Lockpicking - my favorite skill I never spent a perk on

Post » Tue Dec 13, 2011 5:28 pm

Mine is at 63 and I haven't perked it. My character lvl is 37, I believe.

I can't say I love the minigame but I don't ignore locked doors or chests. If it can be picked, I pick it. I earn a little xp everytime I successfully pick a lock and even if there wasn't anything of any substance [and most times there isn't an item/object whos value is greater than or equal to the effort of having to picked a high level lock] at least I nudged the skill up a touch.

I think that the mini games needs a bit more variety to spice it up somehow. I do think that any skill like that which you can do and not have to put any perks in it at all to max level is probably broken

Or does my memory serve me wrong? From what I remember when I was a novice in Security it didnt even let my try to pick very high class locks (Expert, Master). Or do I remember this from Oscuros Oblivion Overhaul?

That was certainly a feature of OOO, and was implemented into FO3 and FNV as well.

Vanilla Oblivion let you pick any lock you could, like Skyrim.

I loathe it, too easy, too accessible and it's perks aren't worth investing in.

I'd rather have a skill check without a minigame.

Lockpicking is fairly easy in Skyrim and I haven't spent a single perk on Lockpicking

I like the minigame but I think you find WAY to many lockpicks, I've never put a point in lockpicking and I've still never run out of lockpicks.
When the modding tool comes out I'll make sure to get one that reduces the spawn rate of lockpicks by say 90%, that will make it much more exciting! :D

I love Lockpicking, probably one of my favorite skills. I do spend perk points in it if I have extra ones just to get to 50% extra treasures. Getting the Skeleton Key perk is a waste, takes the fun out of it and completely breaks the mini game.

As as big Fallout fan, I don't mind the mini-game. (I do miss "hacking" however :( ).

But yeah, the perk tree is completely pointless. It takes 4-5 perks to get any real benefit out of it...and that could be 80% more damage you're giving up in the process.

Its a very poorly designed perk tree.

At roughly 50 skill, even Master Locks become pretty easy...even easier when you have 150 lockpicks in your inventory like I do.

I believe if lockpicking didn't stop time, that'd be one reason to put points in lockpicking.

Is there any point for some perks to exist in that tree?

I mean, now that i got the hang of it, at novice levels, i don't usually spend more than 5-6 picks for a master lock. And the games offers you more than enough.

The only reason I don't put any perks into the skill is because of all the useless "make locks easier to pick" perks. I don't want to spend points on those. They aren't necessary. I just want all the other perks like never get spotted lock-picking and making containers have more stuff in them.

Are you SERIOUS? One and Two-handed battleaxes, I never hacked more stuff in a computer game all my life! :D :brokencomputer: Even wood...

(Sorry, this one prolly works better in German. If at all, lol.)

Hahaha, funny guy :)

No points, never needed them, not even for master locks, I spend most of the game killing bandits and acquiring their lockpicks, I've had up to a 100 in my inventory, plenty enough to experiment on the locks.

I put points into it, but I still love the mini game.

However is it just me? Or is lock picking really really easy.

Even with zero perks at all, I can usually get a master lock in less than ten tries.

Perhaps the 'correct' position should be changed after every lockpicking attempt. This would make the perks more useful while still making it technically possible to open up all locks without them (though it'd be much harder).

Right now, all locks are relatively easy because the correct position the lockpick needs to be in never changes. After just a few broken picks, I generally have a very good idea where the lockpick needs to go and can open the locks with a very low skill level.

Just like whole game, also lockpicking got redone for consoles. The only difference between the lowest lock lvl, and the hardest, is how many times can you "use" lockpick. On the lowest, you can use it plenty of times, on hardest it breaks after few times. I also dont spend any point on locpicks. Its possible to pick master in the very beginning of the game, with nearly no skill. The Oblivion lockpicking was a challenge.

I have 5 characters and haven't used lockpicking perks on any of them. Even going through the Thief's Guild and the Dark Brotherhood quests I never felt like I needed them.

Lockpicks are very easy to find/buy and I always end up with 99+. I have picked plenty of master locks with a skill level of less than 50 and no perks, all it takes is patience, luck, and lots of lockpicks.

I have come to the conclusion that the lockpicking skill isn't even worth it for me, unless I was playing a thief and trying to break into people's houses. I used to find the mini game fun, but now I'm tired of it, and I hardly ever find anything rewarding inside locked chests or behind locked doors.

I don't really care much for the minigame. I'm putting perks in lockpicking so I can get my loot easier and faster, my goal is the unbreakable lockpick perk.

I like the mini-game. Truth be told, it's much easier than Oblivion's. I usually break around 20 lockpicks or so in Oblivion without the adequate skill, now I can open a Master lock with a single lockpick

I'd like to ask, though: for the "can lockpick unseen perk, while the lockpicking itself is not seen, the act of breaking in or taking stuff from it is still considered a crime, right? How do you go about that? Does it make it so you can lockpick and don't immediately open the door/container?
