I'd like to see some treasure-hunting quests!

Hey everybody! I'd like to start by saying that I've been snooping around these forums for a while now, and after seeing that people kept threads on-topic and made very constructive posts, I felt like I just had to join!

Anyway, onto the topic. I think that most would agree that finding loot is one of the funnest things to do on Oblivion. However, it was always a "Go into X fort/dungeon/mine and keep looking until you get all the loot".

What I'm looking for is a VERY in depth treasure-hunting quest, or hopefully multiple ones! Now, you wouldn't be forced to do it, obviously, and no one would come up to you and say "Hey, go find this treasure". What my idea is, is that there is a famous, lost treasure that no one has been able to find for over a thousand years, or however long seems fitting. Then, you could be walking around and you'd overhear travelers/civilians talking about said treasure. Seeing as nobody has found it yet, that would leave one to believe that no one has unearthed any clues yet.

This is where it gets fun. This wouldn't be your usual quest where, if you try to do it, you're pretty much guaranteed to do it. This quest should make the treasure SO hard to find, that most gamers wouldn't be able to find it, or at least, it would take them a very long time to find it. Only the hardcoe fans would put in the work necessary to unearth all the clues, put them all together, and then figure it all out. Also, the main thing I'm thinking of is that the game would NOT give you any help in figuring it out. The clues could be correlated to Tamrielic lore, where as they are basically very vague clues that don't make much sense. This is where the player comes in! You'd have to actually try to figure out what each clue means, and the game would not give you any further help on the matter. Let's say you found around four clues; Usually, at this point, the game is telling you where to go. Like in Oblivion: "X NPC told me this, and Y NPC told me this, so I should go here". No, I don't want the game to give you any help at all. That way, you would really feel a sense of great accomplishment when/if you figure everything out and find the treasure.

To put it easier, I want a treasure quest, or quests, that are similar to the movie "National Treasure". "The secret lies with Charlette" is a perfect example of a very vague clue that correlates to a certain history/lore. Only the devoted few would be able to figure it out, and it would be a heck of a lot of fun. Plus, finding the most famous lost treasure in the history of Nirn would gain you considerable fame and wealth, and your name would be remembered for something other than the main quest!

Sorry for the wall of text, but I've been dying to see something like this in ANY game, a mission where you, the player, have to do ALL the work, and there is a good possibility that you may never figure it out (without the help of the internet, of course)! It would put some much needed thrill into any game, so why not TES V?!

And here's where you shot yourself square in the foot. Apparently the idea that it should take anything more than following the Magic GPS Quest Arrow to find a quest objective, is anathema.

It was a nice idea though...maybe some kind modder will put it into the PC version.

Well that's what I'm saying though, make it so the game doesn't give you ANY alerts. It wouldn't so much be a "quest" as it would be a freelance mission. No GPS arrow, none of the quest alerts, just you and your wit, going out to try and accomplish a daunting task.

This however, leads to an entire new point, well actually two.
1. Get rid of the GPS arrow. Make us actually pay attention and do some work on our own to get ahead. I hated getting your quest, and then "Oh, I'll just fast travel straight there and start it immediately". I know people complain about how MW did it, but it's still better than the game spoon-feeding you everything.

2. Allow us to actually WRITE in our journal! Add a tab in the journal menu that lets you input text, and have it configured kind of like an outline. That way you could put your main points, and then make a sub-text beneath it adding more information, and then possibly even being able to make subtexts to each subtext you make, and making multiple subtexts.

Example:

I. Lost Treasure of Tamriel
1. I found a clue in X location that stated (insert clue text here).
a. This could mean (insert your interpretation of that clue).
b. I should check (insert location) to search for more information.
2. Etc.
II. Etc.

Get my point? Sorry, I'm trying to be as thorough as possible.

Edit: On my example, "1" is the first subtext to "I", "a" and "b" are the subtexts to "1", and "2" is the second subtext to "I", with "II" being a new main point. My indentation didn't get displayed when I made the post, so it made it a lot more confusing to read.

I want some "Book Based" quests.

I mean, you take a random book and decide to read it, and in that book you might read some info that would let you some actions and reach a conclusion and reward, all of those without starting an actual quest with target markers and the lot.

I.e., you just followed the lines in the quest and tried to perform them, for instance:

  • The book might be a diary of some sort, that described how the writer found a well hidden cave in a mountain range, and how he entered that cave and his day to day adventures in that cavern complex, and how he survived the pitfalls, in there, and how he found the treasure map, and how he found a way to decipher the puzzles in that map, and how he followed the instructions on that map, and gathered clues around the cavern complex, trying to find the way out, while fighting the local monsters, and his final mistake as he found his way out, and how he does not hope to survive his near doom; and the final add-on of the one who found the diary near the entrance, and why he did not try to follow the authors instructions, and instead of that, sold the diary to a passing merchant.
  • The book might be an explanation of some coded notes that one could find scattered around the world, so that in future you could be able to crack their mystery, and know what are they, and maybe find some treasures because of that.
  • A scroll inside a bottle found beside a river bank, as a plea for help from a prisoner in a known castle beside the river, up in the mountains, and how and why she was captured and held in that castle. I think this one would result in an actual quest line.
  • An actual map on a deer skin parchment, with rough detail and estimations, and an "X marks the spot" note in the end.
  • There can be several such maps around the world, for pirate loot, and the like, each with it's unique flavor, or even better a treasure map generator, that makes such maps on the fly, and hides them in a nearby inventory loot, and places the final treasure in the destination, on the fly, waiting to be found. And you might need a shovel to dig it out, like in Fallout NV.
  • A notebook of a former prisoner in a well guarded castle, and describing how he found/dug his way out of the castle, and how it is possible to return back inside the castle, and where to find valuable loot in that castle, and how he wants to return there as soon as he raises from the sick bed. You know the rest.
  • The notes of a legendary merchant that knew exactly what merchandise sell better in what towns or villages, and the tricks to find out what to purchase and were to sell it for better prices.
  • The traveling notes of a long dead pilgrim and his little gems of knowledge about tricks he learned in different places, and how those tricks helped him in their local situations, and his rewards in those situations.
  • You name it...
