It's a long wait until November 2012

Post » Fri May 13, 2011 3:08 pm

Seems like you'd be better off with something like Gamefly if you don't like keeping games. That way you could quickly blaze through and "be done" with them and save more precious money than you would reselling them. I'm sure you could knock out at least one game a week, even Skyrim.

It took me over a year to finish Fallout 3, and I only played four out the five DLCs. If I do by Skyrim, it will probably take me longer than that to finish it. I don't actually like renting games. I want to own them, and if I get tired of them, I want someone else to own them.

alright let's compare apples to apples here, entertainment is different than transportation or utility.
you can experience entertainment once and be done with it, but something like a car sees more use.

once again, it depends, I wish the used-media industry was gone.

it's not that game stop makes more money from selling one used games.
let's say someone buys skyrim, giving bethesda $60, and then they sell it back to gamestop for $20.
gamestope then sells it back to someone for $50 landing themselves a solid thirty.
now that guy is done with the game, he brings it back ,and someone else buys it.
let's say this happens 30 times

bethesda has just made $60, while gamestop has just made $900

now let's say there was no used game industry, and that makes half of those buyers sad face, and they refuse to buy a game becuase they can't get it used, so only 15 brand new copies are sold
now bethesda has just made $900

last I checked $900 > $60

if you sell it on places like amazon, they're still losing out on potential buyers because you play and sell, then the next person that bought it plays and sells it, etc.
now bethesda has just made $60 instead of the well deserved 1800

this is mainly why I don't support it.
cars are cars, and many are the same, ford goes out of business? just buy a mazda ( I don't know cars very well but you get the point)
bethesda goes out of business? then no more elder scrolls.
they're different

that's a bold claim for someone that has no idea what they're talking about

You do realize that Bethesda doesn't make $60 per game right? Portions of that price go to Beth, but also go to the publishers, distributors, and retailers, plus any third parties licenses that need to be paid. I imagine that Beth gets closer to $20/game sold and only a margin of that is actually profit. You probably realize this and were just using it as an example, just thought I would clarify for the rest of us.

But your example doesn't take into account any of the costs associated with selling a used game. Only a portion of any sale is actually profit, the rest is cost of goods, overhead, etc.

i think it is foolish because Doomsday is in 2012 and you will only have a month to play it. SO if you want to say good but to friends and family it would be a bad idea to get Skyrimm then because friends and family for the month of an TES game are well not real elves and such. So for the sake of your loved ones...But it this year

Why not just buy the game and not the DLC?

I cant remember the last time I sold a game. I still have my Atari 2600, Amstrad CPC 464, Floppy disks ect.. The amount on resale is so small its not worth it to me.

IAnd in all honesty I really don't need to have GTA4 sitting in a box in the closet let alone on my shelf... Been there done that. Sell it, and there is a few $ for Bethesda and Skyrim. And Rockstar can cry me a river.

This is why I only buy digital downloads via Steam. $40-60 is not bad for games that provide 10x - 20x the amount of content of a DVD/blu-ray/movie ticket. Beth games, however are a whole different level of value because each playthrough can last hundreds of hours.

I have no idea what % of the market is used games, but I know it is a major problem for film studios. There is a legal concept called the First Sale Doctrine which means that once you buy a tangible good, you are free to do whatever you want with it, including resell it. For software and video games, it becomes a grey area.

Ultimately, however the cost to manufacture a software disc in a box (not collector's edition) is only around 50-60 cents for each unit. For console discs, I imagine this is significantly higher as there would be some sort of license fees for the console manufacturers.

Don't really know too many who are. I'm the type to buy a game and then own/still have it.

I'm the kinda guy that buys games, then builds a pyramid then when I die I get buried with said games under the pyramid for thousands of years until some weird English explorer comes to my tomb and avoid all the traps and seeks the awesome DVDs of glory..... ops

got carried away :P

If you wait for the GOTY edition, then you'll get approximately a month of playing it before the world ends.

And, what's worse, is that you'll have missed out on a whole year's worth of Skyrimmy Goodness.

Your loss.

Twenty-two months is a long time to wait for this game. I'm talking, of course, about the GOTY edition of Skyrim that will have all the DLC on the disc. The GOTY versions of Bethesda games usually come out about a year later.

Why wait until then? Because I hate paying for DRM (digital restrictions management), and I know that Bethesda is going to announce a bunch of DLC soon after the game's release, and I hate DLC. I hate the fact that I can't resell it when I'm done with it. So I'll just have to wait until November 2012 to play Skyrim.

You won't be able to wait.. You'll read the forums on 11/11/11 and see how totally AWESOME it is and run out and get it :P

thats why you buy Skyrim on release, then wait untill the GOTY comes out. Trade in Skyrim and a crappy game and then get the GOTY edition. Problem solved.

Good for you. Also you will have all the latest patches, and hoepfully most of the things are fixed. For me, I want the vanollia experiance, so I don't care for DLC. I still haven't gotten the DLC for New Vegas yet, becuase I am still enjoying the vanollia experiance. DLC and mods are over rated, so for me don't matter.

Good for you that you can wait the extra year. This is how I view games now (except for TES games), Game is released on so and so date, so I say 6 months to a year when game is fully patched, is the actual release date. Other wise all we are buying now on release date is the beta version.

Don't kid yourself, the game we are buying on 11/11/11 is the beta version. Now that I know I am buying the beta version, I don't get so upset when bugs and things go wrong happen now.

If you're "done" with an Elder Scrolls game, you're not playing it right.
