Limited Fast-Travel: Thoughts and Ideas

Post » Tue Mar 22, 2016 10:58 am

Fast-Travel, love it or hate it, it's in the game. We're not here to argue if there should be no fast-travel, or fast-travel shouldn't be changed. There are threads for that and we've all read them by now.

Some people want no fast-travel, others don't want it to change at all. But what about something in-between?

How would YOU design a Limited Fast-Travel system for Fallout 4?

Think about this as though someone was going to use your comments here to design a mod.

Here's one I'll throw out to get this thread started. It's not perfect but lets talk about it.

Fast-Travel only to claimed Settlements.

  • You can fast-travel, but you can only fast-travel to a settlement that you have claimed the workbench at.

  • Benefits:
    • It will give you a reason to claim settlements.

    • You'd suddenly have a reason to build up and reinforce out of the way settlements like Somerville Place, or Murkwater Construction Site.

  • Other options: You can only fast-travel to a settlement if you are currently standing in another settlement you own, and if both are connected by trade routes.

The best way to restrict it is to use the mechanics that are already provided. The molecular relay and vertibird transports.

There is actually already a mod that does that. It adds the ability to build a motorcycle or vertibird at your settlements that allow you to fast travel to your other settlements.

While I think that the molecular relay option is a bit too close to simply being more of the same sort of "fast-travel anywhere" option, the vertibird transports do have a benefit of at least being more realistic setting-wise.

But what about a more limited fast-travel approach to either?

Maybe a delay timer on the Molecular Relay so you can only use it ever few hours (in-game).

Or how about a limit on the vertibird where it will not drop you into a hot zone (anyone with enemies in it) since it's supposed to be an unarmed troop transport?

That's cool. What's that mod called?

And is that an option you'd prefer or would you rather go with something different?

Molecular relay is pretty far along in the story to make for a viable option. Plus it takes a stupid amount of power.

I'd prefer to have it Perk-based:

Local Leader 1: Supply Lines. They'd just have to make it so you can only fast travel between settlements that have a direct trade route.

Local Leader 2: Just add that you can now fast travel to any settlement in the trade network. You can get this at level 14, which is pretty much when your trade routes are expanding anyways.

It also solves the "go attack the raiders on the other side of the map" problem. You can fast travel to the nearest settlement that is part of your network.

Having a motorcycle would actually be pretty cool. It could be the fallout version of the "horse/mount" in skyrim. And because it's loud, it could make your aggro radius extra large.

Not a bad idea. So if I have Sanctuary Hills linked to Red Rocket, and then Red Rocket linked to Greygarden, I'd have to fast travel once from Sanctuary Hills to Red Rocket, Then again from Red Rocket to Greygarden? That might be a bit needlessly repetitive though. But on the other hand, It would really encourage you to build Trade Hubs, and it would change up the optimized trade route path that's become popular (the big circle).

I don't know how I'd feel about linking it to Local Leader though. It makes a TON of sense given what the Perks are meant to represent. But I've always felt a bit iffy about the lvl 2 version being the only route to settlement stores. So it's less an issue with your idea and more an issue I've had with how it's setup now.

I already do this; so I see no need for the Devs or Modders to do anything. I only fast travel to or from my settlements or major cities (Goodneighbor and Diamond City). I just RP that I hooked up with one of my provisioners and I rode on the the back of brahmin.

I don't see why others that want to fast travel all over the place or those who don't want to fast travel at all can't work within the current system.

There is no need to change it. People have a choice of how to use it, if it all. The current way is probably the best solution. Fast travel every where if you want to, or don't use it at all, or do a bit of both. The choice is yours.

I use fast travel, but not all that much. Depends on how I'm playing that day.

If I'm having a gaming sesh I'll be walking a lot more and taking in everything around me, going off exploring that new marker that has appeared on my HUD. If I'm just dipping in for an hour or so, I'll use fast travel and knock out a couple of radiants or do some settlement stuff.

That is the beauty of single player games, there is no wrong way to play them.

Because some people would like mods to change the experience and force a specific gameplay style. That's what they're there for. And we're not demanding anything here or pushing for a mod. We're only talking about gameplay changing concepts we'd like to see. What you mention there, about doing it yourself and playing it yourself is exactly the kind of thing we're talking about. ^_^

So have you had any issues running this system from a purely RP side? Looking at the game, it does seem like there might be points where the game forces us to use fast travel or to rely on it. I'm kinda curious just how often you've run into that sort of situation.

Once again (not at you, but to the thread as a whole) we are not judging your play style if you don't want to restrict fast-travel at all. We are also not suggesting in any way whatsoever that you should be forced to play this way.

So what's your alternative limited fast-travel concept?

i wouldn't restrict it in any way... not for myself.

with 700 hours in, exploring isn't that exciting anymore, since you've seen everything.

The mod is called Immersive Fast Travel and I currently use it as my only form of fast travel. There is even an option that requires you to have gas to operate the motorcycle.

There is no need for a limited fast travel concept. That is for the player to implement themselves if they so wish.

Yes. There's no NEED for it. But there might be a WANT.

And it's up for people who want it to either create a mod that does it or use it if someone else makes it.

That's the point of this thread. To discuss and share how it might be implemented.

it's part of the new survival mode and we will have to wait and see if it's a new mode or replacing the current one.
