No Loading Screens?

Post » Thu Nov 26, 2015 8:08 pm

I don't see any discussion on this, but we didn't see any loading screens in the game play demos. Of course, the only doors we saw the player go through to my knowledge were the front door of their house, and the house they built.

But we saw a lot of buildings with interiors with access to the outside and vice versa. So, has Bethesda finally done away with loading screen transitions when entering buildings? Thoughts, comments? Speculation?

Of things to think about, this ranks about the same level as "Are Brahmin in the game".

I think it is a pretty big upgrade if true. A lot more immersive of a world than anything seen from Bethesda previously.

While it may be possible that Bethesda did away with loading screens, the evidence may suggest otherwise. They are still using a version of the Creation engine (Gamebryo) which relies heavily on cells. Generally these cells require loading screens between them, if my limited knowledge serves me correctly. Also, I don't think Bethesda would waste any time showing load screens during their demo.

There will be loading screens for sure. A game of that magnitude will have them.

On another note, we did not see them at E3 because Bethesda's paid a decent amount of money to be there and showing loading screens is not the most cost effective way to attract cash flow.

I don't mind loading screens. They're a thing of the medium. Cells need to load and all that. They're annoying if they take a long time like New Vegas's did on the console, but it's like really low on my curiosity list. The condundrum "will I be able to shoot things?" ranks higher.

I just wondered, because we didn't see any at E3, and Bethesda hasn't traditionally been shy about showing the loading screens in gameplay demos at E3 before.

I was hoping maybe they'd borrowed some of id's tech and added streaming of cells to the Creation Engine.

EDIT: Not that loading screens bother me - with a PC they are almost instantaneous for me any way. I'm just genuinely curious.

I agree! I think it will be a big advancement to not have loading between exteriors and interiors, if, as you said, it's true.

The insane use of loading screen in earlier games is because previous generation consoles had very little memory.

This is why the strip and surrounding areas in FO:NV is divided into lots of small courtyards.

The other reason is to keep the amount of AI and physic calculations down but this only become an problem if the cell is far more than 10 time larger.

its no loading screens outside. An decent chance we only get them for larger structures.

Some of the more recent mods have "houses" that are actualy just part of the outdoor set, but it helps if there in one of the "non spawning bits" of the map.

No problem making this, part of the problem is that skyrim expect load doors, quite possible to preload populated areas too but this was not done as it would require too much memory for previous gen consoles, it work on pc but give an loading anyway as its not well preloaded.

This is true, but buildings can be part of the game world with this engine. It was done by modders over a decade ago in Morrowind. The problem is not the engine. As Zaria said above, the problem is consoles.

If the new generation of consoles are able to handle this extra data then buildings (and towns) that are in the world space should be possible.
