Lock spells

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 12:18 pm

I was looking through http://uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Spells#Deleting_Spells UESP page, and noticed that there are lock spell. Why aren't the lock spells in game? They are in the construction set, but why not in game?

EDIT: sorry if this is in the wrong forum section

Lock spells were present in Morrowind, but were removed from Oblivion because that made it too easy to grind out Security. Well, at least if Morrowind style lockpicking were retained, that is. It's pretty easy to exploit the Security minigame as it is.

Another reason I believe reason lock was removed from this game was because it was thought it served no purpose whatsoever. I, however, dispute that. Wouldn't be nice if you were being pursued through a dungeon when you pass through a door and jam it shut with a lock spell so your pursuers can't follow?

TBH: I really don't know why Beth didn't bother with lock spells. Sure, they were completely useless in Morrowind (enemies couldn't follow you through doors anyway there), but now in Oblivion, I can think of a few places where having such a spell would be nice.

Yea, apparently it says 'Do Not Use' in the CS. I wonder if it crashes the game or something?

Spells are easy to Dispell with a staff , a lock requires a key and will force you to do a quest. I believe the game was originally meant to be more unique in content, but was not completed as originally intended due to time constraints by Microsoft.

Because in some cases, locking a specific door could break the game. For example, imagine locking Cloud Ruler Temple with a Very Hard Lock and realizing you don't have the spell or the lockpicking ability to unlock it

I realize that something like that could happen, but almost all of us know how easy it is to make enough money to make the spell, or train your security. Does anybody know if it crashes the game?

Edit for rewording

Probably something worse, no problem to make a mod who break the game far harder.
Might simply be a message to the level designers should not use it to lock doors, like locking shop doors at night. Might also cause other problems with AI path finding.

list some lock spells, so people has made mods with them, and no oblivion dvd has burned up.

I have used the command console to lock our bedroom door at night when staying at the Skingrad Mages Guild. I have locked the door set to 99 and locked it set to 100. Does this keep Vigge out? No way. He still woke us up in the middle of the night climbing into bed! My character will only sleep in the inn now when in Skingrad!!!

I wonder why NPCs can just waltz through a door that we have locked? When we have command console locked a door, we have verified it is either 'very hard' or 'requires key' to get in. Argh!! :banghead:

Think I know the reason, the mage guild doors are locked in the start of the game and you get a key then you join, the other members has the key. If you lock the door it should still be opened by the key. Try to pickpocket his key.

It can become more freaky, have a mod where you see your character lay down on the bed, npc might still use the same single bed.
This also happens with dead bodies who is even more scary, if you kill somebody in bed other might climb into it and share it with the body.

All it does is potentially keep NPCs from where they need to be, and offer the oppurtunity to permanently trap yourself. Oblivion just has too many scripted quests that it could break.

So, other than breaking certain quests, we can come up with no other reason? And no one knows why it says 'do not use' in the CS?

If a door is owned by a faction (such as the MagesGuild faction), any member of that faction can go through the door without needing a key, regardless of lock level. The entire interior of the Skingrad Mages Guild hall (including the doors) is owned by the MagesGuild faction.

Since Vigge, the not so Cautious is part of that faction, he can come and go as he pleases. If you use the console to change the ownership of the door to the PlayerFaction and then lock it, Vigge shouldn't be able to enter. Buffy, on the other hand, should be able to come and go as she pleases.

So, other than breaking certain quests, we can come up with no other reason? And no one knows why it says 'do not use' in the CS?

According to the http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Lock, the Lock effect is very glitchy.

Thanks, Vyper. That makes perfect sense. Heh, I think Buffy will continue to stay at the West Weald Inn during her visits to Skingrad and preclude any morning walks of shame down to breakfast induced by Vigge the Letcherous.
