Little Things - a happy thread

Post » Sat Jan 30, 2016 12:47 pm

Well rather than just constantly griping about FO4 for various reasons I thought I'd start a list of some of the little things we've found in game that pleasantly surprised us.

1) The sound of rain on the metal roofs in the old houses. First time I heard this was in Sanctuary and I had to stop and just listen for a while.

2) Raindrops on our Power Armor screen. Looks like the inside of my PC Monitor is actually getting wet.

3) The splash from tossing explosives in water. Really surprised me.

4) Just sitting back and watching other factions fight each other. Just gives the feeling that the world is alive even without your involvement.

5) Watching vertibirds crash. Seriously I do hope they add some more armor or something to these things in a patch, but it is fun watching them catch on fire and crash and burn.

I both love and hate how multiple conversations can take place AT ONCE! Just like real-life. Hard to catch it all at times but it is very realistic.

With hundreds of hours put into the game I still have not managed to get my characters stuck in the environment anywhere in the Commonwealth. Not even once. Which, given my experience with previous Bethesda games and the amount of clutter in Fallout 4, is bloody amazing.

Suicide Super Mutants! Though I guess they're not really "little"... One saved my life last night by accidentally on purpose blowing up his squad as they tried to ambush me.

Art vs. Art! Deathclaw vs. Deathclaw! It's not just a show - it's a moral dilemma!

My super secret spec ops character actually feels like the badass sniper / infiltrator she's supposed to be. As I don't play FPS games, that's a rare experience for me.

Spoiler
Getting to paint the Green Monster.

There are a lot of things to appreciate. :)

Dogmeat's expressions.

The first time I saw fog in the game.

The radiation storms.

Getting wet when it rains.

Little puffs of dust that kick up when your companion runs ahead of you.

How you can actually look through the windows (and shoot through broken ones).

How foot step sounds change when going over different terrain.

Sounds of bullets whizzing by your head and/or ricocheting.

and of course,

The sound of rain on the metal roofs.

Liked the upon completing a certain settlement quest the chorus of settlers saying "are you sure we did the right thing." Sat there for a few minutes laughing "are you sure we did the right thing" reminded me of the munchkins from wizard of Oz

I love the LITTLE stories you see around the Commonwealth. The various ways people faced death as depicted in the skeletal tableaus you encounter, for example.

Arlen Glass. I KNEW what was coming, (spoilers, darling!) and still teared up a little when I brought about the completion!

Ghouls! I love how they have different personalities now! Lurking until you're standing on their face, or wandering around, or crawling out of walls and falling from ceilings to come and chew on your face!

The way you can blow limbs off of ghouls, robots, and lower-generation synths.

The way a Minigun barrel starts to glow when you fire for an extended period.

Watching your settlers actually work instead of them wander aimlessly while still somehow feeding and powering a settlement.

Dogmeat. Wow. What a well done German Shepherd.

I live at RR now with Dogmeat. I dismissed him to his doghouse so I could do some crafting, and I was walking from the Garage around through my kitchen area to the bedroom, when I noticed Dogmeat with his front paws up on the window sill looking in to the Diner area of RR. Just like a real dog who wants to come in. I just stood there for a minute looking at him. He whined.

Love it.

I find Fallout 4 graphic absolutely fascinating.

The detail might not be top class... but the way different places can have different environment effects helps the game stay interesting as you travel.

Fog, rain, radiation storm... and sunrise and sunset all make each place feel different everytime you visit them again.

Foggy morning of quiet Diamond City, Sunrise of Libertalia, sunsetting spectacle island... all sights to be seen

I love how ghouls behave in this game. Slithering out of holes in the ceiling! Yikes!

The "surprise-death-claw" at some locations. My real life fight or flight actually kicks in and I (the real me) and my character are scurrying for cover "knowing" that the death claw is right at our backs. Phew! I am sweating now.

edit: thanks LeBurns... I am going to be watching this thread! :)

Explosions and fire are excellent. (Though maybe that's actually a big thing).

Fog is great. It's not used enough in games. Sure, in the past it was used to limit the draw distance, but it can add a lot to the atmosphere.

Glowing Sea feels like a different planet.

Teddy bear scenes.

"Your time has come, evildoer! Now, face the justice of the SILVER SHROUD!"

It must be because of all that friction against air...

I like how you will be walking along when you suddenly hear a firefight going on between two or more groups, and the sound of the gunfire actually echoes, and sounds pretty realistic (I haven't heard real gunfire in person, but when there's a news story where there is gunfire recorded during an actual events...yeah, the distant gunshots in FO4 sound the most realistic out of every shooting game I've played).

Companions' unique comments on different locations and external situations. You can learn quite a bit about them based on what they say when and where. Turns out, Vaults actually creep Danse out, and I would never have expected that from him!

As many others have said, the little scenes from during/after the war. Though some are strangely disturbing, like the skeleton in a bathtub surrounded by mannequins holding various blunt objects... Still, it shows thought went into the placement of each scene.

You can see radiant heat spew from the angry bots when entering cool down mode.

The first time you see a Queen Mirelurk come at you is a hair raising experience.

Tossing dead bodies off of the overpasses or high rises and watching them all the way to the ground never gets old.

The fog in the mountains you can see from a distance in the southwest is nice.

The way Dogmeat will just sit and look at me adoringly while I sit in my Sanctuary apartment and how he goes to his doghouse and lays down when I go to bed.

How the factions ignore me in their battles and are all green if I happen to be in the same place as they are while I'm wandering about.

The silly comments of Supermutants and Raiders as I wander about in stealth in their areas (Here human...human...human...)

Whenever MacReady says "I thought you forgot about me!" when I decide to take him out on a jaunt.

Watching Mirelurks, molerats or Deathclaws go about their business when they don't know I'm there.

Little things mean a lot. :)

- Trying to sneak as close as I can to a deathclaw without detection

- Hunting in the Golden Sea area

- The rad rainstorms

- Building shelters in weird places (like one I built on an overpass)

Forgot one... Those occasional moments where the weather matches an event in an almost perfect way - like the http://i.imgur.com/Lr2eiiT.png.

Sadly, the storm was dying down, and I missed the last lightning strike by seconds.
