Light armor weight less, therefore you will sneak with less sound. Id go for light armor, except from that, you could sneak around in heavy armor with you horse on the back. Its a choice you gotta decide for yourself.

The Dark Brotherhood and Thief's Guild armors are both Light Armor, so you'll want that.

Besides, who ever heard of a sneaky assassin (this is also how you spell it properly) wearing heavy plate armor anyways? :P

or no armor. If your goal is to kill before seen, having armor on will be irrelevant, plus you'll likely not be getting hit very often and leveling your armor skill will be difficult. Apart from paying trainers or force training it. However it could be something nice to fall back on if you choose to get up and close once and a while.

Well, there is one NPC that is an assassin with heavy armor and 2h mace in the game series, play them all to discover this shocking fact. ;)

a tip: hes living in Cyrodiil.

As some players says here, cloth can help you even further to be sneaky, but light leather is probably good enough for the job.
