Limited Dragons? Huh?

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 8:53 am

I remember reading there is only 20 or so Dragons in-game..
When we kill the Dragons, will that be all to fight? or will there be Dragon Hatchlings which are the size of around... A normal cottage?
I think killing Dragons sound fun and challengable, but would they be limited to only 20 or so? Because I want Dragons in, for a long time :P

no there are 20 dragonshouts each consisting of 3 words, and you kill dragons to get the words, so there is probably around 60, but you can also get words from other places like people and carvings

Eh. Dragons are a fantasy cliche, I don't want them being a staple of the series. It's totally cool that they're involved, but I like the idea of there not being an infinite number of them. Dragons being relatively rare makes them feel like a real threat. If dragons were cliff racers, no one would care, but limiting the amount of dragons builds them up as something special.

I think you may have misheard. Listen to the new Q and A podcast with Todd, he indicates we'll be fighting many throughout the game.
In one encounter he mentioned there's three at once!

There are actually 60 dragons. I would imagine some of those are actual baby dragons. My bet is on killing a hatchling early in the game for the main quest.

No, there are 20 dragon shouts, not dragons. Killing dragons is tied in some way to getting new shouts, but I'm fairly confident there are more than 20 of them.

Is there anywhere that it says specifically there are 60 dragons? Sure, 20 shouts, 3 words per shout, one word per dragon, but who's to say you don't reuse several of the words or use the same words in different combinations? I might have just missed the news where they confirmed a total of 60 though.

I think there will be more than 60 dragons...you don't get all the shouts from dragons i believe.
Also tod said there are different types of dragons,so not all will give you dragon shouts ,by the sound of it.

Where are you all reading information regarding the amount of dragons in the game? I've read every scrap of info about Skyrim that I can find and I found no mention of a set amount of dragons in Skyrim.

I hope random encounters allow dragons to fight each other if they come across the same place at the same time

I think there might be "lesser" and "greater" dragons. The lesser ones being a different kind, or babies, that are more commonly seen in the game world. The greater dragons would be the ones that give you the shouts.

There are fire dragons, ice dragons, dragons that control time, things like that. I think that's what he meant by different, I'd imagine all of them give you dragon words.

There are 20 shouts of 3 words each, some you get from Dragon souls, some from reading ancient wall carvings.

I don't see where you guys are making the connection that the number of shouts in game denotes the amount of dragons. I think that either every dragon wont give you a word, or some dragons or dragon "types" give the same word, meaning there are quite a few dragons.

There is so much misinformation floating around in this thread. As far as I know, no where has it been said how many dragons there are going to be. People have just made up numbers out of thin air based on what they have misinterpreted.

No, nobody has ever said anything about dragons that breathe ice or control time. There are dragon shouts that control time, but nothing said of actual dragons. As others said, I am not sure why everyone seems sure that dragonshouts = dragons.

It's in one of the Todd Howard interviews. He says there are dragons that speak this dragon language that can control time.

I had hoped to not have many dragons.
...and each would be very difficult to defeat, having my ass handed to me most of the time.

While I know dragon souls are used in some fashion to get new shouts, I don't recall anything about getting the actual words from them; I thought all the words came from murals (and maybe some trainers).

The dragons use dragon shouts. Todd mentioned that dragons don't "breathe fire", they use a dragon shout that shoots fire. There's also shouts for slowing time and knocking people away (one of the GI's videos shows artwork of a dragon using the push shout). How that relates to the player's ability to use dragon shouts, we don't exactly know.

We know that upon defeating a dragon you somehow get it's soul and thus can use a new shout connected with that soul. So if you defeat a fire shouting dragon you now get access to the shout connected with fire.

Even if there's 60 dragons you need to kill to get ALL the shouts, doesn't limit the number to 60 dragons total.

Take Swarley's look at it: There's a lot of Oblivion Gates in Oblivion, but only a handful of them are necessary... :)

I hope there aren't too many dragons... Otherwise fighting them goes from "AWESOME!" to "Yet another dragon? Jump on my sword and save us both time :snoring: "

And of course there are dragons that control time! The Dragon God is the God of Time! (And thanks to the theory of relativity, everything else as well)
