Little Things - a happy thread

Yeah sometimes the timing is perfect. Like seeing the big boom (spoiler) while at night.

In fact there are times I'll just sit in some lawn chair on top a building at night and just listen to the combat going on. Every now and then some car will blow and the city will light up over in that direction. Then Cait and I take another shot of whiskey and wait for the next one.

I also came near a battle between some SM and BoS the other night and while I was just giving the battle a pass (I was heading elsewhere) bullets were ricocheting off the rocks and trees near me. No one was actually shooting at me, but I felt like I had to find some cover anyway. Just loved it.

it is funny you mention that. when i sleep, i have a thunderstorm on loop that i play at a low level. helps me sleep. i have actually sat here and listened to the fo4 rain and thought, maybe i can put this on constant loop too. just take immersion a step too far!

I love the little things that you have to find yourself. Like reading people's logs on computers and experiencing their emotions. Has nothing to do with the game, but it makes you feel like you are in an actual world.

I was sneaking through the ground floor of an old house in College Station. I knew there was a feral ghoul on the floor above me, but I didn't know exactly where.

Then I saw dust falling from the ceiling where it stepped. That's what I call "attention to detail".

I love naming my weapons.

I grew my pipe sniper from a little baby pipe pistol.

Sneaking up on the Raiders and listening to them tell stories about someone making machine gun noises, lighting mattresses on fire, or "Let's not get carried away!"

I think my favorite "little thing" is (are?) the teddy bear vignettes. Some are laugh-out-loud funny, others are quite poignant. I also enjoy reading pre-war computer terminals. Many provide a nice insight into how "normal" life was... before. I had to chuckle at he disposition of some police "evidence".

I think they did a good job with the skeleton scenes, too. Some are downright heart-breaking.

dogmeat's definitely a male.

if he was female, all the raider dogs would constantly be after her, in a strictly non-combat way :-)

I'm going to use this post to admit some things I thought I never would.

1. I assumed FO4 would be a pass for me since it still has VATS, but it's quite a bit better than FO3 IMO. It's more streamlined and has no grinding, and I actually use VATS a fair amount. Most improved however is combat and movement, though 3rd person is still only good for very few things. I like that they dropped Skills and Repair too.

2. Leveling goes fairly quickly, esp if you do all the BoS side missions.

3. The settlement development, while a bit quirky, is a fun addition to engage in.

Early on I had literally written off playing this game, as I worried it was too much like FO3. The more I read testimonials on comparisons though, I decided to give it a try, and I'm glad I did. It's turned out to be a lot like The Evil Within was for me, which was another game I wrote off after seeing the initial glitches, but ended up spending a LOT of time playing and enjoying.

That said, I'd love to see them fix some of the many problems with settlement building. It seems to be a work in progress.

i think my favourite one of what i've seen so far is the teddybear doctor in some subway tunnel,

in a place you'll need to wade knee deep in glowing ferals to get there,

and all like "nuke blast bomb war bs so what, i'm a cuddly little teddy bear, i heal other cuddly little teddy bears, and if your fillings hurt, take a seat in the waiting room with the other bears. and put down that fat man already, mind you"...

that bear's just so much better than the whole bunch of institute, bos and whatnot cracknuts... :-)

All of the above!

And another "little" thing, the sheer amount of various actors used to voice the characters and how nicely they match the graphics!

I think they all earned a big thanks for work well done!

Show me a game with better fog and lighting than Fallout 4. They really know how to take advantage of weather and lighting effects to create wildly different scenes while reusing the same general assets.

I got excited when I met Lance Captain Kells on the Prydwen for the first time and realized it was Tim Russ, who I know from one of my favorite TV shows ever, Star Trek: Voyager. :) You never know what actors/actresses you will encounter in big games such as this.

One creepy mannequin scenario I found was where a skeleton was in a bathtub and a bunch of mannequins were gathered around holding objects that could have been used as weapons. In the connecting room, a skeleton was lying in bed with a mannequin. >_>

Creepiest mannequin situation for me, though, was when I first went to the Museum of Witchcraft and there's that moment when you turn down the hall and there's a mannequin at the end, silhouetted in the murky light, and a scary horror-movie-esque sound pops up at that exact moment. Holy crap, I jumped out of my seat at that point because I really thought something scary was there...

I had that on a crystal clear night. Watching it drift off into the distance with inky black vertibirds swirling around is one of my favorite stunning views in all of gaming.

Well my dogmeat must be glitched because if it's a male mine is missing something important.

Games and cartoons rarely ever add private parts onto animals, so it's nothing new. What I will say, though, is that I heard that Dogmeat's design overall was based off of someone's female German Shepherd, so in a way you're not 100% wrong by saying Dogmeat is a female - the appearance, markings, and probably movements of the game dog are based on a real dog.

Yes! The voice acting is so much more diverse than earlier games. And on average, so much better.

Also, love the physics added to hair. Love to see it moving more naturally. And the way ferals clothing blows around.
