Longships and Boats

Post » Mon Jan 31, 2011 3:19 pm

Boats are one of the things that Bethesda needs to consider more. Not only are they essential to the Viking culture which Nords are based of off, but rivers and oceans were the highways of the historical period, and a staple theme in legends and adventure stories from every culture, including classics like The Odyssey and Sinbad the Sailor.

It would be pretty cool to use boats and upgrade them

Give us a viking style longship called "Ormen Lange", the famed boat of a norwegian viking king.

I'd rather like to sink that one.

Votes yes, but isn't the coast awfully short and without any distant islands to travel to? Even Realms of Arkania, back in 1992, had boat travels and harbor masters with ships coming and going, but that game wasn't about backyard exploring and had quite a few boat rides you could hike along with during your travels. Small row boats to cross dangerous rivers would be a nice setting.

'Nice? It's the only thing,' said the Water Rat solemnly, as he leant forward for his stroke. 'Believe me, my young friend, there is nothing-absolutely nothing-half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats. Simply messing,' he went on dreamily:'messing-about-in-boats; messing-' :frog:

Call your character Guybrush Threepwood, get yourself a ten minute water breathing spell. Problem solved ;)

I am currently one of 3 who voted no :)

And honest to God, what in hell would i do with a boat in skyrim? the obvious answer would be to sail down a river who most likely would get me killed in a waterfall :)

I get that people want realism, but at least make it like Oblivion where you have two ships at dock for realism. I dont see any reason to use devloping time on adding boats unless it's pure eyecandy.

It feels good be one of the sad little idiots who just wouldnt use a boat in Skyrim.

[insert flame and unfair and irrational statement here] for real though, its good to add them because even if you don't intend to use them, many people would and the interests of the 97% who say yes is more important to the 3% that arent affected by them being implemented...just my way of seeing it.

Not a big fan of actually sailing ships in games, but if used as a form of travel between locations or the site of battles then I'm all for it. :tops:

Yes. The water in Skyrim would be freaking COLD to be swimming in.

Of course boats are interesting! Especially if it allows us to go on the Island of Roscrea!

Probably it won't occur in the main game, but hopefully we will get an add-on allowing us to explore the Sea of Ghosts and the Island...

Moreover, I'm sure that if a dragon attacks a wooden boat, this would lead to a very frightening battle...

I'm fairly certain we'll get boats in Skyrim. Then again, we got them in Oblivion too, but that didn't mean anything.

not only should we get boats, but NPC's boats should actually move.

It would of been cool seeing one of the boats from the imperial harbor sailing down a river. It would be like traveling merchants, which would open the door for a pirate faction, or at least the ability to be a lone pirate.
