Longships and Boats

Post » Mon Jan 31, 2011 1:28 pm

As We all know Vikings where also and mostly a Sea related culture, not so in many fantasy novels and stories tough , In Skyrim if I remember well Lore wise there is also a relation still to the sea and colonization of the world , plus the Architecture of some homes definetly are inspired by boat shapes....

Now will there be Drakkars , Knars etc or some similar boats and most importantly be able to sail with them ? Or even small rowboats to go around in rivers?

Off Topic! I havent been on the forums for a long time, but wasn't it you who made the Conan/cimmerian mods for Oblivion? We used to talk some when you were working on the Dune mod, I loved your mods and I played hundreds of hours with the Cimmerian mod. When I saw the first screens on Skyrim your mods were the first thing that came to my mind, thinking that they must have helped to inspire to some degree to this new game. It's all very Frank Frazetta and REH. And yea, I hope we get boats, both Norse ships with raiding quests and some big imperial boats, maybe the new game engine even allows for some piracy and seabattling?

Hahah yes it's me Glad you liked them I just now reinstalled all my Cimmerian mod and the bulky character to finally finish Shivering islands lol , never complted that quest since I started modding it ... only now I can see the difference between the old graphics and the new graphics that look awsome , if it will be moddable I will really seriously think of making something for Skyrim too :) ....

Mehehehe.
If we've got to hold for true what we've seen in the concept art, there may very well be boats and ships. However, I doubt they'll be of other than aesthetic worth.

Maybe there could be some "transport" ship doing a a route outside in the ocean and up the rivers and you could use it kind of like stepping on the trains in red dead redemption. Could prob be modded in though, and yes prometheus, Skyrim will be moddable, I read about the creation kit in some article.

I'd definitely like ships entering and leaving ports now and then - if we can have guard patrols and merchant caravans out on the roads, why not have ships? I could imagine all sorts of interesting developments here: such as trade vessels coming in from Morrowind, delivering new shipments of items for the shopkeepers.

Arena actually had rowboats which let you navigate the water at a quicker pace. Those could be nice, especially if the waters are swarming with enemies again.

Boats... makes me think of something. Ah, yes... travel services like in Morrowind :whistling:

YEAH!

I hope they dont overdo the Viking thing. I don't just want dragon ships in Skyrim, I also want to see regular imperial ships. All for immersion and realism.

If I had to guess who I would say the guy who disagreed in the thread was the guy who voted no. Or any of the trolls that lurk and think it is funny just because everyone agreed. I like this idea, it would add a lot of realism.

Haha, I saw now that you predicted it was me. :celebration:

In my defense, I didnt read the poll properly. I somehow understood the question was "do you want (only) viking inspired ships in Skyrim", not ships in general. :celebration: (Nice spin, huh?)

Vikings back in the day used a shallow bottomed boat like a birrlin or however u spell it. When moving across small landmasses they would lift it and carry it across. That would make for a cool escort mission...protect civil war side A while they transport their birlinns across the isle.
