IF levitation is in this game...

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 7:15 pm

I can't believe wh anyone would say it doesn't belong to TES. It has been in TES for a long time and it should be. And anyone trying to relate DBZ with possible levitation combat in Skyrim should have their heads examioned. It has worked well in the past and there's no reason why it wouldn't now.

When has it worked well in the past? Morrowind levitation combat was non-existent, and daggerfall was even worse. never played arena but i'm sure it was more of the same.

Yup in fact I can only see it working "BETTER" now than it did in the past. :D Oh how I loved soring the skys in morrowind (and still do) but all the fog made it where I couldn't see much, They have made things much better and I want to fly the skies with the dragons ^_^

It wasn't non-existent, I pretend to be a wraith flying and attacking :D. Of course those darn mages and archers are my worst enemies :D Always getting shot down.

I think the DBZ thing is being taken too literally by a lot of people. No one suggested that DBZ was going to actually be in the game in any way. He was referring to dynamic air combat, and I would love to see both the PC and NPCs capable of levitation.

Well the game has physics now so getting hit in the air could send you flying some. I wonder how that would have been in Oblivion if it had it.

levitation isz up and down, the spell you are thinking of was one of the flight spells and of which with levitation you can not really do DBZ combat.

If aircombat is a possiblity, how will ever enemies without magica or a bow be able to hurt you? Infact most enemies will not have the capebility to take you down. Doesnt sound well balanced to me, but it depends on what you wish from a game i suppose.

Thank you, that is exactly what i was referring to. I just wanted to aid people visually with an example of dynamic air combat and i guess that was a mistake.

of course you'll have an advantage over most enemies. Getting levitation IS NOT supposed to be easy. You need to be a very powerful wizard to be able to handle it. Unlike a hulking warrior or an invisible thief a mage needs something to protect himself to, AND THAT is magic which levitation is a part of.

Levitation is/was slow and costs plenty of mana. You can't be up in the air that long unless you're über-mage but then you could destroy things even more easily by more direct assault... Of course it can be usefull when used well, but the same applies to everthing else as well. Don't punish the player for using head a bit more than the most direct way of doing things requires...

I can come around the idea of levitation should be very hard to master. I would like to see it as a reward for completing the main-quest, or maybe reaching the top in the mages guild. However it should require a lot of magica. For the most important is that it doesnt ruin the gamebalance or make the quests way to easy.

Note that i do want a really rewarding gift for completing the main quest. Levitation could be an idea. However im not sure i like the idea of combat while levitating, its to much of an advantage.

I think this is just unnecessary, we are getting 5 spell effects and if all of those arn't summons one will probably be levitation

Also consider how levitation will effect the design of dungeons, landskape and quests.

How will obstacles turn out for the player if he has levitation? Do we need a new design for dungons and some areas of the open world due to the fact that the player has levitation. Should levitation make things easier for the player just like other skills help you more effectivly kill enemies?

Yes, assuming that the whole game will be exactly the same as Oblivion and you only change one thing... gaaaah!

What I find strange is that most people here want to keep auto regenerating magic and then claim that using levitation in combat is overpowered...
I'm going to mope around in the angry-room now. *tch, grr, tch, grr* :banghead:

Im imagining flying through the air in a Skyrim town could go something like this:

Crash!
Guard: yeah scum, we dont like floaty wizard types here. Good thing we have these arrows of grounding eh?
Now pay the fine.

See? Not overpowered at all.
Levitation is so much fun, it literally opens up the world and makes it truly 3d, I hope it is in.
Like in Morrowind it needs to be an expensive spell with a decent level requirement.
And with all the advances in tech aerial combat should be improved.
Some little gadgets for NPC's like that 'ground' effect I used above (works as advertised, cancels out levitation.)
would also be nice.

to be fair, when levitation was first introduced I'm not sure DBZ was even around O_O!

DBZ was around a good 10+ years before morrowind. At least in Japan it was.

Now midair fights could be interesting if the mobility is correct, plus watching someone fall after being defeated would be kinda cool.

This thread actually brings back some memories. I have a friend that when we were younger just starting to play Morrowind, both of us were huge into Dragonball Z. We made DBZ characters in game(I was goku and I believe he was Vegeta, not sure) but we would make our own spells for blasts and just play like that. Hand-to-hand and destruction were the two big choices for skills, as well as acrobatics and athletics. It took a lot of imagination to play like that but we were young and had plenty of it haha.

While I wouldn't want Skyrim to take after DBZ now it was something that triggered an interesting memory. However, I wonder how the handled the spell system for Skyrim, one topic in general what happens when two fireballs collide in Skyrim? What if it was a fireball and a ball of ice. Hopefully it will do more than just go through each other. Maybe collide, flash and then bounce off each other going separate ways and exploding in the surroundings.

A lot of people seem to be forgetting Elder Scrolls is high fantasy.
It simply can't be high fantasy if my mage can't fly about. In Morrowind it wasn't really all that easily 'exploited' considering you couldn't cast it in any of its useful forms until you had your skill up there well enough and even then the durations were low and you were generally slower until you could cast the highest forms of it.
I'm all for it coming back, especially since they've retooled how a lot of things work, as long as it retains its status as a hard-to-use spell.

Plus, without levitation we wouldn't have gems like the scrolls of windform.

Exactly right, the only way it was "properly" exploited was if you modded it or used the construction set, but even then it's not the most effective thing, but even if it were it'd be your fault for having modded it.

Exactly. :P

I just really don't get all the people that like the idea of game mechanics and content just being ripped out of the game.
If it's 'broken' or 'overpowered' it can be fixed as opposed to just removed.
