Long Sword VS Dagger aka Short Sword

Post » Wed Oct 19, 2011 8:21 pm

In Skyrim when it comes down to the nitty gritty which blade will you go with in a the most dire of situations; regarding close-combat?

Very curious to see which one comes out on top.

Long Sword (Not 2h) is my weapon of choice in pretty much any sword+sorcery game

I know. But in general terms it they would be paired together, rather than paired with a long sword.

Dagger/short sword, i'd really make me happy if i was unable to do stealth kills with a long sword even though its technically 1H.

Sadly in TES games Swords always trump Daggers, at least in my experience. I've found Daggers to be very cumbersome and not useful due to the movement system. I hope with "finishing moves" that Daggers become a'lot more prominent in Skyrim.

Added the short sword option, however it will lose vs the other two. They really are not the same but yeah.

Long sword I guess, just without the "fool". Its not like my character is going to be walking around flashing gang signs and new prison tats. I saw enough of that false bravado when I worked at a medium security prison.

When I play heavily armored characters I use a short sword.

ex:
Heavy Armor w/shield = short sword
Light Armor w/shield = longsword
Heavy Armor no shield = Claymore
Light Armor no shield = dagger (although if its a stealth class I rarely use armor at all)

Not too into maces or axes they never really stood out in Morrowind or Oblivion but I hope to use them more in Skyrim.

I'm for daggers. I'm more of a stealthy, sneaky, shadow type. However I usually try to sneak kill with my bow, and if it comes to close combat then the dagger enters your skull.

In my understanding, daggers will do much better than bigger weapons in "stealth kills". And it kind of makes sense, too. Smaller weapons are quicker, faster, and more maneuverable. So if you're doing assassin work, keep that in mind.

Short-sword, but only if I can use it for stealth kills. Otherwise, daggers. My first character will be a woodsman/rogue. Mostly archery, but for the nitty gritty, I want versatility. Long-swords, IMO, are more for barbarous characters and warriors.

I don't think there's anyway to avoid one over the other in game play. Eventually you'll run across a nasty good sword or dagger you'll give into using as well.

There is dagger perk for x16 increase in damage with a dagger when you're sneaking, so they're pretty good for that.
