Easy, check the 10:00 clock and the 2:00 clock positions, this will tell you what side to try on. On the side that breaks, say 10:00 clock ignore and just try on the other side (2:00 clock in this example). Carefully try various positions between 12:00 and 4:00 clock. On area will give more then others and then focus on that area in small changes.

This

Also, only make 2 attempts with one lockpick, if you do more it will break the lockpick. try twice then exit and so on. If it's "very easy" don't move the lockpick at all. Some people make this mistake. :intergalactic:

No problem, we all have been there. The pins will get more plentiful as the game moves on.

just look in cabinets your bobby pin stack will rise rapidly and make sure you accepted the gear from amata and raided her room and the store room near the vault entrance that'll get you another twenty (the ten from the amata and the others from the two locations)

The best containers to find Bobby Pins in are the First Aid Kits. :)

i'll get maybe one or two from a first aid kit, but not very frequently but whenever I look in a cabinet it's constantly three bobby pins, empty whiskey bottle, and an assortment of alcohol, although it's been yonks since i've played completely vanilla :)

By cabinets, are you talking about ones that sometimes have different names attached to it( say, Gun Cabinet or Tool Cabinet for example) ? If so, I must admit that I haven't found as many bobby pins in them as you have. I also think that First Aid Kits are more common than the cabinets, but I could just be missing some of them.

The best haul that I even found in a Kit was about 10-12 items in total! I couldn't believe it! Usually I find 4-7 items in them, but this one was overflowing with goodies. :)

I noticed some strange ammo you're carrying. Is that from a mod or something? :)

Those cabinets are usually called dressers for me, and I find crappy articles of clothing. The ones that I have opened usually only carry copious amounts of booze in them(I haven't found any with bobby pins yet).

Just fyi, there is a mod that allows crafting of bobby pins out of tin cans.

I think that they did a much better job with lockpicking in FO3 than in Oblivion (shudder).

Has anyone ever wondered why you are shown using a screwdriver to lockpick but there is no screwdriver in your inventory? :D

I must say I really struggled with lockpicking, untill I read the Wiki page about it. I haven't broke a single pin since.
Like above, try twice, then exit and try again twice.

Also, using CRAFT and the bobbypin mods means you can make them out of tin cans
