A little late to the party

Post » Mon Feb 01, 2016 9:14 am

I bought the Elder Scrolls anthology edition a couple of years ago (I think?). Tried to play the earlier incarnations but found the graphics a little too 'old school' for my liking so started up Oblivion, did a couple of quests and got sidetracked by something...

Fast forward to the beginning of this week and I decide to start afresh.

So Kira, the Wood Elf Assassin, is born.

To be honest I'm quite surprised that there are active forums, but I'm glad there are :)

I'll try not to bombard people with too many questions, I've already found the wiki to be useful, but I'm not aiming to rely on it...life is meant to be an adventure without a handbook afterall ;)

Kira went through her first Oblivion gate at Kvatch last night, when I get home in a bit she'll hopefully find her way out again. She's already lost the horse she got from Weynon priory (after riding through a bunch of camps and being hounded by wolves) so she's back on foot.

Kira has joined the Fighters guild and is about to start on getting her recommendations for the Mages guild.

Cyrodil is pretty, so she shouldn't mind the walk back to where-ever, picking flowers as she goes :)

Welcome to the forums! When you say "lost the horse" do you mean the horse died, or that you just cannot find it. In Oblivion, horses have a tendency to get lost pretty easily, since there is no horse whistle option.

There is a little trick to finding lost horses. Just fast travel someplace and the horse should appear with you. What I typically do to recover lost horses is, after looking and not finding the horse, I fast travel to the nearest location on my map, often very closeby to where I am standing, and the horse will appear. I RP it that I waited a while and the horse calmed down and came back.

Dangit. Kingofscruff beat me to it. What am I gonna do with all these Fishysticks, my freezer is half-clogged with them. :ahhh:

Glad to hear you are enjoying Oblivion; this was my first Elder Scrolls game, which I discovered back in 2008. If I were you I wouldn't look at wiki sites too much. Ruins the surprises. Up to you though, of course. You seem to already know this though, from what I'm reading.

Since you're on PC, you have the Anthology after all, there is a way to find your Weynon Priory horse if you'd like to, or you can use a console command to teleport that horse to wherever your character is. You can then roleplay (pretend) the horse heard Kira's call, perhaps. Just go http://uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Console_Commands to learn how. Or, if you prefer some mystery, just keep playing as-is, that works too. I gamed on PS3 (no console commands or mods) for 5 solid years, mm hmm, and I was just fine with that.

edit: Turija's option works too. I never fast-traveled back when I was gaming on PS3 though, so I didn't know about this option.

Indeed, I did Renee! How about we have them with some chips (fries for you Americans)

I think you should defiantly give the older ones ago, even if you have to watch videos on it to see how to get into it.

For Arena: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLkC0UZZ2P4J_ZC7EbLYS54gvj2u7LsyGL

After Arena, I will be doing a Daggerfall playthrough, but search for videos on Youtube for an idea/

For Morrowind: Same as Daggerfall, but I'm sure a lot of people will be able to help you get into that one, it just takes practice / patience and nerves

Yes, still surprisingly active here. Just not a lot of new things to talk about. Feel free to ask anything and comment about everything.

I hope you find your horse (unless of course it has shuffled off this mortal coil and joined the choir invisible). Once you have enough funds, you can buy a new horse if you so choose. I think a similar paint horse runs about 500 septims at Bruma or Leyawiin. Or you can save up for one of the faster horses with a bit more health, or just do without. They are handy but not necessary.

Mmm, chips. Green chips.

The older games can be difficult for some people for sure, especially the First-person-only perspective. It took a while for me to get used to this. I enjoyTES 1: Arena, but another issue for me is after maybe an hour, sometimes less, I start feeling a little headache-y sometimes, perhaps because my middle-aged eyes are now much more used to seeing smoother graphics.

Hope you're enjoying TES4 though, T14003. Sounds like you are. TES1 is definitely more 'hardcoe'. I mostly began playing it because I wanted to see how the series began.

1) Don't eat the green chips. They are not healthy! :goodjob:

2) Maybe it is your eyes; maybe it's the old 2D graphics;

3) I think that Arena is Dark Souls without the skill. It is hardcoe (imagine doing DiD on it)

Have fun!

