Twice now while browsing both TESNexus and TESFallout, I've had a bogus message appear informing me that my computer might be at risk and offering to do a virus scan. No matter what I do after that I'm immediately redirected to another web site which appears to be doing something to my computer. Once before I've run into something like this and I ended up with a Trojan that completely screwed up my system, to the point that I had to format my drive and reinstall everything. I sent a message about the situation the first time it happened but since it just occurred again a few minutes ago, I can only surmise that nothing has been done to ensure the security of my system. Which makes me very leery of going back there again. I tried putting it in my Restricted list to limit any intrusions coming from there, but virtaully nothing on the site worked anymore.

I'd say it's you.

edit: That mightn't have sounded quite right. What I mean is, it's been fine for ages, for me. And still is.

Is the message in a completely different window? Is it a pop-up? What? You might have a virus on your computer that's causing these to pop up.

Get Firefox, get NoScript.

Don't complain about someone else's website on Beth's official boards. They don't appreciate it.

If you have security program for your PC you should make a full scan.

Tell the Nexus admins. It's more likely coming from an ad than from the Nexus server itself, and I think the ad services generally give site admins the ability to control which ads can and can't show on their site.

I have not had any problem with TESNexus, not the site or the ads. I second using Firefox.


Edit: I have not run into a problem with any browser, however. I mainly use Firefox and Chrome.

It starts as a popup then opens up into a seperate window. And if it was on my system, I'd be seeing it in every site I go to. It only happens at the TES sites. I read a post awhile back of the same thing happening to someone else. That was a few weeks back so I have to wonder why this is still happening, especially since I sent them a message about the first time.

Indeed, Firefox and NoScript (and knowing/learning how to use that addon properly) ftw. AdBlock Plus is another favourite of mine, though I disable it for (things like) fan-run sites that need the revenue. Also, antivirus and anti-malware, with updates and regular checks. One that will stay resident is nice too, like http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/ for example. Malwarebytes' Antimalware is also worth a look. But there are plenty of options.

Make sure you have a firewall of some kind in place too (most people do, even if it's just Windows Firewall and/or their DSL modem). And that Windows itself is fully updated.

edit: I just went to the site, and explored (haha) its various sections, with Internet Explorer, accepting all cookies that came its way, and even turned off its pop up blocker. There are no addons in place, nothing beyond default IE. And nothing came up, no popups, no virus warnings, nothing.

I do not use NoScript, just Firefox seems to work fine (at least for TESNexus.) I will try that add-on.

I did tell the Nexus admins, twice now as of today. I realize it's no doubt coming from some ad but since it's still happening well over a week after I told them about it, I can only come to the conclusion that they've done nothing to screen their clients to ensure that my system remains secure. It was a major hassle when I got hit by that Trojan, I'm not about to take the chance of it happening again. It was the exact same situation as what has just occured twice now.

Thx for the NoScript tip! I picked up a nasty virus browsing Nexus a couple days ago, but it came through an advertisemant I clicked by mistake. Nothing wrong with Nexus.

I can't remember the last time I had an ad sneak up on me browsing TESNexus, and I am on TESNexus all of the time. No viruses on this machine...

No, it was different. It was a few years back and at the time it was really making the rounds. It came across as some company trying to sell you anti-virus protection but it installed a Trojan that blocked a number of processes, including my ability to use my browser. So I couldn't download any tools to get rid of it. I ended up having to format my whole OS and start from scratch.

I only seem to get that nasty Trojan whenever I use Internet Explorer while looking through Nexus.

The thing is that I didn't click on anything to get this one, it just came up by itself. And even though I clicked on the X box to close, I was redirected anyway. If as you say you picked up a virus by accidentally clicking on an ad, that makes me even more dubious about the site. Is he not scanning/monitoring those things to make sure they're safe?

Same thing happens to me every once and a while. I am using IExplorer, though.

If they were really doing nothing, many more users would be affected. Of course ads these days can rig the X button. You can use taskmgr to close windows if need be, or use the quit shortcut commands. (I love keyboard shortcuts.)

The Thing with these little buggers, they could've gotten on your system months ago and sat dormant, they take their time setting up...

Well obviously I'm not the only one. And since it just happened again today after informing them of the situation quite awhile back, I have to wonder just what they're doing about it.
