Would be nice, yeah. At the very least, abandoned forts shouldn't be so abundant. And their design should make sense. In Oblivion they didn't always make sense, sometimes they just felt like pure dungeon crawls and not something you would expect soldiers to have lived in. But the same goes for many ayleid ruins. All the traps and gas chambers and hallways. But where did they sleep? Eat? Live?

I don't. Derelict forts make sense in a province that didn't have a war for ages.

Oblivion was kinda meh, seriously. All these forts everywhere... Even ON the roads were there forts... And all of them abandoned by law and order, many times occupied by undead, bandits, marauders, conjurers, necromancers or worse... You would think the Empire used some of these atleast to let caravans and wanderers rest and have safe haven somewhere, but noooooo! Ofcourse the roads and countryside is a mish-mash of chaos without anything even resembling law and order! Bah...

I agree with the OP, perhaps you can make it a poll? If thats possible after the topic has been made...

Some live forts would be nice. Especially ones that have been taken over, and you can help reclaim (or even claim for yourself...)

Yeah it didn't really make sense that there wasn't even one active fort.
It was also funny how every single fort had a underground system...

You′re kidding me, right?
It makes nada sense to let the area outside the city (especially the roads) fall into decay, madness and complete chaos in peacetime OR wartime. How the hell does that make any [censored] sense to you?
Maybe the army has became smaller, the equipment less up-to-date, the training and discipline less harsh... But abandoning everything in the province except the cities because no war has been sighted for some time? [censored] that.

In Cyrodiil this could be excused with the simple explanation that the Empire is crumbling, and have been crumbling ever since Morrowind. But in Skyrim there are independant Kingdoms (even more independant now with the fall of the Septim Empire) that fight and fear eachother. They cant let their defences crumble, they have to be ever vigilant against their neighbours.

EDIT: Thanks for the poll.

Interesting. I always reckoned this multitude of undead only made sense if they were the byproduct of dreadful events that happened in rather recent wars.

They need smart placement of forts, so they can actually control an area. That fort right near Balmora was built into the hillside such that you could jump down into it, and that's outrageously goofy. Who the hell would build a fort like that?

The abandoned forts were overused in my opinion. Sure a handfull of forts may have falled into disuse after years of peace but every fort? I hope that in Skyrim we'd have mostly 'live' forts mixed with a handful of old abandoned forts possibly now in use by bandits etc

The possibility of civil war in Skyrim gives a good reason to use forts.

If there is a civil war in Skyrim, than the factions/armies/kingdoms must use forts right? It would be nice if we can join a faction/kingdom/army and have a fort.

They had live forts in Morrowind, just with some soldiers and some priests though.

If that was the case, people would have taken the forts apart for the building materials. Taking apart a stone building to reuse the stone is easier than quarrying new stone. Actually that's what happened to the Coliseum in Rome, they started taking it apart for the stone.

I definitely want live forts. In Oblivion, it was as if Cyrodiil was once (perhaps it still is) the land of the dead or something. Ayleid "cities" were actually tombs, there wasn't any sign of places for people to live in, except the dead. The Forts sometimes had tombs in them as well, and some looked more like dungeons trying to keep things inside than forts trying to keep things out.

IMO the Forts in Morrowind were better than the ruined, dead Forts in Oblivion, even if they didn't have any gates like a Fort should have.

There is no need to garrison forts. All they need to do is release a prisoner.

Not if they expected conflict.

Letting them be breeding spots for thieves/undead/etc. sounds like [censored] internal policy. Would make much more sense to re-purpose them as taverns or hunting lodges.

I also agree that their design wasn't exactly sound: a huge absurdly difficult to build underground network of rooms with no logical correlation.

What's worst is that almost if not all of them were essentially the same thing. A dungeon with baddies of the same difficulty with boring loot. I think there were one or two exceptions but the thing is the ruins could have just as well been replaced by a simple cave entrance because they're essentially the same thing.

I would like a mix of both personally. It didn't really make sense to me for all the forts to be abandoned. Especially since the empire was not at war so all the troops (besides the ones stationed elsewhere obviously) were in Cyrodiil. At least I would think so. And if the explanation was the legion was too scattered across Tamriel then someone should have invaded.
.... Oh wait :obliviongate:

Sometimes less is more. The number of forts in Skyrim compared to Oblivion needs to be drastically less. And yes, at least a few of them need to be populated as waypoints between settlements.

Since we know TES V will have "Brothers of Skyrim killing each other" or whatever. It's safe to assume that nearly all convenient Command Posts should be seized. But will Bethesda let the Nords be smart?

who knows..

Definitely looking for some realism. :ermm:
