Lichdom

Post » Wed Oct 19, 2011 12:45 am

I would like to see Skyrim or some future Elder Scrolls game give players the option of becoming a Lich. Much like the player has been able to become a vampire in past games. However, the process of becoming a lich would be more involved. Since both liches, and the process to become them already exist in the lore it doesn't seem like too much of a stretch to give us this option.
To start the process you would need to have some proficiency in magic. Perhaps expert level in several schools that would most likely be needed for the transformation, Restoration and Alteration maybe. Then there would be other steps that were actually covered in Oblivion, like transferring you soul, temporarily, into an in inanimate object(hourglass). The benefit would be aimed at magic focused characters of course, perhaps bonuses in magic schools and/or magicka pools, but a decrease in physical combat abilities.

Interesting idea. I doubt that many NPC's would want to talk to you though!

Since MW the dev's seemed to have avoided enabling you to become something that would make NPCs instantly attack you hence why vampirism enabled you to stay more human looking. I doubt lichs can do that.

Terrible idea. You would instantly become a pariah to every NPC and be granted no quests. Your only friends would be other Liches, but of course, they would give no quests, either. You would also be unable to complete the main quest, seeing as everyone would try to kill you on sight.

Since liches can be considered an upgraded form of spellcaster, this idea would have no bearing on the game for non-spellcasters.

It's an idea I've considered myself, and in theory it is good, however it will be impractical in regards to the game mechanics and storyline... Furthermore, the time for suggestions have come and gone.

The liches that can retain a normal human form are few and far between. Even if you did become a lich, whats the point if you look exactly the same bar maybe a few stat changes? Becoming a walking corpse doesn't exactly sound that attractive, but hey, more options to the player I suppose.

Yeah but that would be one of the trade offs for people who would like to RP such a character.

A lengthy and complex quest for such a character would be really interesting, especially if they have no interest in the main quest like me.

Doesn't being Dovahkiin kind of qualify you for that, though? You have the soul of a Dragon, after all.

Having the soul of one and actually being one are totally different.

And what? You become invincible until the object you put your soul in in another cell is randomly destroyed in accordance to some formula? And then you have to go back to a previous save and move the object to some other cell, most likely having to go back aways so that you can reach the object in time before the formula says to destroy it again? Cool idea but i don't see how it would work out.

Mostly because "I sense a disturbance in the law." Already does that. No need to be a mutated form of anything! :glare:

They could make it so that complications during the ritual resulted in you needed to have the object on your...erm...person... at all times, thus when you "die" the offender can just search the body for the item and destroy it.

What i was thinking was that becoming a lich didn't instantly turn you into a walking corpse. I was thinking more that the magic and the process gradually twisted and rotted your body, but in the early stages you could continue to pass as living. For the sake of quests and game mechanics. So, as far as the amount of time your character is involved with the events of Skyrim, he/she will still be passable as living being, but with some loss of personality.

You aware that there were lich mods who solved all the problems like that?
Also, in case you don't like it, simply don't become a lich!
I don't like vampires and I simply won't become one... end of story.
No need to be a dike.

No, this idea svcks for people who don't use magic.

Yeah!
Let's remove Mage Guild also!
And you know what?
Let's remove Dark Brotherhood and Thieves Guild also since it svck for people who don't sneak!
Twit. >_>

OT:
Sure, why not? :)
I was always wondering why one couldn't become a lich in TES when lore supported that.
I personally don't prefer playing as a mage, but in case I do, I would gladly become a lich.

Transferring your soul to an inanimate object was a temporary part of the process. And in the quest that mentions this in oblivion, all you had to kill the future lich was pick pocket the hourglass containing the soul and they died. Not exactly invincible.

Awesome.

This is as valid of an Idea as becoming a werewolf/vampire.

It sounds like an epic four-five hour quest for immortality that many people would do after they complete the main quest-line.

I would probably make a Mage with this being my ultimate goal.

A lich represents the pinnacle of necromancy, and as such would always be attacked on site, but who cares? You're more than likely an evil being in the first place.

Its certainly an interesting idea, but ultimately will be relegated to mods i think. I'd like to see Bethesda come out with a expansion that added factions, hidden cities, and general content for players who chose to become werewolves, vampires, or a lich. I just don't see it happening though, too much work for what is ultimately going to be perceived as a catering to a very small percentage of the player base.
