LOD Trees not matching

Hi there,

I think this may be an issue with Enhanced Vegetation, but my LOD tree models look very different to the close up ones:

Not an issue with the Enhanced Vegetation specifically.

The tree billboards/LODs are just a 2D texture. Even the Vanilla ones look cruddy in a similar way. You're basically transitioning from a long distance 2D texture (essentially a crappy cardboard cutout supposed to look like a tree) to a close range proper 3D model with a nice texture.

There's no way that it's ever going to look 'right', because it's a shoddy transition even at the best of times in Vanilla Oblivion.

I'm afraid you'll have to live with it.

yeah. Its a core render engine effect, wherein it swaps a 2d flat texture that stands for the 3d tree for the actual 3d tree.

Most you could do (even without mods, same issue exists in Vanilla Oblivion) is probably move the transition distance.

In your Oblivion.ini file, look for the bForceFullLOD setting and set it to 1. That tree in your first link is way too close to still be using an LOD model, and this setting will generally force the transition to happen much further out and with the full display of the tree instead of gradually filling out.

Yes, it may impact FPS some, but it usually isn't enough to notice.

I understand that, however what probably isn't quite as obvious is that many of the LOD trees don't seem to match the 3D models. Almost always the LOD model is not inline with the 3D model - the 3D model doesn't just pop-in, it pops-in about half to a third of the trunk width to the left- as if the tree is moving. This is much more apparent with the foliage. My understanding is that when the 3D model appears, the cardboard cut remains in front of the model and slowly fades as you move closer - thus providing a gradual transition between LOD and 3D. However, as the LOD cutout doesn't allign with the 3D model it appears as if there are two trees. Often, although I don't have an example, the LOD model is a different tree altogether than the 3D model.

Well, if that specific aspect of the problem (i.e the tree LOD improperly aligned against the 3D model) is only confined to that one mod and doesn't occur in Vanilla Oblivion for you, then I'd say it might be the result of the same trouble I've had personally with my own mod:

When you're creating new tree billboards / LODs for a mod, it's easy to get mixed up and a:) end up having the wrong tree LOD on some trees and b:) hard to line up the tree LOD and the tree model perfectly. I only know from my own personal experience that I never got it right with my own mod which re-textured the trees and their LODs. Ended up with plenty of mismatched shapes, sizes and positions with the LODs compared to the 3D model, but ultimately didn't care because it was just too fiddly to go beyond a certain level for a - let's be honest - crappy flat cutout that won't pass for a tree even under optimal conditions.

I don't think I've used the enhanced vegetation mod, but it might very well have that sort of issue. It's a fiddly thing to do.

But, as I said, I could be wrong in the case of that specific mod.
