Lock-picking and hacking

I agree. Especially now that maxing 5 skills is a stretch. Having 200 points for maybe a couple unique guns is ridiculous. The older games (dont remember which) let you open locks with a strength check, but with a % chance to destroy loot.

I think if their going to have minigames they might as well get rid of the skill points. Just making the mini game harder makes more sense. But they would also need to fix the lockout exploit. The perks would actually be usefull then also.

I'd argue the other side. Scrap the minigames and use stats to determine success. It can be done both ways, as demonstrated by some mods.

If you can shoot doorknobs off then the lockpicking skill is made obsolete.

Exactly.

You can do this ?

No, it was a suggestion made by the OP.

Mr. Sawyer said that's why they made Skill Magazines for thus making this a non-issue

Edit: Though you have to be within reach of the next level of difficulty for it to work though.

I hated the skill-checks for Terminals & Locks in Fallout 3. Any level lockpick/science should be able to access any terminal/lock, the skill of the player should affect your odds/difficulty of said minigame, and not whether you can even attempt it. I may very well just .modav lockpick 100 to ignore it.

Hacking was pretty god awful in FO3 as well. I got to the point where I would just random pick 3 words and if I didn't get a success I would just exit the terminal and try again. Wonder if they fixed that. Kind of makes having hacking skill pointless (except as a skill check of x for y terminal)

You know how in FO3, you could find books that could permanently boost a certain skill?
What if they had like a temporary boost for a certain skill so if you came to a door or safe you couldn't get into, you could boost your skill really quick.
If could be like "magazines" or something.

edited for grammar and maximum sarcasm.

the ultimate effect is the same. the only difference is [censored]s from unspeakable corners of the internet won't be driven to madness by having all those 100s in their skill points all the time
