Long/Short forms of swords , have they ben axed ?

Post » Mon Aug 08, 2011 4:35 pm

In the demo presentation there were a lot of swords which all seemed to have the same naming scheme .... "Sword Type" "Sword" no short or long variations .
Examples : "Imperial Sword" , "Glass Sword" and "Iron Sword" .
Does this mean that the Long/Short variations have been cut from Skyrim ?

Yes ... they have been cut out of Skyrim I'm afraid ...
All swords in the game are labeled "Swords" with no distinction between Long/Short variations .

Evidence points to yes, they've been axed... But we really have no way of knowing for sure.

Yeah I've seen it , this is quite funny .

On-Topic , even the skill description doesn't include short/long variations ...
Maybe there are Swords that are long in their nature and ones that are short , but they haven't given them different gameplay thought as it seems .

That Imperial Sword was too short in the inventory menu.

Maybe all swords in Skyrim are just short swords ....

Indeed, it would ruin one of my characters if there were no short swords. I wanted to make a Duncan character like from Dragon Age Origins.

I'm pretty sure that short swords are now simply "swords," but there will be long swords that are called such.

'Cause all the swords we've seen so far have been pretty short.

If the Legion's return to a Roman decor extends to their weapons, then the Imperial Sword (read:Gladius) should be quite short.

That doesn't make sense. Short swords are a specific, more rare type of sword. The most common type of sword would be a longsword.

Not necessarily. Historically*, short swords were more common than the traditional long sword. The simple reason being that short swords were more handy, easy to use, and quicker and cheaper to build. Long swords tended to only be used by more well off men-at-arms and knights. That being said, spears and axes were far more common than either.

*Yes, I know Tamriel isn't medieval Europe but it's the closest comparison one can make.

Thats not the case , because the "Steel Sword" is very long , looks like a long sword compared to the "Imperial Sword" but both have similar naming schemes ....

On Nirn you can make someone kill their friends by shooting red light out of your hands and into their brain. Does that make sense?

Anyway, it's the only reason I can come up with for the presence of both shortswords (all the so-called "swords" we've seen so far) and the http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-lpfVWKVTw1A/TZTu2w3cP5I/AAAAAAAAAfI/hRysmYN9vw8/s1600/Skyrim_Cavern.jpg

Of course, if it turns out that all swords are simply "swords," but some were by nature longer or shorter, I would accept that, too. And who knows? Maybe they just haven't gotten around to properly naming everything?

I've just confirmed ... the sword in the picture is an "Iron Sword" , and the sword in the other one is a "Glass Sword" .
There is no need for confirmation , I can sadly guarantee to you that Short/Long sword variations have been completely removed

All we know right now is that the name for the longsword has been changed to "sword". This might mean that short swords are still in the game, and are still called "short swords", which designate them from regular longswords, in the same way that daggers are still in the game and are called "daggers" to designate them from other swords.

Just because they weren't in the demo doesn't mean they aren't in the game.

Not quite ... The "Imperial Sword" is very short in nature but is still labeled a sword , while the "Steel Sword" is very long in nature is also labeled a sword .

Did you forget what we're talking about? On Nirn, longswords are more common than shortswords. It would not make sense to have the default "sword" be a shortsword.

So the variation is still there, but the distinction is gone.

I assumed you were applying real-world reasoning to a game.

On Nirn, longswords are more common than shortswords.

Can you source this information?
