Little Problems...

Post » Thu Dec 30, 2010 12:16 pm

Hi everyone! Just have a small annoying problem. Ren's Hair is supposed to be shiny right? well, mine used to be, but now it's dull and flat! I have no idea what would cause this to happen. I mean it was shiny yesterday, and today it's blah! Would it have to do with shaders or anything like that? or is it as simple as load order...? Anyway, thanks so much in advance! This little problem is driving me crazy! :banghead:
P.S. Will upload example pics soon.

Did you use OBMM to install these? If so, use the data file browser, and navigate to Ren's hairs to try to figure out which mod installed those files last.

I even tried reinstalling Rens hair, and it's still dull... That's why i think it's some kind of shader or something unrelated to Rens Hair itself...

What mods have you installed that touch shaders? RBP certainly does not. Are you sure that it is not a lighting issue? Did you notice other things lacking luster. If this problem is isolated to one of Ren's hairs. I would look to the hair mods first. Maybe you were using a different version of Ren's hair than you thought. OBMM does not keep very good record of which mod installed particular data files last, so you would have to try reinstalling, one-by-one any mods that contain Ren's hairs. I am using mods with three different versions of some of her hairs. A companion mod or something may have included a shinier version of her hair mesh or something like that.

Yup, definitely dull. Okay...I definitely say it is a hair mesh issue. I wish I could remember if RBP had "dull" Ren's hair, but it has been so long since I have played Obilvion.

Edit: After looking at your screen shots, the shader idea seems out there. Messing with the shaders should affect the way light reflection appears on other objects as well, but her skin looks equally bright in both images. It's too bad you are not using BAIN because switching around which mod overrides and wins the "Ren's hair battle" would be easy. OBMM is a little ambiguous...There is an option to use the 20 shader for hair in the Oblivion INI. Maybe you should check that setting out and try switching it to on or off.

Well, there is the high quality hair shader option to enable disable in the Oblivion.ini file.
There is also the ability to force Shader Model 3.0

Have you made any changes to either?

Some weird shader issues can occur with some video cards when forcing the SM3.0 option

EDIT - Not sure if Spectral Lighting has any effect on hair or not. (If that is even a video option within the Oblivion menu...) Haven;t really messed with it, but it might be worth double checking.

Also, not sure how hair is effected under different high quality lighting like Bloom and HDR. May want to ensure that HDR is turned on within your video options menu as well.

EDIT - I don't have the .ini file in front of me the reference the correct names of the options I mentioned above, but a quick google should reveal what I am trying to say...

I just recommended the hair shader as well, and I am also not sure about the 3.0 video shader either. It is off by default, and I do not recall being impressed when I did try turning it on. I just treat it as another useless INI setting now.

Edit: It is kind of odd that a mod changed that. If that happened while installing an OMOD, you should have been prompted to confirm the change to the Oblivion INI file.

Sorry Tomlong, I missed your comment about the hairshader. My skim reading is getting rusty.

One thing to mention... If you ever used Streamline, it is possible for streamline to make changes to your video settings. I don't know if it would go as far as disabling hair shaders, but I have never used this Streamsmooth option of the mod myself. Keep in mind that even after you remove Streamline, many times it's effects remain until you manually change them.

I can confirm that it does not touch the hair shader or that 3.0 shader. I think we would have heard a lot more people complaining about a lack of luster in that case, haha.

Just checked: all other hair is shiny! (I pretty much have all hairs: Corean, Sarem, Vanilla... the only hair that isn't shiny is the JH hairs, but they never were! :P) it's just rens! so that rules out my shader thought... Just reinstalled Rens meshes and textures... still dull and ugly...

That is the relevant setting. I cannot imagine turning it off would help, haha. Ren's mod may not have been the version of Ren's hair loading last before this change occurred. What other mods have you installed contain Ren's hair meshes? RBP uses them, but I do not think the hair meshes differ. RBP does not include all of Ren's hairs, however. Are you using Ren's mod and RBP? What is your load order, anyway.

(Don't forget about the edit button in the bottom-right corner of your posts, in order to avoid the double posts.)

Edit: I could not see your load order while reply, sorry about that. Anyway, RBP, IDKRRR and (I assume) the Khajiit eye fix all modify the vanilla races. You can probably disable the earlier loading mods of the three because their changes are imported into the bashed patch (if you checked them under Race changes) and RBP is overwriting all of their changes, otherwise. I think I remember IDKRRR having the Ren's hairs...Is that correct? Maybe you should try reinstalling that mod then.

Thanks for the tip! ^_~ anyway, like i said before, using BG balancing's version of Ren's Hair, and My first post contains my super long load order. BG balancing is towards the bottom! and my last esp--Ashley's NPCs--is a variation of BG balancing, i use this for my custom race (the one in my 3 screenies) and i change some NPCs to look better!

I updated my last post. Hopefully, that works

Edit: Oh, that stinks...I cannot imagine this issue being something other than a different Ren's hair mesh, especially after you confirmed only the Ren's hairs are suffering this ailment. Have you tried installing Ren's mod (getting rid of the plugins) just to see if installing her original hairs makes the difference.

Re-install just the normal maps for the hair in your textures/characters/ren/hair folder. I'd try that.

Ack! I was having trouble remember whether or not hairs had normal maps. My mind is so fuzzy... There is still the matter of figuring out which mod has the dull normal maps though. That is why I am suggesting try to install the original Ren's hairs, but you are right about the issue being normal maps, for sure.

Is it possible that you uninstalled another mod that contains Ren's hairs. (Wow, I am sounding redundant right now.)

I did mess around with the argonians yesterday... but i put everything back to the way it was... (i'm not really a mod expert... i know just enough to get myself in trouble... also changed water mods yesterday, and i just put in some new clothes... that's it! that's all i did yesterday--that's the only thing that changed

Occasionally just resetting my BSA timestamps in OBMM has fixed texture issues. Don't ask me why. And if you know why, don't tell me. I'd prefer to think its magic.:D Could be worth a try if you use that app. *shrug*
