Longswords or quarterstaves?

Which weapon would you use between a longsword and a quarterstaff?

I'm a staff person. Long swords wouldbe too heavy for me to use with one arm and too impractical to use with two. At least a quarterstaff would be a little easier to handle. It's also not sharp; sharp things are terrifying to hold.

I'm a sword person but in a duel between a Long Sword and a quarter staff its going to come down to the users skill with those weapon. Sure a Long Sword can cut and stab a person but a quarter staff can be a fast weapon and a long sword could get stuck in the wood of the staff causing the sword user to become disarmed.

Quarterstaff.

Definitely.

I wish they were in more games :(

Ever since my days in Tae Kwon Do I've preferred the Staff. It's a very elegant weapon when wielded by an expert.

I'd favor the staff, since that's the kind of weapon that will come to hand anywhere (broomsticks, pool cues, curtain rods...).

I've always been a sword person, but I'd favor the lighter, more agile swords for quick thrusts so in this case, I'd go with the staff. Although I'm not sure how effective that would be against an armored foe. What would you do? Trip them?

I voted long sword, but my preferred weapon is the Colt M1911. I think I'll beat anyone with a quarter staff or longsword.

In most cases, indeed. The only time they'd beat you is with sheer numbers or by the element of surprise, but even then, the same results could have been achieved with a rival M1911.

Since it's a blunt weapon, it can break bones, obliterate jaws...

Basically, succeeding where swords won't cut it, because of full plate armor.

Yeah, and if they are, I'd like better mechanics for them!

Also, you can easily add rings to quarterstaves in order to better parry swords and blunt caps for harder strikes.

Since I collect swords, I guess them. Though were I to actually attempt to use one, I'd probably just drop it on my foot.

Wait, what? How would rings better parry a sword? I just don't understand the science of it, that's all. I'm not a physics person. What if your rings got stuck on your enemy's sword?

I didn't really mean pretty rings, if that's what you were getting at. http://img3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20130601140516/inuyasha/images/c/cb/Miroku_and_his_Shakujo.jpgI'm just not sure as to how it would help you parry better, that's all. Not that I'm going to go out and bludgeon some gang bangin sword users tonight or anything, heh.

Longsword obviously.

They don't make "Silver Quarterstaffs" so they would be impractical against the undead.

Well you could hit him with a Quarter Staff and hope that the vibrations from the resounding gong would cause the spirit to dissipate.

Then step back while I poke the undead between the folds of the plate armour and then he dies and we both get XP.

Well silver doesn't make for a particularly strong weapon in any form...

Among other things.

It is the reach and speed of the Quarterstaff that can win the fight. Swords became a weapon of choice because the nature of most battles that used swords. People were too jammed up to effectively swing a quarterstaff. The reason they are jammed up is the increased protection of having someone right next to you and interlaced shields for arrows. Plus the intimidation factor of a large cohesive group moving as one is much more than a diffused group of people.

A spear and shield wielding group of hoplites (phalanx) is an almost unstoppable force.

Spears are just staves with a blade on one of it's edges.
