Live in Fort Dawnguard... Abandoned?

Well, yeah. The mod's author pretty much states that he abandoned the mod. But has anyone gotten it to function?

Visually, it looks to be working. The problem I'm having is that I've never messed with Dawnguard. I haven't purchased the land in Falkreth, which may be required to get the ball rolling. I do know that when I try to adopt a kid, the woman running Honorhall says that I need to have a home for the kid to stay in even though I have Live in Fort Dawnguard installed. I have no deed to Fort Dawnguard, if that's needed, and the mod mentions no such thing.

I'm assuming it's a wash and I'll have to find somewhere else to live, so I'll also take suggestions for somewhere else fortified. I can't imagine a proper Dragonborn wanting to live in a small, exposed house in the middle of nowhere. ;)

Apparently, you need to reset the cell BEFORE you install the mod???? Wonder what that's all about.

I suspect you have to have completed the questline as well.

Adopting a kid to live at any location other than the regular player homes or the Hearthfires ones usually requires extra modding. There's a http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/29249 mod that lets you designate another home as "suitable for adoptions" as long as it satisfies certain criteria. It has good documentation on what's needed.
