My little boys

Post » Wed May 30, 2012 10:50 pm

I let my 7 and 6 year old boys play Oblivion and they love it. They have strict rules that they are not allwed to kill or fight anyone. They can steal stuff but only to buy houses and if they get caught, they have to go to jail. They absolutely love and have at least 3 or 4 chars each. They are trying to buy the Anvil House and when they got it and found out it was haunted they were so mad. They wanted to email Todd Howard and tell him to make the houses free. So I did just that. I went on Bethesda's website and contacted them by email. Here is what they wanted me to write:

"Hi Mr. Howard,
Our names our Logan and Joey Ryan. We are 7 and 6 years old. Our Daddy loves The Elder Scrolls and is playing Skyrim all the time. He lets us play Oblivion but we are not allowed to kill anyone. We make a lot of characters and have so much fun in the cities and the castles. We go around trying to make money enough to buy houses. They are very expensive and we want you to try and make them free. We want the hous ein Anvil to be free too. It's unfair that there are ghosts in there and the guy who sold it to us never told us. That was mean. You make great games and we can't wait for the next one so or Daddy will let us finally play Skyrim.
your friends,
Logan and Joey Ryan
From Maryland"

I hope Bethesda writes back to them just for fun.

Glad to see your passing the elder scrolls series down to your children. If Bethesda did write back that would be pretty cool to show your kids

As a father that is beyond adorable. my son(10) wants to play but has gotten into alittle trouble so as of late he isnt aloud and my 2 daughter (5 and 7) love to tell me here to go and what to do. i am alittle worried though that they keep wanting me to go for the "1000 bounty in all 9 holds" achievement, even though ive explained that that would mean daddy has to kill lots of innocent peiple. There faces go all sad then they get this very evil grin and say "do it daddy do it". Cheers to you my freind for letting your children experiance the joy of these types of games.

I let my 5 year old nephew kill all he wanted when I let him play Morrowind. He already was playing Prototype with the volume muted, so not like he already would have been accused of becoming a born killer. Okay, he probably won't and I hope not. I just let him get his anger out in a healthy way.

It will be cool if Bethesda does answer the e-mail.

We have a similar group here run at the university but they use real home made weapons and armor, but the foam stuff is just like what I got em here's the selection in nerf http://www.amazon.com/s?ie=UTF8&keywords=Nerf%20Swords%20And%20Axes%20And%20Shields&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3ANerf%20Swords%20And%20Axes%20And%20Shields&page=1 they each have a great sword, one handed sword and a shield each, and a foam Thor hammer each. Every day the wife plays Caesar and determines weather or not I die or they die ( but seeing how it's two against one they always win  )

Plenty of serial killers around before video games were ever invented..

That said I don't think it's healthy for kids to be exposed to that kind of violence from a young age, I was and I turned out a complete wackjob..
Do you use mods to stop them killing or something ? How do you enforce that ?

The gore in Oblivion was nothing compared to whats in Skyrim, and as long as they know it's a game and more like cartoon violence then their fine. Ben 10, Bugs bunny, etc...etc... are just as bad if not worse then Oblivion, hell even Sponge Bob square pants has some moments that make me go Hmmmm. And as far as enforcing I assume OP just keeps an eye on them as they play, a parental presence is usually enough to deter straying from the rules.

He didn't ask for parenting advice. Nothing is wrong with letting kids play video games. Skyrim violence is not bad at all compared to some other games. GTA, Dead island. Etc. kids will not grow up to be psychos just because they played violent games

It's more to do with the fact people look so much more realistic in Oblivion (well you know what I mean), it's almost as if you're physically killing a human, if you're immersed enough. Also the corpses are lying there and can be moved around and messed with. It is a pretty mature game, but as long as kids aren't allowed to fight or kill I suppose it's perfectly harmless. How do they travel between cities btw ?

My two year old sits on my lap and watches me play Skyrim. She giggles at the goats, bunnies, foxes, wolves, bears and horses as I run around the landscape. She even laughs when I get attacked by the animals which I tell her is mean.

She made me chase a goat up a mountain once, she got mad at me when I tried to leave it.

Fast travelling should allow them to avoid any minotaurs. Also if they aren't levelling up (hard to do without combat) then they would rarely encounter Minotaurs even if they were out in the wilderness.
