Lockpicking involves picking locks

Ok so as pointed out in the larger thread Todd mentions a lockpicking "minigame".

I'm not sure if that means they've changed it or not. It's easy for me to find faults in many aspects of Oblivion, but I for one really liked Oblivion's lockpicking minigame because it was quick and easy once you got the hang of it and involved actually picking the lock rather than an arbitrary puzzle. It felt right and didn't take too long.

Did you like Oblivion lockpicking or are you looking for something new?

I'd prefer a system like in the Thief games, and the worse your lockpicking skill the smaller the sweet spots.

Personally, I don't care whether or not we have a lockpicking minigame - so long as it's in realtime (which I'm assuming it may be given how dialog is).

I would like a hybrid of Oblivion and Fallout's system.

Same here. I hope they keep an option to autopick and don't move to something like Fallout had where you were penalised if you forced the lock rather than play the minigame
Just because I'm cack-handed doesn't mean my character is and I'd rather my characters abilities determine how easy it is to pick locks than mine

I really liked the FO3 style (apart from the force option and the restriction on attempting a lock that was above your skill level), because the higher your skill the bigger the sweet spot - with maxed out skill you could open any lock quite easily no matter how cack-handed you are as a player, but with low skill it was quite fiddly and often broke picks. With a couple of changes for TES though: 1 - You should be able to attempt any lock; and 2 - there should be an auto-pick button similar to OB for those who prefer a pure dice-roll character skill based mechanic over player skill, or those who hate minigames.

As I stated in the other thread, character skill should be the only thing that influences your ability to lock pick. I want a new lock picking mechanic.

I'd prefer a system like in the Thief games, and the worse your lockpicking skill the smaller the sweet spots.

I assume you mean the Thief 3 system as the first two didn't have minigames, instead you had two picks and each lock required that they be used in a certain order. While simplistic I found it really heightened the experience since you were never taken out of the game itself. Thief 3 also didn't pause the world but I felt the lockpicking system was ridiculously easy. While you supposedly had and entire hemisphere of positions available they only used eight cardinal locations, what a loss. After a few locks I could open even very complex locks in a second or two which removed all of the tension from the experience, the system used in Thief 1 & 2 may have been simpler but it complemented the atmosphere.

I was happy with the system they used in FO3, if they expand on that I think it will be fine. I'm also happy if it pauses the game, this is an RPG after all.

How would you do that? random die rolls or automatically unlocking the lock if you have the skill?

As long as I can at least TRY to pick a level 100 lock with a skill of 10, and not like in Fallout, where the game just said that I was to bad for that.

I would much rather have a dice roll. There is nice debate in the other topic on this, so I won't start another here.

If you wanted to make a mini game out of it, than you should at least make it so that you can rarely pick locks with 25 lock picking skill.

I should say, in addition to my earlier post, that generally I despise minigames, and there should always be a character skill based option.

The minigames in ME2 were horrendous, and I never managed to finish the tutorial in Alpha Protocol because I couldn't do the minigames at all - that was a waste of £30 - essentially denied content because I couldn't pair up matching strings of code quick enough. I hope Skyrim doesn't make a similar mistake.

Dude, that would svck, how many lock picks did you go trough in one game?

But yeah, I'd like to see something differient, like actually trying to move the pin into it's sweet spot, not smacking it with the tip of your pick and twisting on the cyilinter when you think that it is at the top, Make it a bit like the lock minigame in Alpha Protocol (yes I played it, and the minigames were actually pretty good), where you have to move the pin to the sweet spot where each pin has varrying tentions. If the minigame is being done in realtime, then that will be hard enough because then you have to worry about a guard coming up on your ass and bust you for break and enter. That would be cwul.....

I think the Oblivion's lockpicking mini-games was fine, BUT I don't want the game to pause for the duration of the lockpicking. Also the lockpicking shouldn't happen instantly. It should take some time, and there should be the tension of being spotted when you're performing it.

FO3 has a good lock-picking mechanic, IMHO. The game just shouldn't stop while we are fiddling with a lock, so there would be a sense of danger to it.

I like FO3's system, the restrictions and the mini game, only it needs more different lock levels. So that you really feel like getting better at lockpicking slowly, rather than being able to unlock better locks only when you reach the 25, 50, 75 and 100 milestones.

So locks ranging from level 1 to 100, and those that are below your current skill level can be picked.

A lot. I didn't keep track of each lock pick, but it was about 15 picks for each lock.

I would like Fallout's but only if i can take on a very hard lock at level five, or something completely new thats hard to master but simple to understand.

I also never got a hang of the lock picking in Oblivion. The whole game is just so slow and boring, and then it expects you to develop this twitch skill in the minigame complete out of line with the rest of the game play. I'm not opposed to lock picking mini game, but it needs to be more intuitive than Oblivions.

I liked the Oblivion lock-picking mini-game but I think it really needs to be in real-time so that you have that element of time pressure as well.
