I'm just wondering on the likelihood of being able to like posts on the forum in the future. I know Bioware has an option to like posts-I'd like it if something similar could be done for this forum in the future.

I certainly hope not, people would be likewhoring all over the place.

Once you have options like that some people will do anything in order to get likes. I just don't see anything positive aspects of adding such a feature.

Other forums also allow you to post images and videos, in a way I'm glad this one doesn't makes it seem clean and orderly. But that's another topic.

This forum won't get any updates. We're being moved to Bethesda.net soonish. The new forum supposedly has "some really cool features", whatever they may be, so who knows.

Man I am so late to this news. Do we get to keep our profiles? Or is it something we all have to sign up for?

edit: Actually, http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1528524-bethesdanet-is-now-live-new-forums-coming-soon/ the forum thread. But it's only wishes and speculations.

Oh I hope this never happens. We had this in the Lord of the Rings Online forums and it was a huge popularity contest. I absolutely hated it and was so happy when it was done away with.

The ESO forums have 3 options: insightful, agree and awesome...none of which seem to create a popularity contest. They also allow image posting yet you never see threads flooded with images (except for a screenshot thread) and nobody has an image in their signature. I think the fear of these features stems from forums where people abuse them but they can work well enough with the right forum and I have faith in the good people here.

Heed this lesson well, Bethesda. When a forum courts shallow like posters, https://youtu.be/x4Rqkvl0AtE?t=247.

It will likely work on the first day, maybe a 50% chance on working the second day.

Yeah we had it over in Allakhazam.com and it was highly irritating. If you happened to make a few dumb posts early on and got rated down, after that it didn't matter how good of posts you made, your posts would be downvoted into oblivion every single time you posted. And of course, the guys who were "popular" in-game always got their posts "liked" to the heavens. It was quite ridiculous ><

This should be a poll. Someone make a poll on whether or not this should be a poll. Like if you don't eat babies.

I wanted to add to my post that the LOTRO forums also allow pictures, and a lot of them are nothing more than motivational posters designed to insult people. If you don't believe me just go there(I'm on my phone and can't link), look in the suggestion sub forum and look in the elf captain and elf dentist threads.

Seriously, I like our forum setup just the way it is.

They could make the likes only visible to the creator of the comment I guess.

You still get the warm feeling of someone appreciating your post without turning it into a competition.

Or just a dislike button, that would be good too.

At the risk of courting death-(I like to live dangerously):

I'd like to think that a liked posts feature would lead to more quality posts by the members of the forum. There's obviously a risk of people making posts just so they can get their posts liked, but I don't think it would be that much of a detriment to the feature.

It's just that there have been times there have been really good posts on the forums and it seems like there's nothing on the forum to allow you to show your appreciation for making such a post. If there's another alternative to liked posts that would allow you to show appreciations for good posts, I'd be open to other alternatives.

The problem here is that "popularity" does not equal "quality." This may not be a politically-correct thing to say nowadays, but quality is not democratic.

I've been expressing my appreciation here for 13 years. But I do it using words. I will write things like, "That was a really well-written post," or "I agree with everything you just said," or " That's a great point. I hadn't considered it before," and so on.

I honestly don't see how a "like" button could be an improvement over articulating how we feel with language.

Yea... no thanks. I am in the "Please do not" camp, too :)

"Like Buttons" are bad, all around. The few times they would be nice are far behind the abuses inherent in this "Facebook Feature."

I like this forums simplicity and cleanliness. Let's keep it that way :)

Honestly, there's no point so long as there's no forum rule against a reply with a simple "thanks!" or "cool!". Most forums with likes generally forbid frivolous posts like that because the like feature serves the same purpose. So as long as thanking posts are allowed, there's no point in a like feature.

Votes aren't really good for discussion. It's much better to say why or why not you agree you with a post than to up/downvote it. Especially in the case of downvotes. It's extremely baffling when you think you've made a perfectly sound point or joke and it gets a million downvotes and you have no idea why. If people actually reply with their criticisms then different views can be explored. Votes discourage that.

Edit - Re-reading the OP, I see you're only talking about likes. So my whole post is irrelevant. -__- Not sure if I have any immediate thoughts for or against likes besides what's already been said.

As long as threads here get locekd at 200 posts, not needing such posts would serve a purpose.

You talk about improved quality and give Bioware forums as an example?

I don't mind Likes, but I've yet to see a forum where they improved quality or had any sort of positive effect other than making people feel warm and fuzzy when their post is Liked by a large group of people. Which is nice, absolutely, but it's not the only way to show appreciation, as Pseron explained. I think I enjoy verbal reactions more. Click-and-forget doesn't carry quite the same weight as people taking time to actually talk to you. That said, I see the value of Likes in particularly popular and insightful opening posts where they could save the thread from a flood of one-line agrees. But I don't think it's ever been a major problem here?

Yeah, that feature would only turn friends into enemies. I hope it doesn麓t get to that.
