Vivec.

I am tired of the consoles ruining good pc games.

ps. don't make me get my arena floppies out.

I really hope levitation makes it back, limited and difficult to cast.

Also I like the sky-walk animations from morrowind. It's dignified, rather than just appearing as a floating body.

I really dont understand where these nay-sayers come from.
What do you mean its game-breaking?
And what on earth does ' its used to bypass 80% of the game' mean?

Levitation is one of the things that makes Morrowind the best game ever for me. To fly to the top of a huge mushroom, just to see what the view is from there is priceless. Levitation allows me to access the entirety of the map, not just some pre-set path.

It is not broken. All that needs doing is a small tweak of the AI so they can handle a target thats airborne.

I truly despise and detest those kinds of games that call themselves an RPG, but are a glorified platform game really.
Fable 1 is a good example, that is not an RPG. It is too limited and linear.
An RPG not only allows me to control my character, but also have control over the game(world).

If I choose to levitate to the top of a tower, bypassing a lot of guards then this is not cheating. Its clever.
Why would I want to fight through long winding corridors just to reach a boss? Thats platform, not RPG.

Nothing is more annoying than having to move a short distance west, but cant, cause there is a mountain in the way I have to circle. Thats a cheap trick to make the game last longer/ be more difficult. Other cheap platform style tricks include a time limited level and balancing beam levels, where one wrong button makes you fall to your death. Boring, and lame.
Ill float over that mountain, thank you.

Im a wizard. I damage peoples strength to root em on the spot, I turn invisible, I make their pals attack them.
These are also not gamebreaking or unfair.

By Azura, if you want a limited and pre-set platform style game, go play fable or legacy of kain. Dont petition for elder scrolls to be dumbed down and stunted as well.

There are some good points coming from both sides but I like what somebody said earlier. Let's not forget this is a single player game so for those that don't like levitation the solution is very simple, don't use it. To the others, let the levitating begin !!! But I still cast my vote against the walking animation I mean cmon.... imagine you are an uber mage who has studied all your life and have finally learned how to levitate. You are the baddest yet coolest dude, able to rise above the ground..... how would you like to do that ? with a walking stance ? in a standing position ? sitting cross legged ? upside down ?

oh I know... there's another topic I started about different fighting animation for different races, why not have mages of different races having their own style of levitation ?

thanks for reminding us of the other missing abilities like mark/recall intervention, etc. I miss those too !!

So let enemies use it too if they're magic users. Or make them sensible so they look for cover when being attacked by an enemy they can't hit.

It doesnt seem that many of those vouching for levitation are in favor of making it fair... there is already no clip if you want to fly around btw. No clip should also give you that no/low challenge feeling that you are missing from not having levitate.
