Life and Death

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 1:41 am

I want to be afraid of dying in combat. Not every time of course. If i'm a skilled warrior and some street punk tries to mug me then dispensing of him should be no large task, but when going up against skilled fighters, ancient horrors, mountain giants and the fricken King of Worms, I want to be unsure if I will make it out alive or not. I want the battle to be epic, yet desperate at times. I want to use my actual skills as a fighter to go blow to blow with my enemy in a struggle over who will walk away. I want a fight against someone to last for more than a few seconds.

One of the first thing's I noticed when I played Fallout: New Vegas for the first time was the fear of death. Wondering around dangerous areas and fighting fearsome opponents felt frightening and fun. Sometimes I didn't know if I would make it or I would win but just barely, limping away, unsure if some new threat would come out of the wilderness and finish me off.

As long as they fix the level scaling I'm sure I'll struggle to stay alive..:)

The fear of dying in a game comes from the realization that you will loose lots of cool stuff you worked rly hard for or that you will have to go back to the very beginning of the level...kinda like Demon Souls. There is of course the option of strapping yourself to a taser making it zap you every time you die but it's not a particularly popular choice. Now since Bethesda has already set the tone for Skyrim by keeping fast travel you can be 100% sure it will be tailored for casual gamers and casual gamers hate loosing all their stuff. I'm sure someone will come up with a mod that will change this but it will take time.

According to the article it's much more brutal sounding - I'm hoping I'll be as tense as I was in certain areas of NV too

I just finished reading the article.

I really hope the hack n slash fighting style is gone. I want to put more thought into combat. I just hope the magic system isn't as generic as I fear.

Demons Souls was very rewarding in it's challenge but doesn't fit the bill of TES. As for your assessment of fast travel and all that jazz, refer to my post log in a response to a fast travel topic a few minutes back.

Overall, your connection is unfounded bud. I say that without bias but a bit of frustration towards you.

Did... did you post in the wrong thread?

EDIT: Oh sorry. I didn't realize who you were talking to. I need to read the thread better. :P

The magic sounds Ok, like different spells will affect different things in addition to health and you can set up small traps and whatnot.

What else other than the fear of loosing everything you've gained could actually make you fear death ingame?(provided it's not a horror game) Fast travel does favor casual players but let's not get into this here)

They could rig it so you give up a dragon soul when you die in place of your own...but meh, I get into things pretty easily. I'm sure I'll get scared out of my mind a few times no matter how they do things.

Since it has fast travel, it will become farmville? And only hardcoe gamers LIKE losing all their stuff?

There's no way they can really penalise death, since you can just reload the game if you die. Unless they introduce save checkpoints, which I would hope they would never do.

The penalty for death is having to redo everything since your last save. That is enough for me thank you.

Face it: movement in an open world game determines whether you will spend 30 seconds or 30 minutes getting to where you need to be. If this isn't the first thing that will catch both a hardcoe and casual player's attention then there isn't much traveling going on...and that doesn't sound very TES to me. I never said that hardcoe players like losing their stuff... If we have "a", "b" and "c" and "a"="b" "b" does not automatically ="c". When Hitler decided to kill all Jews did he automatically decide to save all Muslims? What is up with this love for jumping to flamewar inciting conclusions at the first opportunity?
