It's a little insulting to compare Synths to Slaves

Post » Sat Jan 16, 2016 5:03 am

Synths are machines built to serve, with a home and a purpose.

Humans are kidnapped, abused, dehumanized, and sold to other people.

Comparing the two is an insult to people who have been affected by slavery.

Synths are treated relatively well, compared to slaves in FO3. It's clean and safe in the Institute, and people recognize they have human needs. On the surface, the Railroad would die to protect synths. But they don't do a thing for human slaves.

Oh? If a Synth escapes because it yearns for freedom and feels like slave, how is that any different from a human feeling the same thing? After all they are like us. They bleed, they talk, they feel, they emphatize. There are a few NPC's in game that i learned later on was actually Synths, but i couldn't tell the first time i met them. To me they were humans.

Some Synths may be sentiant.

If someone has a baby for the purpose of making said baby a slave... does that mean it isn't?

>Comparing thinking feeling creatures getting forced to do things they dont want to do is insulting to thinking feeling creatures who were forced to do stuff they didn't want to do.

Uh huh.

Also, you are aware that humans are biological machines, as are Gen 3 synths, who are wholly biological expect the control chip planet in their brain.

I see Synths as walking, talking sixbots. :hehe:

Anyway, question-

Spoiler
Is it true that the Patriot guy is actually programming synths into believing they have freewill? I remember reading that on here once, but none commented on it

Synths are machines. I find it funny that even the Rail Road simply reprograms some synths.

Humans are people. You can't just build one with a fancy machine and give it the personality and memories you wish.

In theory you could, though such a technology is very far off.

That depends on whether or not you consider synths to be sentient. I'm on the fence as far as that topic is concerned. I don't think enough is known about them to really draw solid conclusions on either side of the question.

I'm not entirely convinced that this is true. Humans ARE machines. They're biological machines, yes, but so are Gen III synths. We don't have the technology to build a human from scratch, but in principle it's absolutely possible.

That want to be free to chose for themselves and live their own lives as they see fit. If the machine you create has to be advanced enough to have those feelings in order to meet your needs then at best your crazy and at worse your an amoral, sadistic monster.

Edit.

I don't know if Synths are "human" or not but they sure aren't JUST machines.

There are a lot of things OP should watch, read, and think about.

There are reasons why moral philosophy is a four-year degree program, and it's not because it's easy to get jobs in the field. It's because there's a lot of material to think about and legitimate open questions that are hard.

When people are like, "hey, this guy is bad at calculus!" no one argues. But nobody ever points out that, for the same reasons and in the same way, most of us are bad at moral philosophy.

When someone shouts, "the integral of 3x^2 is -19! It's obvious!" no one takes 'em seriously. But when someone shouts, "artificial intelligence is built to serve! It's obvious!" everyone thinks it's worth discussing.

So weird.

If one cared to nitpick about everything in a game, we wouldn't be playing games. Context matters, you know.....

It's a fictional universe, and if the writers write their fictional races as being living beings deserving of rights then that's what they are in the context of that universe. That a life form is synthetic rather then being say, a mythological creature like an elf, shouldn't change much if these fictional beings are endowed with sentience by their creator/writers.

It certainly shouldn't be 'insulting'. Have to take fictional universes as presented.

and this is also the major point ^^

almost everything that we are and that we feel and that we can do, gets explained by science

the only difference to the synths, as they are in game, is that they may be not as old as a real human, so they're basically just children?!

Even if you could. That human is a unique person. You would be wiping out a unique person's identity and replace it with one you created. A Synth is a machine that is easily copied and any memories or personality you replace were never its to being with.

Basically Synth to me are like the Lucy Liu robots from that Futurama Episode.

As a physicist, I'm obligated to point out that the integral of 3x2=x3+c

You know, back in the days when slavery was on the decline in America, there was a lot of rhetoric and even pseudoscience going around meant to convince people that Africans were subhuman or, uh, more suited to physical labor than work of the mind. A lot of this thought still persists today, unfortunately. So I guess, be mindful of who you call "subhuman".

Except the moment the synth is active, and starts seeing, hearing, smelling, and overall thinking for itself, it would stop being pre-programmed, and start being its own thing.

Even twins who live together for most of their lives, doing everything together, develop wildly different personalities and thoughts.

You could give two synths the exact same memories ranging from [censored] to the age of 30, and within a year they very easily could spawn totally divergent and individual people.
