Live won't let me play my mods

Post » Thu Aug 26, 2010 11:59 am

Fallout 3 is in fact an online game, correct? So why do we need Live for our mods? Now lets forget if our internet goes out, there have been instances where for some reason for days, DAYS at a time live has gone out on Fallout 3. My internet was fine; I could do whatever I wanted in that case. And even stranger while Fallout's live was out I could go on my Xbox live. Now before you start asking, no I was not on them at the same time, I just shut Fallout off, then turned on the Xbox and live came on. So is something wrong with Fallout's live, or my game itself, or am I supremely stupid and missing something?

Well no, it's entirely single player. There's absolutely no online component to it at all.

So why do we need Live for our mods?

You don't. My Live is disabled because I'm using FOSE, but I can still play any mods I want. Live isn't necessary at all, it's only used to download the DLCs for the game. After that it's not needed for anything. Certainly not for mods. Live doesn't provide any of those, only the official DLCs.

So is something wrong with Fallout's live, or my game itself, or am I supremely stupid and missing something?

I'd say you're missing something. I don't even have Live active yet I have no problem with the game, or modding, at all.

Are you talking about the DLCs? Because I don't have them, but I don't think you need to be connected to the internet to play them.

Also, Fallout 3 is a single player game, I.E. Off-line.
I'm not sure what the problem here is.

The DLCs don't work? The Fallout version of live doesn't work? Are you on the PC? Are you running it on the X-Box?

Steam is the reason I won't be playing new vegas >_<

Apart from that. You don't need live to play offline. And modding the game doesn't require you to use live either. Do you have the GOTY version or an older version on disc without the dlc's? You may just need a patch if that's the case.

FO3 is really offline and to also add has nothing to do with xbox.

I meant to say not online :glare: . Regardless I'm talking about DLC's and I'm pretty sure it won't let me play without live. Besides all of my recent saves are on live, and I don't know if there is even a way to copy them into the normal game.

Steam is a problem because they're looking for a problem to bellyache about. Steam is only truly a problem with NV if you have problems connecting to Steam for authentication or if your system doesn't take kindly to Steam. Beyond that, it can just be run in Offline mode.

Steam enabled me to play Mass Effect 1 without the draconian DRM that the retail version had, and also 3 years late when no one sold the retail version anymore. It also introduced me to Team Fortress 2.

Anyhoo... the link to fixing the Live problem is above in Pintocat's post. If you use FO3 Mod Manager, you can even disable the XLive.dll entirely.

EDIT: Just noticed there's no mention of gamesave transferral in there.

Your savegames are in your My Documents\My Games\Fallout 3\Saves\(GFWLName). Just move them up one level into the Saves folder and they'll be accessible again.

I was pretty dead set against Steam when I heard that Civ 5 will require it, but I'm starting to loosen up a bit. I just don't like the idea of some third party being involved with my games, nor do I like having to activate anything online. I still haven't decided yet whether I'll go for it or not though. I'll probably wait awhile and see how things are working out for everyone first. At least with two games I want to play requiring it, Steam won't just be some bloatware filling up my hard drive and using up resources, which was one of my initial reactions to Civ 5.

The whole aspect of 3rd party software being between you and your game is kinda irksome to me, but Steam is certainly the least annoying of all of them. No "installation count", and you can DL it if you lose the disk instead of having to buy a new one.

Seriously, it is impossible to be anti-Steam unless you've never played any Valve games or bought anything on it. Try TF2/L4D with a couple of friends and you'll soon see how spectacularly useful it is for organising groups, patching, handling chat and so on.
As proof of how good Steam is, my DVD drive broke over year ago now, and the only reason I'm considering fixing it is Steam don't sell the Limited Edition NV. Everything else I've bought for a year has been off Steam, cheaper than retail, and often in a package with vastly more games (e.g. entire of THQ's catalogue for the past few years along with the Dawn of War 2 expansion, for the same price as the expansion alone in shops).
E: Actually you can probably just activate the CD key on Steam and download, I don't think I'd even need the disk.

E: No wait, I bought C&C4 having forgotten my drive was broken. Having to go to the length of borrowing someone's spare external to play it made it seem even more disappointing.

Well that's the thing, I don't play online, purchase anything or chat. So other than another form of DRM, Steam offers nothing for me. And I'm not keen with online activation of a game, especially when there's a third party handling it. It introduces a number of variables that I'm just not comfortable with.

Live on the xbox and live on PC are two entirely separatly run systems. If one is down, the other could be unnafected. Its like saying, I cant get a signal on my TV, so my radio must not work either. You see?
