Loading Screens

Post » Thu Nov 12, 2009 7:21 pm

Alright so I have checked quite the amount of threads and really dug up nothing on it but one simple question to ask. Are the loading screens gonna take 30-60 freakin seconds on 360 and PS3 like they did in Fallouts and Oblivion? Honestly this is my biggest and possibly only fib about these games, not assuming anyone really cares if I liked it or not, but seriously.
Nothing killed the flow and immersion like waiting days upon days for the loading screens that were EVERYWHERE. I don't mind the amount, just the length really, my hopes are that their new engine and performance will help but im kinda scared.

That + depends on how many objects there are to render + how well optimized the engine really is.

I rarely ever experienced loading screens that long, if they were that long, that was as long as they ever got. I don't like that the bigger cities are going to have walls but there not much about that, that can be helped.

I am pretty confident that the loading screens wil be tolerable. After hearing that the big cities wont be open, i was sort of disappointed but i understand the limitations of console memory and im sure that this had to be done in order to keep loading screens tolerable.

I meant it as 5 plus years they've been working with the current hardware. Over 5 years. They know the ins and outs and the tricks and techniques now.

Im not sure if the 360 had the "install game to hard drive" feature when Oblivion was released, but I'm sure that will help with load times as well as Beth's familiarity with the hardware.

personally, i like longer load screens, that means that they jammed the cell with moar goodies for us, and it doubles as a good way for me to take a pee break.

Are you kidding me? The loading times were horrendous on the Xbox. I mean, it's understandable given the technology at the time and the mass size and detail of the game.

But I'm sure the 360/PS3 won't have to deal with much more than 5 seconds loading times at max. Maybe more for the initial loading up your saved game.

what about on PC like loading cells for cities will pc gamers have to mod that or will the cities be open on PC.

Also will the game have a 64bit exe that way we can use more ram for preloading cells

We'll have to mod it if you want open cities.

And I doubt it.

True, but a little nit-picking is always fine.

I doubt they'll be that bad again and they were bad at least on my ps3 but the engine was such a ram hog it's ridiculous I'm pretty sure the new engine should be a lot better since the current gen specs were all avialible to build off of their not going to put a bunch of time and money into an engine that's going to be crap on the consoles we'll have for the next 3-5 years

Okay, let's nit-pick about attributes...

5 seconds? damn that would be quick... but I think you're setting yourself up for disappointment with that estimate.

Hah I dont mean to nit pick but looking back all I can remember were these really long loading screens that broke up the flow of a game like crazy. It wouldnt be terrible if i had infinite time but i think we can all agree that we are either proud, surprised or horrified by the amount of time we play these games for and i just want more time playing the game then waiting is all.

Ah, but that's a topic for another thread. ;)

Anyways, hopefully Skyrim being on my SSD will cut down any load times there are. Not that I'm worried that they'll be anything but 2-5 seconds, but I want as smooth of an experience as possible.

There are tons of ways to implement stuff. Some ways are much better than others. I'm sure they've gotten better at this now, but I don't think we can just say that they simply "know" every optimization trick there is. They surely know more than in Oblivion, obviously, but we can't just say they know everything. That's just speculation. That Skyrim still got loading screens can make one wonder how well optimized the engine really is. We simply don't know and we need more info on it.

This is one of the reasons why I would think it would be nice with full "technology" interview. About the engine, its features, improvements, technical stuff etc. Most game developers I know have this. Kind of expecting it for Skyrim, especially now that they got a new engine.

-----------------------
OT: 30-60 seconds loading times? Seriously? That sounds insane. Seriously. If my comp had so long loading times for Oblivion I would have quit the game long ago.

same hardware though, it would be a lot faster if it stayed the same, but the games got improved

the main problem with the systems is that they dont have enough ram for it, also the reason the big cities wont be open

Thx consoles for having shoddy hardware.

Honestly the devs could pull open cities on the PC version within a few days worth of editing the game... :(

I have never had a really long loading time on xbox playing MW. me and a friend of mine used to have arguements about which loading screens were longer fable or MW, I always say fable because you have way more loading screens more often and in my experience they are a couple seconds longer. on average in mw or ob I rarely get more than 25-30 secs loading time.