It doesn't matter when you came to the party, TI3004. All that matters is that you are here now. :)

About the forums still being active: I think this is due to mods. Modding keeps the games alive. It's no accident that the moddable games have their own forums while the non-moddable games are all squeezed into a "Past Games Discussion" forum.

I knew someone was going to bring this up. Okay, what I'm talking about is the editor. When Bethesda released the Construction Sets/GECK/Creation Kit it gave birth to vibrant modding communities for those games, modding communities that did not coalesce around the earlier games in the series. I am proposing, Mister Nit-Picky, that it is these modding communities that have kept Morrowind alive fourteen years after release, Oblivion alive ten years after release and Skyrim alive four years after release, and is why, to answer the OP, this forum is still active.

Does this expanded version of my post satisfy you? ;)

I guess everyone does.

TI3004, you may find yourself getting 'high-strung' in some stiuations in TES, but it's all for a greater cause!

Thanks for the replies :)

I think my horse ran off...I didn't find its corpse anyway, so I'll try the fast travel trick and see if it turns up.

My old eyes just can't cope with the older graphics anymore, even Morrowwind made me shudder...or perhaps my sensibilities have become too refined.

Welcome indeed! :)

Nice to see new gamers enjoying Oblivion! And I see you already got the fishy stick, good :P Yeah, feel free to ask any question but remember it′s much more fun to discover and figuring things out for yourself, so don′t do yourself a disfavor by coming here or the wiki at the first sign of trouble. Unless that trouble is tech-related, then come here as fast as you can!

Enjoy the game! ^_^

fishy stick :) love it

forgot to try and find my horse, got too involved following the main quest for a bit.

I could do with more room for loot! I seem to fill my inventory really quickly, guess I'll have to start getting more picky about what I loot.

I think I'll work on my Mage guild recommendations next, though I understand that Wood Elf Assassins don't focus on Magic.

I did take in some stunning views of Imperial City during my hike up to Cloud Ruler Temple...I'll have to try and remember to take some screenshots, if nothing else I could do with a shot of Kira for my profile pic

Welcome T13004.

One of my very first characters was also a Wood Elf, and I also noticed inventory got full very fast due to the Bosmers starting off with low strength.

Could always learn some basic alchemy to make feather potions to carry more.

But things like heavy Armor and weapons often don't have a good weight to value ratio.

Enjoy your adventures, slightly jealous so many new things for you to discover and experience.

It's worthwhile (though not utterly mandatory) to go ahead and complete the Mage's Guild recommendation quests, even if you stop there and don't go any further in the Mage's Guild questline. That's the only way to get access to the Arcane University, which has a number of useful services not obtainable otherwise (without plug-ins).

As to the burden issues - yes, learn to quickly calculate the value-to-weight ratio of loot, and only take with you those things that you plan to use yourself, or things with a high resale value per "pound." Definitely look into creating Feather potions. They last a rather long time and you can stack them, up to 4 active at one time. If you are a Wood Elf Assassin, Alchemy should be one of your fortes, so potion-making is something to work on.

just seen on another thread that there are lots of mods available...I'm going to keep almost vanilla but add in the portable campsite and an abandoned shack I can use as my secluded home. I can then dump my loot until I come across somewhere to sell it and go on extended trips into the wilds gathering ingredients for potions, poisons and spells :)

Huh? Sorry, what happened? You gotta try some of these green chips man. B) Mellow you right out. How can someone be late to a party when the party never stops? :bonk:

What the [censored] is in these, Kingofscruff? Ne'er mind, don't answer that.

This is a good idea for your first playthrough, not just so you can learn how the vanilla game works, but also so you don't get caught up in mod problems. If you add too much too fast, and all the sudden your game starts having probs, which mod is causing these problems? :brokencomputer: Next thing you know, you're spending hours not playing your game, and not having any fun at all.

Another piece of advice: if you're planning on playing this game for a good, long time, don't try to force your current character to do it all. You can make future characters who are more evil, more pious, more whatever. You'll see. There are multiple ways to approach Bethesda games.

... or you can stick with one character for an X amount of time, that works too, right mirocu? :spotted owl:

Other than doing the mage recommendation quests to get access to the University to help with spells & enchanting, I'm planning on just heading out and exploring and seeing what happens. 'Like a leaf on the wind'
