Lifting objects with your hands

Post » Thu Feb 03, 2011 6:04 am

If the feature is in Skyrim are you actually going to use your hands? You could lift objects in Oblivion but when you went into 3rd person view you saw your character just staring at a floating cup, suspending in midair WITH HIS MIIIND! I think your character should physically hold and object with his hand instead of making it float, and when holding onto an object be able to use the attack button to throw the object. A possible application for this would be if you're playing as a stealth character you could pick up and object and throw it to distract an enemy turning him away from you allowing you to sneak right past them or take them out silently. Or if you want to be a dike and just throw cups at people, possibly making them attack you leaving you only with the option to defend yourself, much like taunting someone to attacking you in morrowind.

just thought of a perk for it: "Fastball" when throwing objects they do a slight amount of damage and have a chance to knock down the target :P

If they could do it right, then hell yes. Sounds like it would be hard to do though

It is rather odd that the objects you grab just float in mid-air in front of you. Though I think the rason for this is because given the large amount of different types of objects you could grab in the game, you'd need a "one size fits all" animation, which would likely cause clipping or other problems with certain objects, still, I'd say that your hand clipping through the object your holding looks more natural than the object your holding being telekinetically suspended in front of you, so I'd still say we could have it regardless.

Yeah, getting hand & arm animations that would look right with any object / angle / etc, would be quite a trick. I care more about being able to position and place objects well, than whether or not I can see a hand holding it.

not really, you could throw things in half life 2, but it was also using mind powers.

It would be nice, tought personally i dont mind that much, i play more on a FP perspective, but i would like to see something like what was done in crysis, that you can see the object you are grabing inside your hand (Thus giving a real feel to the throw part if added), but once again, if not added i would mind, i just would like them to keep the ability to move most objects :D

Crysis did it, although Skyrim probably has a lot more objects to pick up than Crysis. That's actually where I got the idea, even if it's completely worthless in that game to pick stuff up unless you're trying to get the achievement to kill 10 enemies with thrown objects.

While I certainly think actually seeing your player character grabbing items with his or her hands is ideal—as opposed to the item just floating there—as others have already stated, if you think about everything that would actually entail, hand grabbing would be quite a difficult thing to implement. Think about the unique shape, wheight, and design of every item in the game, and how a hand must uniquely interact with each of those items to grab it. For example, you don't grab a sword the same way you grab a sheet of paper or a helmet. Now think about the amount of scripting that would have to go into how the player's character should grab each object. I'm not saying it's impossible, but it might be too much work to justify putting in this iteration of Elder Scrolls.

I really like the idea, I just wonder if clipping issues might kill it for now

I am sure something like this was mentioned before, and someone linked a video of another game that already does this, so it's feasible but it's not a major issue for me. Preferably yes but overall doesn't bother me.

if you used grab, sure, if you used the gravity gun ^^... science power.

If they could do it like the older Splinter Cell games I say yes it would be superb.

I dont think being a dike is confirmed in skyrim, i'd rather be an orc.

I never liked the floating stuff at oblivion too, i think morrowind done it well, u could just place something on the map close to you and poof it was there when you wanted it. no need for anyhting to float or being held for real. too much animation work.

Trespasser did http://youtu.be/rW-7uatehx4 in 1997. I'm pretty sure it can't be that hard to make it possible to stick out your hand when you're unarmed and grab something. Just saying...

Skip the intro and just watch what you can do with your hand. You can also throw objects incredibly well. And swing objects manually like baseball bats and sledgehammers.

Anyway, it's just an example, but if they even implement something like Chronicles of Riddike's body dragging, I'd be happy.

I mean, unless I'm playing Luke Skyrimmer(props to the member), I shouldn't be sitting down to a table and making food and cups of mead float to me by staring hard at them.

I never minded how the items you were holding just floated.

If it could be implemented well, I'm up for it though. But you guys should remember the amount of movable objects in TES. Would be a bit of work, hm?

Havok Behavior makes it possible to do this, but I'm not sure if Bethesda will take advantage of it.

They'd have to change the hand/arm positions for each object, so it'd take some time i guess. And the animations would be weird for some things xD but it could be cool

Strikes me as nearly impossible.

Maybe somebody could make a tech demo where all you did was use onscreen hands to lift and manipulate objects in space - lots of animation and some of that 'natural motion' middleware tech maybe... But I don't think you will see anything like this that isn't just canned animation this generation (or more).

It would/will be cool to see it done dynamically, but it seems like a monumental challenge.

i like this idea, it kind of reminds me of the epic splinter cell stealth (before conviction)

Like I said, I'm not interested in throwing stuff... I'm interested in placing stuff decoratively.

Which means picking things up by different corners, moving them around in my "grip" to get the lined up the right way, putting them down so they're balanced, etc.

Yeah, objects in the previous games just "floated" there. But that's kind of necessary for the objects to be..... "free moving"? In other words, I'm trying to stand a book up. I grab by an edge, and then it dangles downwards with gravity. I want to place it facing, so I bump it against the table edge to rotate it, etc, etc, etc.

Now, try to picture hand animations to go with that. You'd need a whole set of reactive animations, so that the hand grip and arm position could constantly shift as you reposition the object.

See the problem? I'm not looking for a basic "grip! Now.... THROW!" animation. I'd need animations for grabbing odd shaped objects at different spots, animations for shifting the objects angle in my hand, and so on.

Personally, I think having no visible hand is less distracting than having a hand held out at one angle, while the constantly-shifting item you're holding clips all over it.

Too much animation would be required unless they invented a technology where the hand joints would try to close into a fist until it detected a collision field.
But I'd love to see it.
