Long Load Times & Weapon Switching Lag

Post » Tue Jan 12, 2016 1:29 am

So for the first ten levels or so I was blissfully content with FO4's performance. It seems very stable. The AI is vastly improved. NPC's are behaving well. I got a few bugs but, you know, whatever.

But the load times have grown longer and longer, despite the game being played on a fairly powerful rig. But the worst thing I'm getting is this HORRIFIC delay when switching weapons. I went into the Four Leaf Fishpacking Plant and encountered a Legendary ghoul. I ran away and zoned back outside. When I finally arrived I switched to my shotgun. It didn't come to hand. I was stuck, waiting for it, without being able to sprint or run, as I fled from the Legendary ghoul and his four friends (who materialized out of thin air). I was "rescued" by a run in with a band of raiders ambushing a scavenger... at the South Boston Police Dept, which is nearly five blocks away. As I ducked around a building the game finally relented and allowed me to have my shotgun... which I no longer needed.

Folks have said that switching weapons in the pip boy doesn't have the same problem. I'm getting it no matter what I do and I'm tempted to stop playing FO4 until it's fixed.

*sigh*

At least there are no backward flying supermutants....

Have not played in a while, so I'm not 100% sure if it happens at weapons switch, but a lot of times when closing the pipboy, the game autosaves, which causes a very noticable stutter. Could that be it, or is that not happening at weapon switch?

I have this issue when I use hotkeys to change weapons. I'll switch from one to the other and it just takes an insanely long time to come out. I've been in situations with a deathclaw running at me and basically left defenseless because of this lol

It's hardly a fix, but I've found that sometimes scrolling out to third person, back to first person, out to third person again, and back to first person again will cause it to come out. The first time I scroll out and back my hands come up in the proper position but with no visible. The second time the whole animation of actually pulling the gun out will trigger and I'll have the gun.

I can bring up a little on-screen menu of my hotkeyed gear (F key on PC, I don't know about consoles) and if I manually select the guns here this issue doesn't seem to occur. A lot of the time when this happens, I'll have a similar problem with my Pip-boy not appearing. I'll go through the animation of moving my arm up, but I just see nothing there.

Hot key weapon switching can be laggy...sometimes it lags, sometimes it doesn't. I'm also seeing very long delays in having kills registered for xp.

I put it down to typical Beth problems, rather than your rig.

As an aside, whenever I travel near to an overpass, I always look for the mandatory car wreck that falls off it. I'm sort of wondering if I played long enough if all the car wrecks would fall off the overpasses.

For me, I'd say that the hotkeys work just fine about 50% of the time. Another 25% of the time there's a delay, but a relatively short delay of just a few seconds. The remaining 25% of the time it's probably more like 20-30 seconds. This is one things that I'm REALLY hoping to see fixed in the next patch.

Load times got really long after about 70 hours for me. Now I avoid anything with a load screen as much as I can.
The switch lag is immensly annoying. I don't know why it hasn't been fixed in a hot fix yet.

The hotkey weapon switch lag is indeed a big minus of the game. When I change weapons I need the new weapon instantly to fight. I cannot judge the reasons of the delay. Often the weapon change happens immediately, sometimes it's up to say 6 to 10 seconds delay. I fortunately never faced a delay of 20 seconds.

Sometimes the game can use up to 30 seconds swapping weapons for reasons, other times its just the animation, no its not about loading the model, i can use gause switch to assault rifle then back to gaus 10 seconds later while standing still and it hangs. accessing the pipboy tend to solve it, at least it freeze time if you get shot at.

Load times are longer as its more textures and models and they are larger, cells are larger too.

On consoles this is negotiated some with more memory let them cache and preload more stuff. For pc its noticeable longer as we might have to load 4 times as much data than in Skyrim but the hard drive is not faster.

Oof, I feel ya on those weapon-swap delays. Very uncool to have suiciders closing in on you while you've got your thumb up your ass.

I've taken to turning on God Mode (tgm) for the same approx time as the weapon sticks - still isn't great because enemies are closing in and find me, but if they get to be immune to my bullets for ass-pull reasons then so do I.

As for load-times, are you PC and using mods? Changing Fallout.ini to have the long STRINGS/, MUSIC/, etc after it was ultimately detrimental, and you get the same effect with less load pain by clearing it (just delete everything after the = but leave the field itself).

I had a similar problem but I installed the texture optimization mod and turned graphics down. I am guessing that the game has simply trouble to load the textures (the files are huge). Less to process definitly helped. Down from more than an average of 20 sec to 5 sec. Much more fun to play that way.

I know most of you guys are probably on PC, I'm on XBOX One and when I moved Fallout over to an SSD drive it made a night and day difference in everything. Going into buildings now probably takes an average of 3 seconds. There is rarely any studder at all. Much, much, much improved with an SSD drive.

The weapon switch lag for me ranges from 5 seconds to 30 seconds, but sometimes I don't get any lag at all.

The side-effect of this is I tend to focus on clearing an area using just one weapon and my character is built around stealth/sniping to minimize open combat.

Hopefully someone will mod up a fix once GECK arrives, because Bethesda probably won't address this issue.

Welcome to Bethesda games, where everything is laggy. From activating Sneak Mode to triggering any script in the game. Seriously this modified Gamebryo engine has run its course. It's a clunkfest.

Yeah, just started to notice it recently. For me nothing has really changed mod wise on PC. Just going to chalk it up to "Just how it is" for now...

Weapon switching delays is because sometimes the game forgets to load that weapon into the area (having crosshairs with no gun)

I wonder if it has something to do with modded weapons. As in non-modded weapons don't lag, but a weapon with several has to load in more textures or something.

Na, can't be: I get the same problem using the baton and 10mm you actually start the game with, before even leaving Vault 111.

I have experienced both of these issues and both need to be fixed. Some load screens take an age to get through, dunno what the deal is with that. It's not always consistent either. There might be a bit of a memory leak - load screens may tend to get longer the longer I play.

I know this may sound unrelated, but I also experienced huge load delay and FPS drop recently on my PC. I did a little investigation on Proc Explorer and foune that Steam Client was causing it!!

I now run the game from desktop shortcut. Works perfect!

If I run from Steam menu, that client is trying to update all 100+ games I have and for some reason needs 90% of my processor to do it!

hope that helps!
