LOL is now an English word

If in twenty years I hear my son say "Lol" out loud, I will personally beat whoever added that to the Dictionary.

Well, lets put it this way... who would say "Laugh out loud." out of no where when having a day to day conversation with someone anyways? No one. If you find something funny, you laugh, smile, or blush. Lol was made as a way of presenting that over the internet, since for the most part no one can see you or hear you.

Your not going to be told a joke and just say, "Lol." your going to go, "BWAHAHAHAAH! DAWG, U SO FUNNY!"

That's a point. "lol" happened as compensation for lack of a way of expressing honest laughter in text-based communication. It has no sensible place in spoken communication.

It doesn't bother me too much to be honest, even if spoken textspeak tends to annoy me.

My friend said 'Lol' and 'omg' outloud and for some reason I thought of schoolgirls that do nothing but text, people that say something like that outloud just sound like an idiot.

This is true, except that, when it is uses, it seems to be used in front of a sentence. "Lol, I just ran over my neighbor's dog. ROFL"

Anyway, in all seriousness, I don't really have a problem with it becoming a "word". I don't have to use it. Although I would prefer that nobody use it. I've always considered people who do use LOL to be idiots. Not sure why. I just do. Same with npeople who don't capitalize or punctuate.

Really? I've never had the misfortune of seeing that. The only places I get my news from are Thedailywh.at, The Daily Show, and sometimes BGSF. :P

Agreed. If someone uses text language in general someplace other then texting (which I abhor) then I just think they're idiots.

Although to be truthful, people have been doing that long before the Internet; example - air quotes.

There was never anything modern or absurd about quotation marks, air quotes are a perfectly reasonable way to show something is a direct quote while talking, imo.

But quotation marks have only been around since the 1700's in English. I'm still not seeing any difference between internet language and other other kind.

Hmm, true. But at least air quotes serve a reasonable purpose. Saying "lol" in a real life conversation just makes you look like a twit, plain and simple.

I don't have a problem with it being used on the internet. In real life though, it's [censored]. Like girly girls that say "Oh-em-gee!" in everyday conversations.

Well first of all, air quotes are almost always used to denote scare quotes (or sarcasm), I have never witnessed someone using air quotes to indicate quotation. Second, there must have been a time when quotation marks were something new (i.e. modern). As for absurd, are you trying to say that there is something absurd about "lol"?

And finally, no, air quotes are as much a reasonable way to indicate scare quotes/sarcasm in speech as is saying "lol" instead of laughing. Intonation is used for that in speech, not wiggling your fingers.
