My Load Order - What to Merge?

I have a fairly stable setup and no major problems (few crashes after hours of gameplay, but nothing major), and even though I keep a tab on updates of mods that I have installed, wanted to get input from more experienced users about the latest incompatibilities/updates that i haven't yet read about:

My PC is one a really super gaming mean machine, so I can take on the more graphic and CPU demanding mods with ease:
Intel i930@2.80 GHz
EVGA 480 GTX - 1.5GB DDR5
6 GB DDR3
Win 7 64 bit
80 GB SSD
2 TB HDD2
Connected to 46" HDTV and HomeTheater for video/audio
Motherboard sound (My Creative XtremeGamer crashes the PC, so uninstalled).

I use QTP3 and Bomret's SI textures. I have SI and all the official DLs as well.
I also use OBSE, OSR, WeOCPS, WB, OBMM, TES4LODGen, LandMagic etc. And of course, I can't live without BOSS or BOMM.

Why mess with it and run the risk of screwing it up?

This is how I feel about it, but if you are going to merge anything, stick within a mod. For example, you could merge the QAL add-ons together, the HF add-ons together, the KCAS add-ons and the maybe a few of the RBP add-ons. <-- four separate merges

Do clean updates when you introduce the merges. Save without the plugins you plan to merge active, and then add the merged plugins in their places. Those are the simplest merges you could do. You may want to put off the RBP add-ons merge.

Totally off topic, but are you using that for the game drive and how big of a difference is it making?

I too would love to know how the solid state drive is working - even as an OS drive, but especially as a game drive. Those seem very interesting/appealing.

As for merging - after trying and failing many different types of merges here are some tips ... avoid mods that are under continual development because merging them will likely void support and with each update you are back to merging again. It is better to stick to mods no longer in developement and are considered done.

Avoid mods that alter cell and world space records - again this can screw up patches and other things like how things are named. If they alter the same thing is even worse.

It is best to stick to mods that only affect specific things exclusively then merge with other mods that have the same scope.

Avoid merging mods that would ruin your game if you uninstalled them - so say you merged a mod that needs to remain installed with another mod that just got updated ... or the merger turns out to have errors.

for myself I've merged game tweaks mostly ... bells and whistles mostly. Anything beyond that I have to accept that whatever it is is temporary as an error may come up and I have to remove it.

I too would love to know how the solid state drive is working - even as an OS drive, but especially as a game drive. Those seem very interesting/appealing.

Whew! Those are some good responses and suggestions already. That's why I love this community :celebration:

By your own admission your modded setup is working just fine as you have it now.
Why mess with it and run the risk of screwing it up?

I guess I am a glutton for punishment, or that's what my wife calls me :facepalm: Frankly, I enjoy the constant updating and learning/fiddling with WB and other tools. Maybe that's the engineer in me enjoying Oblivion in my own way as well...

I know that some things have been updated that might eventually cause problems (I just haven't noticed them).

Arthmoor - thanks for the tip there. I'll fix right away (Shouldn't Wrye Bash's mod Checker tell me that? It doesn't and I never caught it either...)

corepc - the MMM addons/optional/required usually are the ones that I just don't understand at all - I found your latest thread about MMM optional addons (on the first page today), but I haven't understood how to make it play with FCOM... I'll have to study a bit more... thanks for your inputs. Oblivion wouldn't be the same without your efforts! :bowdown:

QALs for DLCs are already merged into the bashed patch, so I guess I don't need to bother with those, right?

I have the Intel SSD as both a OS drive, and game drive (in another partition)- it has been blazing fast and awesome overall. I startup in 20-30 seconds, and shutdown in 4-5 seconds!!
For the game, I have not noticed an issue at all and an amazing improvement over my previous computer (no stutter on max settings with QTP3 on this setup), but that could be due to the CPU, GPU and SSD combined... but this has definitely helped speed up things everywhere... I would totally recommend an SSD. :goodjob:

For your active number of mods, yes, you're already covered. If you're worried about eventually hitting the file count limit for the Data folder, you may need to consider merging them together. If they're all mergeable separate, the resulting single file should be mergeable too. So you still save the slots too.

SSD Stuff: Since Windows 7 tells me my harddrive is what's holding me back, an SSD would make sense to remove the bottleneck. The only problem being the ridiculous cost :)

If you turn on Bash's auto-ghosting, since merged plugins are actually deactivated, merged plugins would not count toward anything, anyway...

PS: I've noticed that if I use the ghosting feature of Wryebash, I cannot use BOSS from anywhere else (e.g., fom the data folder, or InsanitySorrow's Oblivion Launcher) but only from the icon at the bottom of WryeBash itself, as it turns off ghosting first, Bosses the load order, and then turns on ghosting again. If I do it from somewhere else, BOSS just piles all the ghosted mods at the bottom of my WryeBash LO!!!

Nice to see this change. I thought anything imported in the bashed patch could be checked off (from a check sign to a + sign) to reduce the esp count. I have lately come across 2 exceptions:
- Younger Hotter NPCs (Imported via NPC Faces) - can't select it to a +
- AgarVaried SoundSpells (imported via Spell Sounds?) - can't select it to a + either, and counts as an esp.

I've reported the first one in the WB thread, but the second came up just today... Is my understanding (anything imported in the bashed patch could be checked off (from a check sign to a + sign)) of the importing function flawed? It would be good to know...

Anything else you think I should tweak? Is the Keychain mod really useless with DarkNDarnUI - I assume I can just not open the Keys section header at all to obtain the same functionality...

PS: I still get CTD when I try to grind some gems in my FCOM - I removed MMM Gem Dust plugin (as corepc and vegetabill asked), and am letting OOO do the geomancy thing, but still crashes. Something wrong that you can spot there in my LO?

I use Darnified UI, but I think it is about the same in this regard.
Yes it is essentially useless. The Key chain's job is to shrink the keys down to one space on your menu (as you have no real need to select or see any individual key). Darnified (and variants) allows you to 'close' each section, so you can simply close off the "keys" section (by clicking on the "keys" title) doing the same job.
Actually it goes two better:
1. It gets rid off all key slots, leaving just the title, not even one for the key-chain.
2. The Key-chain tends (or at least it did way back when I had it) not to cover all keys, such as most (if not all) that come from extra mods.

In short; I suggest saving yourself the load order slot. :D (Of course some just like the idea of having a key ring, that's fine too of course.)
