Levitation and Flying

"that can be adressed"

Im all in favour, an idea mentioned above, for a new effect called 'ground'. available for poisons, spells, enchantments.
When cast on NPC or player it will dispel levitation and prevent levitation for duration of effect. You'd have to think to levitate. 'if i get too high that guard will fire a ground arrow and ill die cause Ive been ignoring acrobatics.'

Im also in favour of guards having bows and the AI to deal with an airborne enemy. Also flying enemies, spellcasters and whatnot.

I do think a simple wolf or similar should be stumped by levitation. In that case, they should flee, not hang around to get picked off.

In summary, levitation is a wonderful game mechanic that opens up the world so much, allows freedom of travel and viewpoint and adds a whole new dimension to combat. What is not to like?
Play warrior and dont touch it if you dont want, but Im a mage. I get hit bad by a melee warrior, but I have the illusion, destruction (and as argued in this thread, alteration) to deal.

edit: One of the things that increased immersion for me in Morrowind were cliffracers. I know, they were overly abundant. But, i had to look at the sky. it was 3-dimensional.
I sorely missed airborne enemies in oblivion, even if i couldnt fly. It made the game more.. flat.

I would like levitation if they could balance it out but that seems hard to do... I dont think the melee npcs should always just have to run because levitation trumps them though. I cant imagine them outrunning you when you can glide over slopes/craters in the terrain that would likely slow down an enemy on foot.

A simple bandit might be trumped by levitation, but a rogue battlemage would certainly be able to cast ground. Guards would have a few ground arrows standard, for those pesky rooftop thieves. Etc.

It really wouldnt be hard to balance with the addition of the ground effect, wich should be cheap to cast and easy to alchemise, I think the hard part then would be to keep levitation a distinct advantage:) Youd have to be invisible, attack, recast invisibility..

edit: make levitation a crime in cities;) See, balancing levitation is not hard. Arguments to keep it out are hard to defend though

Whether one believes it's cheating or not, it definitely needs balancing.

That we can all agree on. :)

Yes:) But with the advances Bethesda has made since oblivion (wich after all was a rushed game due to late knowledge of xbox specs) I fully expect Skyrim to have vast improvements in AI. (Good parts Morrowind + oblivion) - (bad parts of both) + (new advances) = Skyrim. (best game ever.)

Whatever side were on here, we can all agree to be giddy like a kid a week before its birthday for 11-11-11.

Hopefully flying reatures will be able to fly, not just visually hover.

I am tired of the consoles ruining good pc games.

ps. don't make me get my arena floppies out.

*sigh* Morrowind was also for the original xbox and it had levitation, everything except houses and such were in the same cell <_<

I hope it comes back, if enemies are tweaked.Although its unlikely unless Beth has figured out a way to make everything a cell again with all the npcs.I think that was why Oblivions cities were their own cells, correct me if im wrong.

Bad argument... how is god mode not cheating exactly? Please think before responding.

How is it cheating?!?!?! It is a single player game!!!! You arnt cheating anyone. The game comes with an editor for a reason.

As has already been discussed, there are ways they can design the game with levitation in mind:

Cheat codes or cheat button sequences, maybe to involve godmode - why are they labeled "cheat something"?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cheat

"There are various forms of cheating in video games. On console platforms cheating is commonly a combination of buttons. An example of this is the Konami Code of "Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A, Start." This code appeared in a number of games, most famously in Contra, for the NES, where it gave the player 30 lives, rather than 3. In role-playing games one of the most popular methods is using "trainer" programs, which usually greatly inflate a player's statistics or attributes. In strategy (real-time or turn-based) games, similar programs are often used to maximize player's own resources, or weakening opponents. Modifying game data files is also a popular way to cheat in games. This mostly applies to computer games."

So even if it's singleplayer it's still called cheating (talking about godmode here, which also is a nice *tool* during development, i.e. of mods). If there are features in the game that allows easy non planned exploits (a 2 second feather will still take you to town using fast travel), it's a bug, and I would call that cheating. If there are features in the game that are overpowering (pick your favorite), it's a balance issue. Not cheating, but more a choice on how you want to play. The problem is that those that doesn't want to actively use exploits, sometimes have no choice.

On topic:
I never fought any levitating spellcasters in MW, as far as I can remember anyway. I don't like having abilities AI can't utilize. And I don't like being completely unable to fight them, if i.e. I'm a warrior type class without any magic capabilities or bow skill, I'd be useless. Also I think AI should recognize the use of "unfair tactics", and try to hide instead if they know they can't do anything about me (i.e. shooting arrows from an elevated position they've tried to reach but couldn't). Be more adoptive to the situation, and also depending on who or what they are.

Levitation was cool for wizard towers or getting around when there was no fast travel. I could do without it although,
I don't know how to do the spoiler thing stop reading if you haven't done the thieves guild quest in oblivion.
but it'd make stuff like the thieves guild quest from oblivion totally moot at the end. Stop reading if you don't want a spoiler.
You could just use levitation from the beginning and just go up the chimney instead of escaping down it. Or float to a balcony near the elder scrolls library of the tower with an invisibility spell so no one sees you.

Sorry I don't know how to use the spoiler tag.
