Looking to Cut Down on CTD's

Post » Thu Nov 11, 2010 12:45 am

I am using a lot of MOds ... I know and I know to expect CTD's. I am just trying to cut down on them. (this doesn't even show all of the texture mods used.)

I am looking to play a thief it says anything about all of my mods related to know that, but if it was you, what you cut out?

Other question is that Oblivion crashes everything I exit and I narrowed it down to the ULx files, but the problem is no matter which ones I enable/disable, it still seems to do it.

Oblivion's CTD on exit is an engine bug, but it can be permanently destroyed by this mod (OBSE plugin):

http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=22410

Now, a few tips on your LO:

Beautiful People is at this point an abandoned mod, as it has gone for many years without updates to fix some rather glaring issues that make it incompatible with just about every race mod out there, so I'd suggest axing it.

You have Better Cities Resources in your LO, but where's the rest of the mod? Better Cities Resources does absolutely nothing on it's own, so either install the BC plugins or get rid of it.

Get http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=20516 and use it to sort your load order.

Get http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=22368 and make a Bashed Patch to minimize mod conflicts.

lots of texture mods, whats your system specs..i ask this because i use a lot of texture mods, and with my beast computer it still crashes quite frequently.

are you getting ctds from simple things like interior/exterior switch, when the game stutters, when the game tries to load new cells as you travel? because thats where i get the majority of ctds, and i really don't know how to fix them, oh and this reminds me, if you're not using these, get them: obse, oblivion stutter remover, crash prevention system, streamline. these are all obse plugins, so no esps, and they do prevent a lot of ctds.

You do yourself no favors at all leaving this one in place. It's got bugs and is a huge source of save game bloating. Since you're already using All Natural, you should switch to the version that comes with it. You can't reverse the bloat you've already inflicted on your saves, but at least you won't get any NEW bloat.

Also, no Bashed Patch. All Natural's interior weather system will be next to worthless unless you go back and reinstall it properly.

Thomas Kaira suggested that you axe Beautiful People, so I thought I would mention that others are out there that are being maintained. Race Balancing Project is what I personally use, and it provides support for most body mods as well as a number of lore-friendly playable races, such as Ohmes, Ohmes-Raht, Golden Saints and Dark Seducers.

Thank you so much for your replies, but I do have to laugh slightly, as Beautiful People and Real Lights were two of the last mods installed after playing for a bit and there were CTD"s before them. I will look at everyone's suggestions though, not crashing will make the game more enjoyable.

I will look into bash Patching a few conflicts, though Wyre Bash does intimidate me. Everything is BOSSed, so the LO should be decent.

Thanks for the fast exit mod, that will save me one or two headaches.

One of the Imperial City Mods I am using needed the Better Cities Resources.

The reason I am stacking the lights is because It looks like they are supposed to work together. Playing a thief, I want to make sure I can extinguish lights.

I am not worried about the bloat. Once the game feels tested, I will start a new game.

Another quick question:

Has the shading always been this choppy?

The shadowing on the face looks choppier than I remember.

Sounds like you are pushing your video card too much.
Check your VRAM usage ingame by writing from the console:
TDT
SDT 13
If your VRAM usage in 75% or more than the VRAM of your card it suggests you need to reduce it.

If crashing on exit it suggests you need to clean your mods with TES4EDIT.

IDK But I can tell from that picture that that character has no eyes. I'm pretty sure that problem comes from Beautiful people too.

Well you're going to care about it one day if you don't fix the problem rather than leaving it in place when you start new. Bloat on the level the old RL creates can overwhelm the size of your saved game to the point where it will simply stop working.

NPCs takes a lot of CPU power, so mods adding NPCs would be the first ones to consider, i.e. moDem's City Life, Crowded Roads Revisited (I guess - not using them) etc. Anyway, a couple of notes:

Cobl Races TNR.esp - You need to use Wrye Bash and a Bashed Patch for this. Import NPC Faces into the Bashed Patch and keep them unchecked. Otherwise they will overwrite OOO's NPC stats.
Cobl Races TNR SI.esp - As above, but as OOO doesn't touch SI not strictly necessary.

All Natural.esp - As you're using AN I'd recommend Immersive Interiors, which requires it. It's awesome to be able to see through windows from the inside.

Living Economy.esp - Consider switching to Enhanced Economy. LE has some issues.
Living Economy - Items.esp

ElaborateEyes.esp - I don't think you should use EE with Cobl Races.

I have already been told you can not use Extinguish the Lights with Weather AN Real Lights (Extinguish requires BC resources for those of you not in the know).
You will get some lights that can't be snuffed, some (like some candles in stores/homes) that will have the giant missing mesh graphic, and some you can snuff out.
You either live with that, or don't have Real Lights at all, or don't have Extinguish the Lights.

speaking of which, I just did this and have a 512 card. It shows 700-800 memory use using AEVWD with UL. Is that too much?

1.) Since I am already Using Crowded Roads Revisited, should i just get rid of immersive travelers? A little redundant?

2.) I really did like the sound of Immersive Interiors, but I was worried this would be a real resource killer, is it not?

3.) I really did like the look of the eyes from EE ... added that shine!

I apologize, but I am lost here, but what is BS?

If I am doing this the wrong way, is there a better Light Extinguishing mod or way of doing things? One that works, but is not a huge resource hog?

No there is not. Either you use an old and very badly made mod called real lights that can cause save game bloat and other issues and be able to extinguish them or you us the AN real lights and have missing meshes and so on. There is no resolution until an extenguish the lights mod is made for AN Real lights.

Or you could forego any real lights mod and just use the thieves arsenal arrows.

When we say Save Game bloat, how much are we talking about?

I really wanted to play a thief in this game and for me, that need is submersive. I will have to do some thinking on this, thank you.

Most people report no performance loss when using Immersive Interiors. The optional lights addon might perhaps reduce your FPS by 2 or 3, but chances are you'll see no reduction, and the lights addon can always be disabled.
