Loading Screens

30-60 seconds
Somebody should be installing the game to their harddrive, cuts down on load time. I've never had anything longer then 15-25 seconds on my 360 when playing Oblivion.

can you do that with a PS3?

Yes. As a matter of fact, it's mandatory, or done automatically, with many games. This might be the case with Skyrim.

I have seen it plenty of times and I saw one instance of LOD and that was the very end and it was a lot farther than 30m
I think you are seeing some of the visual effects on it

It wasn't me who said there was LOD problems.

He-he, I guess the longest load time I ever had on my PC was less than 10 seconds, when average was like 5 :disguise:

Yeah, why can't Bethesda do impossible things like having amazingly short loading screens when they need to load a lot of stuff on old hardware?

wouldn't it be possible to add a in between small space to facilitate loading? kinda like this but with gates slowly opening or something

I don't see that at all? The mountains in the distance look gorgeous. Anyways, I was referring to clutter items.

I'm not seeing it either.

I'll go back and watch it, but I've seen it so many times and haven't noticed it.

At 23-24 in the trailer. Middle-left part of the screen. A bush is faded in within the rendered view distance. The dragon is just above the tree tops so the distance isn't that far at all.
Here's two images:

Just view the trailer though. Easier to see there. You can see one more bush being faded in right beside this one before the dragon flies over it and you can't see it anymore.

Definitely not as far as you would expect at least when Bethesda says the big thing about this new engine is that it draws everything and the view distance is so far.

Concerning loading screens. I think it's too much to expect no loading screens at all. But I would at least expect open cities, with this new engine being "supposedly" capable of drawing "everything" and all. Hell, Bethesda said the real reason they didn't choose Id tech 5 engine was because it didn't handle drawing so much objects in big open worlds! One could surely expect a bit more of the Creation Engine when they say that, in my honest opinion. Expect at least open cties, I'd say.

Also, concerning all the items/clutter Skyrim supposedly has. There is a view distance like we saw above. A pretty short one to be honest. View distances can be related to different kinds of objects, technically. Wouldn't theoretically be possible to have no loading screens at all if you came up with a sophisticated rendering system that has different draw distances for certain clutter items that would otherwise cause things to lag. For instance, a certain draw distance for cups, bowls, chairs, tables, etc etc. All that clutter stuff that is normally in houses. If a short draw distance could be attached to those items specifically, then we wouldn't really need loading screens. Because as I see it, it's in towns the problem is - where every house got lots of clutter inside it. It's in towns we got loading screens. Both into towns themselves and into houses. Definitely not sure of this, but I think/guess, of course.

Yes the bush/whatever has disappeared there, but have you noticed the other stuff is still there in the distance. So the draw distance is improved. It's probably a graphical glitch or whatever. You can't say the draw distance isn't more because of that bush, because other things are still there, and in the distance....which indicates to me,a better draw distance. :)

Of course it's better draw distance :P
They kind of even solved it in Fallout 3: http://img.techpowerup.org/100616/FO3_Supreme.jpg

The draw distance is certainly different for different kind of items, like in Oblivion. I'm pretty sure most rocks are visible now and definitely all buildings (like in FO3 but improved further I guess).
The explanation for the bush is that some bush and foliage (most definitely grass too) have seperated view distances than other things.
I just thought it could be better (longer) even so, considering that Bethesda has said that the special thing about the Creation engine is that it draws everything and the view distance is so big in the open world. I thought it could draw more. I know it was taken on consoles, but still. If the special thing about the engine is what I said above, you should expect more. Otherwise they might as well have used Id tech 5? This puzzles me.

The draw distance is better, but it can only go so far.
1: because of the consoles power
2: It's not like a shooter or racing game,it's a huge open world, sometimes thing's have to give in that situation.Even so there are parts in the trailer that do show good draw distance. And i believe it's good enough, considering what else they have pushed and forced these consoles to do....i think it's impressive.....Maybe i'm easier to please than others. :)

Sometimes they maybe. But once it's loaded at least when we enter a city etc,we'll know it's as detailed as can possibly be. I don't have an issue with it at all.Plus we'll get some good art to look at while it's loading,it's not all bad. :)

My guess is because of consoles, or not that optimized engine as it could/should have been. That it's an open world is also somewhat related, but not necessarily too much. What you see really far away, all the trees, rocks, buildings or w/e are really low-performance meshes and textures of their originals. When you get closer, the goal is to somewhat seamlessly (not like Oblivion ... where they popped up, lol :P) then render them in full detail as you go closer. So what you see really far away doesn't really hurt the performance that much. It definitely shouldn't today. What hurts the performance a lot is how much is actually fully rendered with full detail.

Also, from what we've seen so far, Skyrim's view distance isn't actually that far at all. It's quite short actually. Oblivion's view distance was far longer (Yet with less objects. A better example is FO3 which had more objects rendered. Buildings rocks, etc). The best measurement of the view distance, without getting confused with big-looking mountains, is to look at the trees. When you look at the trees on the farthest views we got, it's not that far at all.

All the views above is basically as "small" view distance as this picture from Oblivion here: http://phibiansoft.net/files/oblivion192012008qaa16aftaa.png

Not to mention you can install games on the Xbox 360, making them faster.
Not sure about the PS3 though.

The key words to your post are " what we've seen so far". :)
I'm happy with what i've seen in the screens and the trailer.Though granted screens don't do full justice. We'll get a better look at some point ( possibly E3 ) .But like i said considering all they are adding, and with the fact it's a huge open world....i think it's good enough. :)

If you think it should be better, that's up to you,i have no problem with that.I'm happy with what i see so far,but we'll see more soon i don't doubt.

I'm fine with what it is. But when Bethesda really say that the special thing about the new engine is that it draws everything and the view distance is so far in the open world, this kind of annoys me. It's like a game developer would say "Our engine focuses a lot on lighting and that. That's our special thing." yet the game would have no dynamic shadows.

I'm not saying Bethesda has lied, because as you say we definitely haven't seen all so far. But we have still seen quite a bit of the game, and that puzzles me and kind of annoys me. The problem I got is with what Bethesda said, not with the view distance actually being what I wrote above. When Bethesda says what they say, I just think one could expect more.

Some of the loads in, particularly New Vegas, were awful. Oblivion as well, had some bad Loads (Particularly if you had been in town for a while and exited). I honestly don't think Skyrim will make great strides in loading times, but you can always reduce them by installing to the Hard Drive. With a game like Skyrim, Oblivion, Fallout 3 and New Vegas, you should anyway, as it puts less stress on the disc drive.

I know it's kind of an odd request, but a lot of the concept art I've seen for Skyrim, I think I'd really like it to be put in the loading screens. Also, instead of "Tips", maybe some background on the lore, for people who don't make a habit of seeking out some information.

Has anyone installed Oblivion/FO3 to their SSD? My is kind of full already with a few games I've been playing, and I'm trying to find a comparable reference point to see how much faster SR will load on one.
